He sang this song to his daughter who has passed away. The song lyric elevated his love for his daughter to the mother land, but one can easily recognise this was singing from the heart. One can feel that he missed his daughter so much. Yet he is holding all that pain in. So powerful, so touching....

I love this. So glad you found it! There is a heart wrenching backstory to this song. Tengri wrote this song of yearning and love for his homeland and how it once was - his heaven. He sings of 'my girl" waiting for him - he lost his daughter when she was just 4 or 5 years old. Isn't is amazing how expanding our exposure to many kinds of music can be so powerful? I never would have thought I would be in tears listening to a 58 year old man from Mongolia singing in a language I don't know :) And that throat singing intro is amazing

Love the passion he puts into this song! Tengri is from Chinese Inner Mongolia, where over the years there has been a lot of destruction of the habitat/deforestation...There is a little introductory clip on the full version of Singer 2018, where it shows Tengri returning to his homeland to the forest he has planted and to which he adds more trees every year. (I also saw a comment somewhere that the person backstage who became very emotional during the performance, is also from Inner Mongolia.) Apparently, 'Heaven' is a very well-known song in China and was written by Tengri over 20 years ago. One of the singers shown backstage in the video, Hua Chenyu, did another version of it earlier in the same season of Singer (before he knew that Tengri would be joining the contest as well!)

Being introduced to Dimash on The Singer has also been my introduction to so much great music, amazing artists, many cultures, their traditions and their history. Tengri is one of those artists and his performance of Heaven brings me to tears every time. When I went down the rabbit hole with him, I discovered Mongolian music with their ethnic traditional instrumentation fused with heavy metal, hard rock and pop music. Here's another amazing artist's performance from Singer 2015, singing a Mongolian song and backed by well-respected Mongolian ethnic band, HangGai (also featuring Turkic throat singing). Jamal.....
