Telemann: Fantasia No. 7 in F Major TWV 40:8, Hanneke van Proosdij, recorder 4K

Telemann’s Fantasia No. 7 TWV 40:8, performed by Hanneke van Proosdij, alto recorder.
The fantasies for unaccompanied flute, violin, and viola da gamba demonstrate Telemann’s mastery of melodic lines and idiomatic writing.
Telemann wrote two sets of twelve with the same title. The title piece in the original print in 1727/8 says "Fantasie per il Violino senza basso," however, in his autobiography, Telemann refers to 12 fantasias for transverse flute.
The other set of 12, which indeed are for idiomatic for violin, have a myriad of double stops, so we can assume the title for the first set may have been a printer's error. Though these fantasias are written for the transverse flute, they are great fun to play on the alto recorder. The original key is D major; I’m playing it in F major on the alto.
The first movement of the 7th fantasia has the character "alla Francese," which can be interpreted as being in French overture style. It was common in French overtures to overdot the rhythms, as you will see in the performance.

Telemann has been my favorite composer since I was 15. It was the flute/recorder fantasias that got me hooked. I have always wanted to orchestrate this particular fantasia for strings and BC.

I love the way this sounds like a grand orchestral french overture, but so cleverly deduced to single melodic line but still retaining its gravitas, Telemann was such a fine composer, a complete master at everything he did!

Telemann's a life saver in case of sadness or love depression. I have an old copy of the 12 Telemann fantasias. Sometimes, I put the pack on my note stand, and play them on my recorder until moisture begin to escape from the thumb hole... Finally, I'm almost able to play even the 12th one, the nastiest...

Great playing. Many people don't know that the recorder was the premier flute in the renaissance and baroque eras. But it was later overshadowed by the transverse flute and all but disappeared. And music education using cheap plastic recorders in junior school just perpetuated the idea that it is just a toy and not a serious instrument...so sad. But am glad that this performance restored some of that recorder lustre.
