To echo others on here, I've watched all the retrospectives and I'm so glad you took the time and energy to make these. Tenchu was one of my favorite series from my formative years and it's so rarely talked about which is criminal considering it was the definitive Ninja experience for so long. Great work! Also fun fact, I'm quite certain Tesshu was heavily inspired by the character Bian The Assassin, the titular character portrayed by pre-Hollywood Ken Watanabe. It was quite popular in Japan and is a pretty fun series if you can find it some place (it was also remade last year apparently).

Why did you not cover the B-Side language option in this retrospective? To me, that's one of the most unique and memorable things about this game. Back when the game was released, the internet wasn't all that common. So when a friend told me at lunchtime that he heard Tajima say "I'm gonna stick this up your ass" when raising his gun, I did not believe him. But soon he invited me over, and there it was, what a wonderful way to replay the game. It turns the story into a raunchy comedy straight from the 00s. We did a full playthrough of Rikimaru's story and we could barely stop laughing. Give it a try if you haven't, you probably already unlocked it.

I've been on a Misson this week, to get as many Tenchu games as I can, playable. I've managed to dig out my loft - PS1, PS2 and the Xbox 360. PS1 For Tenchu 1, PS2 For Wrath (had to buy this), Fatal Shadows, and finally Tenchu Z for 360. That was the easy part, the hard part was getting them all to work. Had to buy a AV to HDMI for PS2, the PS3 will play PS1 Tenchu and finally found the 360 power plug that had hidden itself right the bloody corner of my loft. Sadly, apart from Tenchu Z, they all look horrible on my 77inch TV! In the future, might have buy an old plasma or crt.

Perfect review of this game. My biggest gripe is the story easily, though the combat isn't fantastic either. They literally could have taken either the Tenchu 1 or 2 routes and they chose some weird alternate reality something or other style instead. Great Tenchu review series. I'll definitely watch if you review more Tenchu games.

Regarding your primary weapons not feeling like they have enough reach, you could actually steal spears/bows & arrows from enemy guards. I remember the spear making boss fights a little too easy once you got the spacing and timing down. Edit after seeing end of section for Tesshu. Better late the never lol

Just wanna clear things up about the intro involving Metal Gear Solid. The original MSX game was just Metal Gear, and MGS isn't a reboot. MGS is a continuation of Snake's story after the events of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake when he lives his military life behind, and being brought back into it by Colonel Campbell pulling his back in.

Hey bit of constructive criticism as someone watching you for the first time. The dual example of Star Wars and Metal Gear to illustrate soft reboots felt a little forced. It’s a nitpick but the MSX game was not called Solid it was just Metal Gear. When there is a lack of attention to detail within the first 3 minutes it’s hard to commit to a video over 2 and a half hours long. You obviously are very passionate about gaming, looking forward to seeing what’s next.

This. Included with my copy of Metal Gear Solid was the story of the original games. I’m not sure how it would be a reboot in any way. This part of the video really confused me.

I'm pretty sure the MSX game is just "Metal Gear", not "Metal Gear Solid". Something that bugs me about Wrath of Heaven is that it comes off as being vaguely sexist. Hear me out. The big thing is the difference between Rikimaru and Ayame's Wrath of Heavens, with Rikimaru's being a flat oneshot while Ayame's just does damage but still sets her health to 1 making it virtually useless. I don't see a good reason to make Ayame's so much weaker. Other than that, it's really weird how to me how both of Ayame's endings kind of snub her. If you fought Onikage, then he appears out of absolutely nowhere to get stabbed by Rikimaru, who puts him down there despite the fact that this is something Rikimaru wholly failed to do in his own campaign. Why can he do that in Ayame's but not his? I must assume that the insinuation is that if you don't fight Onikage then Rikimaru drops him there since he doesn't come back later. Then, if you didn't fight Onikage, for absolutely no reason whatsoever a situation contrives itself where Ayame has to get bailed out by both Rikimaru and Tatsumaru instead. The one decision that impacts the ending has absolutely nothing to do with this event, it's just a Diabolus Ex Machina because there have to be two endings for some reason. Like I could get characters in the game being sexist because of the culture of the setting (though I don't know if that'd actually hold up to scrutiny, nor do I care), but the game itself just kind of treats Ayame poorly for no reason and with no narrative significance. Not enjoying the crackle spikes. I'm going to just assume that the ninja mind control mentioned in the Xbox version is distinct from the terrible skill in the PS2 version. The spear is mainly useful in Tesshu's final stage. Completely invalidates the bosses. A frontal stealth attack will fill a kanji and a half, for whatever that matters. Shoulder Thrust is also a finisher for a particular combo. Eh, if Rikimaru can kill fat cops in the future I could see a painting turning up in the past. The no kill is more like the first third or fourth of Gohda's castle. Simpsons clip is mute. The Grappling Hook Combo does work on bosses (it's a follow-up after a launcher, namely Rikimaru's little spin slash), and is the extender for the particular combo that the Shoulder Thrust finishes. Amagai Castle is extremely obnoxious, yes. Not on board with instant kill fake floors. Never noticed that about the zombie noises. I wouldn't call Feign Death the worst. Tied, at most. Ninja Mind Control is the worst technique. The sword from the Buddha Temple makes your jump lower, for whatever reason. I wish there were a single player version of the boss rush, or something like a fourth campaign that has no story whatsoever but you can use at least most of the Versus characters. I find myself prone to blitzing Ayame's graveyard stage, rank be damned, and then rerun it with the Yoto Swords to actually fight the zombies. Better to use a smoke bomb for Wrath of Heaven than a knockdown. Less risk of whiffing and leaving yourself open. If you whiff the smoke bomb, then just don't try Wrath of Heaven. Simple. Mr. CEO is oddly a distant prototype of Senator Armstrong. Again, single player versions of the co-op missions would've been nice. Ayame having a worse-in-every-respect version of Wrath of Heaven than Rikimaru makes the fact that she gets frontloaded bosses that you might want to dispose of as soon as possible extremely unfortunate. Correct about Dokuto being a boss weapon, but it's an absurdly strong one. Yeah, it makes no sense to not waste Onikage and then tell Rikimaru about the Jewel. Already complained about Ayame's ending at the head of this. Tesshu is a bad person for getting mad at Rikimaru, breaking into Gohda's castle, and murdering ultimately innocent men who are just doing their job. As stated earlier, a spear is monumental for dealing with Ukyo and Sakyo. Get them into the gutter and simply smack them as they try to jump up after you. They'll be completely helpless since they just beeline in your direction and can't block while jumping. Nothing to say about the B-Side dub?
