I’m a grandmother now and host most holidays for our two grown children and their families. I ALWAYS set a pretty table with my best china and I have several sets. My little grandchildren are growing up drinking out of crystal glasses! Several times I’ve been told by friends how silly I’m being and why do so much extra work for what??? Not too long ago, one holiday, my son and daughter were visiting about memories of growing up. My daughter said,” one of my favorite memories is how mom sets a fancy table!” My son said,” yes, mine too! It just makes the food so yummy!” I agree.....use your best!

I went to a very formal funeral, several years ago. Crystal stemware, silver flatware, bone China and beautiful damask table linens. The post meal hot drinks were served in ceramic carafes, with cups and saucers. The young lady next to me (in her thirties, I was 48 at the time) looked very uncomfortable. I asked if she was ok, did she need any help, and her reply was that she had never used a cup and saucer before and didn't know what to do with it, or the teaspoon. I quietly showed her how to do it, by demonstrating with my own, and smiled broadly at her. My thoughts were 'how terribly sad that this girl had never been in a situation where someone had taken her out to a place where they used teacups.' It broke my heart, but made me realise how incredibly lucky I had been during my life, and what wonderful parents I had, as they saved like mad to take us places.

Great little actresses there :--) my 18yo had 3 of her girlfriends over last night. They cooked dinner together. I thought they'd eat their spaghetti bolognaise while watching a movie, but they sat at the big dining table with the candles lit and chatted happily, then congregated around the fireplace with cups of tea. I was thrilled.

Love this series. My mother saved so many of her things. Sadly she died after a long illness having not enjoyed them. It was so sad. She saved dishes, linens, nightgowns and perfumes. I’m embarrassed to tell my age, but rest assured, it’s never to late to hear good advice. Stay classy....it’s refreshing.

Saving such-and-such "for best" was such a way of life. I remember getting new, pretty things for my birthday, and my grandmother urging me to save them for a special occasion. And when would that ever come? We lived such an ordinary life and didn't even go to church much (so no "Sunday-going-to-meetin' best"...). I was a growing child, and I wonder if Grandma did not realize that by the time a special occasion might come, I would have outgrown that nice something...

One of the alternating jobs my two sisters and I had growing up was setting the table each evening. Mum taught us how to set it and then gave us free reign to pretty it up. Candles and flowers, fruit, doilies. Setting the table week was my favourite. Better than doing the dishes or feeding the pets.

I actually added to my list candle stick holders. You’d be amazed how many beautiful items and are in secondhand and thrift stores and for amazing prices! I absolutely have seen crystal glass sets. Already on my list is a nice tea cup and saucer and nice serving platters to replace my old tired plastic bowls. I used to go to thrift stores once a year. I don’t need to spend a fortune to get beautiful things and I don’t need many things in general but I do note what I really want and slowly acquire once I’m sure. A candlelight dinner once a week with my family sounds just beautiful. Thank you for the inspiration!

I honestly don’t own any of the things you listed. However, my mother did give me my grandmother’s set of china. My Gma passed away before I was born, but the China is very special to me, because my mom would let me use it when I was a child. Sometimes I used it just for a snack. Many times I pulled it out to host a luncheon for my stuffed animals. The China was a very happy part of my childhood. If it had been treated like nothing more than a museum display it wouldn’t have a place in my heart now.

Hi Jennifer I’m new to your channel but have owed “Madame Chic” for a couple of years. I like to reread it for the gentle humour and practical advice. As I’m quite old I’m a handkerchief woman - not for heavy colds but hay fever and tears. My granddaughters prefer using Gran’s Liberty prints over tissues and there’s no issue in the wash, if one is forgotten. I always have them in my pockets or handbags. Pulling out a screwed up tissue just doesn’t compare to a freshly ironed hankie. All the best to you and your family.

I was finally able to get to and open up a box of china that I had never seen in my life, that my mother purchased in the 80's, before I was born. I wondered for years what the china even looked like. I kept trying not to have certain expectations; I love florals and more old fashioned and traditional things. But I know my mother has very simple, even plain taste, so I resigned myself to that idea, but I just could not wait to have some nice teacups to use. It turns out my assumption that the set included teacups was wrong, I was so sad to find no teacups! I'm trying to appreciate the beautiful and positive aspects of it, though as it's a serving set, and it's only my mother and I, and we have no dinner table at this time, it's tough to find a use for these pieces. As for the style, it's lovely smooth china, with a simple silver stripe and edges. I'm trying to shake the feeling of "tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me" 😂 and praying that I can fall in love with it in the end, as well as use it!

