the Daily Connoisseur these were all right on! We already homeschooled, but I still enjoyed the video. One of our favorite ways to change things up and add beauty to our homeschool days is with a family poetry tea time... I recently did a video on this (with a how to on easy cinnamon rolls!) and it is on my channel if anyone needs more inspiration!

Agreed on what we say in front of our children. We want to cultivate a love of learning. Setting the tone is so important. Someone once told me to think of yourself not as “the teacher” but as the “lead learner.” And it is really true. The pressure lifted off my shoulders when I heard that. I feel I am redeeming my education as I continue on this homeschooling journey. Also, remember that you don’t have to be an expert in the field of education. What we learn in school is a broad range of knowledge not specialized knowledge. If you can read, you can teach yourself and your littles. Be encouraged everyone!

As a 20 year homeschool mama who CHOSE this lifestyle I hope that stay at home moms out there will give it a proper GO and maybe want to continue on after the current insanity has passed. Me too. Esp number 1. I am not homeschooling because I "want to", it is because I have to due to laws in CA. I do like homeschool, but I always carry a bitterness that it wasn't our choice. Something for me to work on.

@@jmcast3195 Consider it a blessing in disguise, now revealed. Much of life is not really our choice, anyway. That's mostly an illusion. I don't know where you are on the faith spectrum, but it sometimes helps me to use this analogy. My children often do not want to do anything that is ultimately good for them, so I have to force their hand. But in the end, they realize that they are happier when they eat a nice meal, take a bath, or go to bed on time, even if they didn't want to. It wasn't "their choice." I think of many things in life that way, that maybe there is a divine force directing my life, making me do things that aren't my choice, but which might be really good for me (or for those who are in my care).

I've homeschooled for a number of years now. My oldest did public school from K-2nd grade. I learned that teachers & schools aren't perfect, so I didn't put so much pressure on myself to be perfect either. I love the ability to set your own priorities when you are homeschooling. My advice for those just starting would be to focus on routines and behaviors first, and academics second.

Former public school teacher here, now homeschooling like everyone else. Just wanted to say great job, these are all good tips, especially modeling a positive attitude (you get what you project) and presenting yourself in a way that expects and shows respect. My bonus tip: have a daily routine (flexible, of course) that almost always happens in the same order. Kids feel secure when they know what's coming next. At our house, times vary, but we decided on writing, math, science, snack/read aloud, reading, specials, lunch. Harder things are at the beginning, fun in the middle, and I give them some "edutainment" time on the laptop/tablet at the end of each school "day"-- a break for me and a carrot for them to look forward to when school is over.

Another amazing series similar in historical fiction genre are the “Love Comes Softly” series by Janette Oak. Highly, highly recommend reading these, especially to children, because they get to get a glimpse of what life was like during the pioneer days and how their faith prevailed. I’m currently re-reading the series during this Lenten season/virus time. Thanks for being SUCH a good example of a great mom and a happy family! You’re a breath of fresh air, Jennifer, truly! Agree! It is my absolute favorite children's series. I read it to my boys (at first it was a hard sell because it is about a girl and her sisters, but it didn't take long for them to appreciate all that the stories have to offer). I find that aside from the historical information it teaches, it also imparts values regarding how to treat parents, how to treat others, and how good parents treat their children. It includes so much adventure, and the pioneering experience, how to persevere through continual failure (I'm thinking of Pa and the frequently doomed crops), and I especially love the detailed explanations she goes into about preparing food for the winter, or building a house, or how the crops are brought in. I cannot think of any other children's series that does all that.

And as soon as I realized it was happening to my kids. I couldn’t let them go through that. Thank God we are able to homeschool. And I am so sorry for the other parents and children going through it because they have no choice.

These were great! I would also add to not assume your older children can just "manage" all of the new changes. Our 15 year old, who is a freshman in high school, was managing a sport, choir, and band along with his school work fine before all of this... he almost went through a period of "depression" when this occurred! My kids are very blessed to go to a strong Christian school, so we realized, he suddenly wasn't being "nurtured" the same and his first couple of weeks were just rough! In Indiana we are on "stay at home" orders, so we have taken great advantage of technology and had him join all the zoom calls his school has put together...both academically and socially...we are encouraging him to keep up with his music practice...and definitely to get exercise! And we've given him some freedom with his phone to facetime or play an appropriate game online with friends without little brothers underfoot.... All that to say, make sure your teen is getting emotional support-- I am thankful I don't necessarily have to manage him like an elementary student right now (which I have 2 of!), but they definitely need us to come alongside! This was a great video! thank you! and Happy Easter! Leanne

Hi Jennifer, I’ve considered homeschooling when my kids were younger, but didn’t know much about it. Virtual learning was a bit challenging the first week for me and I felt really out of control. That’s because I have 4 children (11,8,7 and 2). So Three of them are in school and two of them are sharing a computer. I also work at night 6-12. So it was tiring and then I would work. My question is how do you teach your older kids while taking care of the younger ones? I 2 older ones are girls and two younger ones are boys like yours and boys can be very distracted. Lol. I don’t mind teaching my children at all, however, I don’t have much patience. I do a lot in a day( school drop off, pickup, laundry, cooking, cleaning and then go to work at night). So now that I don’t have to go out I’m more patient. My husband and I are the only ones who look after our children so we have not had alone time to go anywhere in many years. Thanks for sharing your tips, but please let me know how you keep the little ones busy while teaching the older ones. Sorry for the long message, it helps to understand my little patience. Now I get more time to read with my girls and I love it!

