The only two times that I was complimented on my watch, it was for a $9 Casio. So don't buy a watch because it looks expensive - nobody else cares. Buy it because you like it.

I bought the quartz PRX as I didn't like the waffle dial on the automatic (the price difference is a bonus!) and agree, it's a great watch. I had the Bulova Lunar Pilot too. I agree that's a very good watch, but it's very long lug to lug and was the only watch I've ever owned that I felt just looked too big for me! The G-Shock, though, only looks like a $1,000 watch because some people are mad enough to pay that for a limited edition one! G-Shocks leave me utterly cold - I've only owned one and that for just a couple of days.

Buying a cream Bambino with Romans was one of the best decisions ive ever made. It is just beautiful and one of my most worn watches. Other more expensive watches just sit in the drawer now, on a good leather strap this thing is so elegant.

You know what I'd be VERY interested in seeing? Your look at the best bracelet on an affordable watch. There are countless articles about the best integrated bracelet, but not about just the best bracelet (integrated or not). I keep being disappointed by the quality of bracelets in many affordable watches (Seiko, citizen, pagani, casio), and I'd love to know WHO MAKES THE BEST FOR THE MONEY? Thanks for sharing your wisdom :)
@davidabarak Жыл бұрын
I have a Seiko Tank and absolutely love it. My own preference is for watches with light-colored dials. To me, dark dials say "I'm trying to look classy," but light dials say "I'm not trying to look classy, and that makes me classy." As for the Casio, well... I _hate_ digital watches, but I _do_ have an analog Casio. I personally don't think it's a watch that can be thought of at all as being classy, but it's certainly fine for the gym or other places where you won't be looking your best. That's the only time I wear it, and that's why I have a collection of beautiful (and sometimes artsy-fartsy, but still classy) watches, all bought for under $200. These are just my opinions.
@edword3457 Жыл бұрын
Well said, I would like to hear which watches in your collection you would recommend to others.
@davidabarak Жыл бұрын
@@edword3457 My favorite watches under $200 (most are under $100) are... Square Gold Black Leather Men's Watch SWR052 (The Square Gold Black Leather Men's Watch SWR052 is very similar, just a little wider, but I like the narrower one, like I have, a bit better. Very classy watch.) Invicta Men's Pro Diver Collection Coin-Edge Automatic Watch (It's got a very solid feel.) Porsamo Bleu Luxury Dylan Men's Multifunction Watch with Stainless Steel case and Genuine Leather Band; White and Black 871ADYL (Be aware - it looks like a chronograph, but it's not; I was fooled, but not by false advertising, just my fault. Instead, it has a day of the week dial and two 24-hour dials. It's such a nice watch anyway that it's the one I wear most often. This is tied for first with the Invicta diver's watch for being my favorite sporty watch.) Timex Men's Expedition Scout Chronograph Watch (I absolutely HATED the strap. I tried to find a metal bracelet, which figured was sort of a titanium color, and I couldn't find one. Instead, I attached a black silicone strap, and it looks pretty nice.) Project Watches Crossover Black Mesh (It's a funky watch, a little hard to tell time with, but that's the whole point. It just takes a little getting used to. It has such a spartan, abstract design that I felt it was better to have the metal mesh strap rather than the leather strap. I bought this strictly for fun, to wear to art galleries and similar places. The strap is a bit hard to close, but it might just be because I'm clumsy.) Casio Men's Classic Chronograph Analog Black Resin Watch Black Dial (I currently only wear this when I work out; I figure my sweat won't cause problems because of its water resistance. I may start wearing it when I start sailing again.) I have quite a few other watches, some I don't really like now that I have them (one positive part of buying cheap watches.) One of my watches is a plain Timex that had an olive green "tactical" (woowoo) strap, and I switched that out for a gray Velcro band.) I have three watches I bought for $20 each. They look halfway decent and they'll probably die in the next year or so. Don't buy August Steiner. DON'T BUY AUGUST STEINER. I bought one of their chronographs that looks pretty nice, but after a week or two one of the stopwatch buttons fell out. They're "press-fit" attached, meaning they're just tightly (or not so tightly) squeezed on. Just for fun I once bought a $3 "chronograph" on eBay (it wasn't actually advertised as a chronograph). It tuns out the stopwatch buttons were just molded on. The last time I looked at it, it was still running, but I think I finally threw it away. I bought it knowing it would only be good for a laugh. I only buy analog watches - I really don't like digital. They're just not my thing. I also, so far at least, have only bought quartz watches. Cheaper quartz watches, say less than $300, may not have the second hand line up perfectly with the little tick marks, but for me it's not a huge deal. I don't need expensive watches. Maybe someday if I'm wealthy I'll buy a more expensive watch. I bought some inexpensive tools to help me adjust the length of watch bracelets by adding or removing links, and I have some specialized wrenches that will let me change batteries myself. If you start buying

For me, the Tissot Gentleman quartz would fit nicely into this list. Only a pinch more than the PRX, not quite as common and looks far more expensive than the price tag.

Good list. Really good list. The 'no homage' rule restricts several of the watches that would be on my list which would include the Cadisen Datejust, the Cadisen Daydate, the San Martin (or any of several other) Explorer I homages and the Aqua Terra-esque Casio EFV-100D, esp the white dial variant. Within your rule set, I like the quartz Hamilton Jazzmaster without the Arabic indices and I really like the less dressy Tissot Handwind with the small seconds. I think the grey dial Seiko Dress KX SRPE51K1 though the value leader in my opinion, in this segment, within your rules is the Bambino small seconds. I haven't seen the Citizen with my own eyes. I love the value... not sure how much I love the date complication though I recognize the heritage. Same thing with the Orient Star. Not sure what I think about that power reserve complication. There are no losers here. All are great choices.

Great list, of course. I have to add the seiko solar speedtimer to the list. Can easily be had for (sometimes well) under $500 and they look great! The blue ssc815 is probably one of my favorite watches. Of course, the Orient Kamasu has to be on the list. Finally, if you’re willing to mod (or pay to get it modded), you can get a “dressKX,” upgrade the hell out of it(sapphire crystal, upgraded bracelet, even a new movement with a matching date wheel), and still stay well under $500. One final recommendation would be the Q Timex GMT. Classic, vintage looks for around $200/250.

I have just one suggestion to add and it's a watch you've previously reviewed, even! It's the Casio Oceanus OCW-T200. I've got one and many, many people (people in the watch industry, even) have asked me about it and can't believe it's a Casio. It definitely looks and wears way more expensive than it actually is, and even though it's a bit hard to get, it's under $500 any day, anywhere. Great video though with great finds, some of them I wasn't even aware of! Currently searching for a Citizen C7 on my local e-commerce.

Hello Jodie. Just an idea which perhaps has already been thought of. I like the idea of a power reserve indicator but what about showing it through the glass back of the watch instead - so it could be looked at when you take it off at night to see if it needs winding? Great videos as usual doc.

I prefer the Seiko SUP880 to the SRW052. Still very affordable but with a solar movement and a vertical pattern on the dial (which I think is related to the photovoltaic panel but seems to add to the dressiness of the overall piece). Love it - only drawback is the 23mm lug-width.