I inherited some new handkerchiefs from my father when he passed as my mother kept a stack of brand new ones in his dresser; brings tears to my eyes to think of him again but I love having them in my pocket as the very soft cotton reminds me of his tender heart. I grew up with a mom who believed in using the best stuff everyday. Also, you don't need to touch the wick with the candle snuffer. Using the snuffer to hover over the wick will stop the oxygen from feeding the flame. I've only learned that a few years ago.

I have (and use!) a wonderful assortment of vintage, seasonally appropriate hankies. One summer day, a friend and I were having an impromptu al fresco lunch. I whipped out my hankie, used it as a napkin and placemat, then dipped it in a conveniently nearby fountain, wrung it out and used it to tidy up and wash my hands. My companion said "Wow, that thing is really handy!" I said, "Why do you think they call it a "HAND-kerchief?" ;-) I always have one in my purse and wash them in the machine, using them for all sorts of things (including the purpose for which they were made). They function as emergency bandages, hair ties, bandanas, tear-catchers and sudden sneezes when you haven't got a tissue. Just wash them in very hot, soapy water, rinse in very hot water, then spread them flat on a mirror to dry (yep); they'll be smooth and beautiful in no time! Thanks for your lovely videos....they're very inspiring!

I love handkerchiefs! I keep them in my purse, especially in summer. If it's very hot and I begin to perspire, I can use a handkerchief in lieu of a paper towel or tissue that may leave dust or remnants on my skin or clothing. After I use one, I just drop it into a little pouch (you can use a Ziploc bag) that I keep in my purse. When I get home, I put the soiled cloths in the laundry or soak them in the bathroom sink.

As for the candle snuffers: What can and does happen is, the hot wax may splatter over your nice tablecloth. And that wax is a bother to get out, especially colored wax on white table cloth. Thank you for another lovely video. I love wearing my elegant jewelry when I go out; it makes me look out together. We broke out our Waterford crystal glasses for our Easter and Mother’s Day dinners. What a treat! As a child, I enjoyed hanging out in our formal room. We didn’t use it just for Christmas; our piano was also there, and I practiced the clarinet in the room and imagined I had a concert. It was my happy place when I read and still remember perusing toys in the Sears Christmas catalog in the room and hoping the toys would eventually make their way under our tree. Speaking of candlesticks, Tosca is the free featured opera tonight (offered from 7:30 pm 6/4 to 6:30 pm 6/5 EST) on Met Opera. (One of my personal favorite operas) You can’t miss the end of Act II when Tosca places the candlesticks by the body of the despicable Scarpia.

Great video! We have some handmade lace-trimmed table linens from Russia, along with two Catherine the Great pattern tea sets, also from Russia. I have plans to purchase a couple lower cabinets for the dining room so those items can live there and be readily available for regular use. I found a nice candle snuffer at Target a couple years ago that we use. Another thing I try to use regularly are handmade quilts, whether on beds or as wall hangings (we have high ceilings on our main floor and lots of wall space). I have heard you and Nikki mention handkerchiefs enough that I plan on getting some handkerchief linen to make some. I remember my mom made my sisters and me some cotton handkerchiefs when I was little. When we got dressed up for church, she had us put the folded handkerchief in one of our shoes so we would always have it on hand. I had forgotten about that til just now - thank you for the trip down memory lane! 😊 Oh, as a baker, another thing I wish people would use right away and not save is GOOD FOOD! I cannot tell you how many times I work hard to make something nice and then it doesn't get eaten because "It is so good" they want to save some for later. But what usually ends up happening? It gets put away and forgotten about until it is past its prime, goes bad, or gets freezer burned. And then their review of it is "meh". 😬 As the maker of such items, that offends me. My parents and husband are the worst about it. I understand where the mentality of it comes from, but it would be nice if..... Okay.... I will just stop right there! LOL! Touchy subject for me! Anyway, eat the good food when it is in front of you AND make the "good" recipes more often!😁

