What is the root cause of someone who waits to be called upon to action, rather than being assertive and adding value? Sometimes I find myself waiting to be recognized and called upon which gives motivation, but how do I transition to just being as valuable as much as possible?

I think you should always try to give value and motivated rather than wait to be called up. Value beget value. Add value to people everyday and value will be added to you.
