If you're familiar with the decluttering trend, minimalism, swedish death cleaning, and the konmari method, you already know identity clutter. Identity Clutter is a concept related to things and objects we possess that are tied to our identity.
We give meaning to identity-related things because they represent our interests, values, needs, dreams, vision, our personality. They represent who we are and what we stand for.
But have you ever wondered where identity clutter comes from? Identity clutter has not always been identity clutter. In fact, it entered our house as cherished possessions, objects and things tied to our identity in the best way possible. At some point, these things made us feel good and confident, comfortable and motivated. I call these types of possessions trophies.
It's most likely that the identity clutter that weights you down today, that makes you feel guilt or shame or disappointment or doubt or regret, was once a trophy. Trophies are cherished and displayed because we like what they tell about us and our personality. Because we like how they make us feel. However, as we change, as we evolve and mature, our interests, values, needs, and visions can change, too. If we don't update the things and stuff in our surroundings as we update our own identity over time, some of these things can turn into identity clutter, into stuff that we begin to associate negative rather than positive emotions with. Stuff that reminds us of past, outdated versions of ourselves, of what we used to want and desire, of what used to be a priority.
In this video I share with you how to tell identity clutter from trophies and how to identify identity-related objects.
