Telstar started a whole new industry with satellite communication. Later on Early Bird satellites and then the Syncom Satellites launched into geosynchronous orbit (Syncom 3 was the first communication satellite to bring live coverage of the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo) and joined the fleet of communication satellites that made communication by telephone, television,telegraph, and high speed data service to anywhere and to anyone on the planet. Later on the ATS (Advanced Telecommunications Satellite) made it possible for television, weather forecasting, and communication to occur from a satellite from geosynchronous orbit.

'Telstar' by The Tornados ... released in 1962 ... co-incidentally, ex UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's favourite tune (!!)

4:39 Wait a minute ! "Putting satellites in exact orbit?" I thought Telstar was the first satellite?
@TastyBusiness3 ай бұрын
Many satellites predated it, Telstar 1 was just the first active communications satellite. Before Telstar were Explorer 1, Echo, Discoverer, Tiros, Pioneer... I could keep going.

@@TastyBusiness I see. Thanks. I was around back then, I just didn't remember the prior satellites.

TIL the Delta’s been around longer than I thought - for some reason I always assumed it began flying in the early 70s.

It’s amazing to think all phone, internet, and tv signals have been transferred around the world for over 60 years by a single satellite in space. I imagine someday we’ll replace Telstar with a better version and bring the old one down and melt it down into commemorative coins. I’ll be the first to buy one. In fact I have a place for it above my fireplace
