I didn't know there was a television version of the classic word game Scrabble. I was born in the UK in July 1984.

I have never seen this version of scrabble, but I like it. Both teams get the same rack and have to find the best score. That actually sounds like a fun variant to play.

Still won't beat the Chuck Woolery version.

This is the REAL Scrabble game. In the US, "TV Scrabble" was a game where contestants solved suggestive crossword puzzle-style clues written by the writing staff, with positions placed on a replica Scrabble board. There were no values given to individual letters; scoring was done by the whole word only. It was nothing like the more faithful rendition this UK version did, but was popular for a number of years on the NBC television network because it was dumbed down for the viewers, and had massive cash prizes by comparison. Amazingly, Selchow & Righter, who created the original Scrabble board game, never objected to the American version, but would have loved the UK adaptation!

I find it fascinating that both the UK and the US had Scrabble on the same period yet both are completely different game wise (except the set colors). While this version is a more traditional version of the board game, the US version was a then modern update to Crosswits which was cancelled about a few years before the revamped Scrabble premiered. The only thing that stayed the same were the blue and pink spaces which became money if an clue was correctly answered correctly instead of doubling or tripling points. Worth watching if you are a Crosswits fan.

And this is why the American TV game show adaptation of the board game Scrabble had a much different format.

Thankfully, there would be a much better TV Scrabble debuting in America a few months later.

Which, remarkably, was nothing like Scrabble in actual gameplay.

@@briansaiditsoitmustbetrue4206And don’t get me started on Countdown. We never got that show in America. There was an unsold pilot which got rid of the math rounds.
