I think this case was in 2017 or 2018, rent was cheaper then, and it would also depend on where it was located. My family rented a nice 3 bdrm 2 bath in las vegas for $1000 from 2015-2019

They probably felt sorry for the mother and child and took them in, but they should have notified the landlord. My mother moved in with me for awhile. When I found out she was coming I immediately let the manager know my situation. The manager said fine and I wasn’t charged more despite my mom not being on the lease. Plus I was living in place with an extra bedroom. I have noticed a lot of people are the types who would rather be sneaky and convincing when they might have had a better outcome by being upfront and honest.