We use our candlesticks at versions times the year during family prayer times, and if course if we have a power outage! We also always use the snuffer as blowing out candles can send melted wax flying everywhere. A lot less of a mess with the snuffer. I very much enjoyed your daughters’ cameo! 😂 You make some excellent points here. One of the things I’ve learned through our marriage of frequent moves is to use the nice stuff, as you never know when it might be broken in a move! 😱

Gosh. I have lots of beautiful jewellery, some bought for me by my late mother. What do I wear every day? Plain silver hoops. I need to level up my jewellery choices!! It would please my mum. Thank you, Jennifer, for the reminder xx

You opened my eyes to pretty loaf pans. I didn’t know such things existed. I have handkerchiefs from my grandmother and I use them mainly at funerals because tissues just get so messy.

My luxury is perfume I use it everyday I have three that I rotate because if you always use the same one you don't smell it anymore and use too much. I moved last year to Germany and left my crystal in the UK (my daughter uses it ) but as we live near the Czech Republic I will buy myself another set (when the problems are over). I use the table linen from my great aunt and my husbands grandmother (also her monogrammed bed linen ). I also bought some beautiful lace items for the house when I lived in Belgium and these I must use so I am off into the attic to get them out thanks for the prompt.

Ooo thank you for this! I love using handkerchiefs! I have a few lovely embroidered ones and always keep one in my handbag. I’d like to have some more. Adding to my wish list right now! Thank you for reminding me. 😁. Stay well. Blessings...

Jennifer, I LOVE this list. The only exception for me is the perfume. I know several people, including my mom, who have allergies to them and cannot be around people wearing perfume. It has ruined many social events for them. Other than that, this list has inspired me to bring out my unused items! Thank you!

I am one of those people who wish no one would wear perfume because it keeps us from having a social life. If you do research on perfume you will find out that anything with an artificial scent in it is actually very unhealthy for everyone.

In the past I was guilty of saving good perfume for special occasions - at least a decade ago I stopped that and wear it any day. But I never wear perfume when I'm going to be close around others - I wear perfume only for my own pleasure and am very aware that not everyone finds other people's perfume pleasant. I'm actually one of those people - I like the scent that I wear but I never want to be close enough to smell other ladies perfume!!

Like my parents and grandparents in France, I have most of these beautiful things and using them is just natural to me. Despite a difficult financial crisis where I live now, I still use them regularly just because I love them. About handkerchiefs, I've always used them and have a beautiful collection of them, and no I don't find it gross if you take hygienic measures. No one I know ever got sick because of a handkerchief! There's always a clean one in my handbag, and on special occasions I choose the finest hand-embroidered ones. My daughter does the same, and my little grand-daughter already seems to love the use of special things :)

I am on the lookout for a candle snuffer! Wish I would find one at Goodwill (when I can! 😉) We use candles in our home worship (at family prayer, placing votives in front of icons, etc) but not every day, and I’d like to make it happen more often. A snuffer seems so much more tidy and the kids like using them.

I have a silver beautiful candle snuffer pretty similar to the one you showed in the video & for some reason I always just blow out my candles instinctively! I will be putting the snuffer to good use after watching this video because it’s something i just don’t think about but if it’s there why not use it ?! Lol thanks for the video Xoxox !

I inherited a beautiful handkerchief from my great granny that she embroidered. Her signature scent was Charlie. I remember going to her house and she had little Charlie bottles on their own perfume tray, on their own stand. 😊

I have the same crystal that your parents do :) When we were kids we always had candles every night at dinner and my brother and I got to take turns using the snuffer :) I don't own nice sleepwear, I am always hot at night so less is more but maybe someday.... I also have to get up at sunrise to let my chickens out of their coop so for the sake of ease I need to wear something where I can roll out of bed straight to the outdoors, lol. Fun video, thank you!

I have some pretty handkerchieves that are not expensive but they’re so soft. I use one to gently remove my eye makeup. When I have a cold a hankie is so much softer than a tissue. You know that dripping nose. Not the other ! Also I’ve been using my silver for everyday. It really is easy to keep shiny with Tarnex. That’s my 2 cents for today!

5:10 You just made my day using the reference to "Mrs. Bu-kay". "I don't see anyone listed here by that name ma'am." Interrupts her husband, "You might want to look again. It's spelled Bucket." I adored that show!