Hello! The baby takes a 3 hour nap in the morning and that is when we school. I do preschool with my son first while the girls are getting ready because he is generally up earlier. Then we do a morning time all together with subjects like art, geography, and Bible, etc. Then I break off and work with only the girls and my son understands and he plays with something or colors or looks at books or even watches a program. Hope that helps.
@oneofmany70514 жыл бұрын
Hi! I can very much relate to your situation! My husband and I are also the only ones who look after our children as we live far away from family and have never been very social as a couple. We decided to homeschool three years ago because I felt like I didn't have any other options. Frankly, I knew homeschooling was the right thing for our family, but I needed a major attitude adjustment about it, mostly because I had a hard time keeping my cool with my children (now 10, 8, 7) with my husband frequently traveling for weeks at a time. Anyway, after the first year of homeschooling, I realized that we needed to spend more time at home instead of trying to keep up with everyone else with co-ops and extra-curriculars. THAT was a game-changer for my attitude! Going out is just stressful. The more we stayed at home during the week, the more content we were staying home. Now, all this social distancing stuff is unnoticeable to our family and we are thriving. We are less stressed, therefore, we are all more patient with each other. :) I am sure another stressful thing is trying to teach all three at the same time. I know it was stressful for me! Since you only have 2 computers, I suggest the odd child out babysit/entertain/read to the 2 year old while you are available to help the two children on the computer or do housework. This also provides precious one-on-one sibling time. One thing I have also found really useful is to enlist my children in helping around the house. Your older children can easily be taught cooking, cleaning, and laundry. I highly recommend Dave Ramsey's website for ideas on how to involve children in doing household chores and being responsible with money. I have started using his materials with my children and they are working really well. I will add that I come from a large family of large families, if that makes sense. :) I, myself, am the oldest of 7; my mother is one of 17 children. My mother's family is made up of many large families and the way it works is that the older children help with the younger children and with household and outdoor chores. Basically, one must earn their keep. It is insanity to try to do everything and be everything for our children, (and everyone else, too, for that matter) even though society has done a good job of convincing us that we should. That super lofty mentality has left many stressed-out, frazzled people in its wake. Our children are very capable human beings. Learning how to care for children and manage a household are all part of an education most children miss out on these days. And it sure takes a load off of Mom, too! Enlist the help God gave you - your children! :D Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your reply. Your tips make a lot of sense. I do get help from my middle daughter when I’m working with my older son. He has ADHD so it can be very challenging. I agree kids should help and apply that sometimes. The thing is I’m usually on a time constraint and I get things done faster. I have gotten so much better at asking my children for help and it feels so good. I used to be a perfectionist with everything and worked tirelessly to keep everything in order and then if I couldn’t I’d feel so defeated. Thankfully I’ve changed things up a bit and it has gotten easier. Glad that the homeschooling has worked out for you. I prefer to send my children to school because it’s too much for me and I prefer for them to get exposure to other people and children. I used to want to shelter them, but realized that we can all learn from others. I still teach them at home and reading is the best way to connect with them. Jennifer’s video about ready to her kids inspired me so much. My 11 year old and I just read out “The Wind in the Willows” and I LOVE that book! The language is beautiful! My other daughter and I are reading “A Little Princess”. I grew up in a former British colony so I’m familiar with a lot of British shows and books. I also read a lot of religious books to them. Max Lucado is a good author for that. Anyway, thank you both for your ideas.

One of the biggest misconceptions of homeschooling is that homeschooled kids are not exposed to other children and people. Not only do they have good social lives, that’s what homeschool groups are for plus many other activities they get involved in they also learn the important skill of socializing with many different ages instead of just their own age. One of the best benefits of homeschooling is that you get to choose your friends when kids are in school you don’t always know what kind of families kids come from and what they’re being exposed to.

Do you have any recommendations on videos to learn about Charolette Mason style homeschooling? The older boys and myself have ADHD and right now we are in a very rigorous curriculum from Seton. I love the curriculum, that it’s accredited, and how our faith is so permeated in it but it is a struggle to get through all the subjects daily and I feel like we are constantly behind in the lesson plan schedule. I know we’re supposed to go at their pace, that’s one reason we chose to homeschool, but I’m scared we won’t be able to finish the subjects before the end of the school year. Praying everyone is staying safe during these unprecedented times.

I think these are great tips for parents who want to homeschool. But for the kind of learning at home that is happening now for all children- homeschooled, public and private schooled children- I think this time of learning would be better termed “crisis schooling,” as Angela Braniff of This Gathered Nest put it. Because this time of quarantine is not normal for anyone- including people who already homeschooled. This is a time of great stress for most people and being isolated in one’s home is not normal for most people, regardless of how they choose to educate their children.

great video! I think women need to stop using wine as a punchline all the time. Is it really "wine-o-clock" joke time for moms all the time? Maybe there is something deeper that needs exploring on this?! I cannot imagine if my mom had had a wineglass that had been printed with "mommy's sippy cup" on it. I think it's very sad, and I love to joke around--so I'm not without a sense of humour. Kids definately pick up on a parent's vibes on just about everything. Setting a good example is so important.

However, I have seen some disasters with homeschooled children whose parents have ulterior motive’s to keep their neglected children out of sight and avoid the monitoring that comes with mainstream schooling. I’m confused that you chose home schooling initially because you couldn’t get your children registered for the local school on time. What kind of education system does California have? In Canada schooling is a right. It wouldn’t matter when you registered your children for school even if you waited till the first day of school or a month later. Enrolling your children in the local public school is an absolute and inalienable right.

Luke 7:47-48 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven - for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little." And He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
