Hey, I was wondering if it's possible to use mini wobbler/spoon on Tenkara and found your channel! Subscribed. Thanks for a great job!

I’ve been a tenkara fanatic for many years now and always get weird comments and looks from bank based coarse anglers when I fish my local Avon and Stour rivers with my tenkara set up. I have caught most river species on flies, both wet and dry using my 12 ft tenkara rod and in particular many chub, some of several pounds which tested my gear to the limit. I have also had flounder on a shrimp imitation in my local estuary which was hugely satisfying. I am always thinking of innovative ways to use the method and that’s why your video grabbed my attention. One thought did occur to me though and that was that it would have been interesting if you had hooked a lively jack pike on your spoon, surely a fairly likely prospect. It’s one reason I wouldn’t dare try such a method in my local estuary because of the numerous mullet in summer and occasional sea trout against which my tenkara outfit would not have had a chance. However I think I’ll give it a go for flounder before spring and the mullet arrive. Really enjoyed your video, especially as I used to live near the canal in Bath.

Thanks David. It’s always fun to experiment. If you look back though my videos you will find one where I caught a 20inch chub and snapped my rod. Mostly down to my bad technique. It’s possible to catch some pretty big fish on tenkara if you have the right rod. I have a couple of big fish rods that I’m dying to try out on some big fish. Where is the estuary you are talking about with the mullet? It sounds like fun. Also which rod do you have? I have 12 rods of different sizes but mostly only fish with 3 of them. I bought a couple of rods from a market stall in Thailand back in the summer that I’ve yet to try out. So think that video will be coming soon. Anyway. Enjoy the fishing. Hopefully the water levels will drop back down to fish able levels and I can get back in the rivers soon. 👍🏻

Hi David. Very interesting thanks. In France it is almost the same. Most of the anglers come and ask me wich technique i use. They forget that they olderd and grandpas were fishing with bamboo and horse hair lines to catch salmon... exactly like Tenkara style. If u got mullets in ur estuary, try to catch em with dry flies who looks like piece of bread. It is very funny and sport way too. Quite hard cause mullets are so clever. Sincerly yours from France.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have made some floating bread flies and will try them next summer as the mullet are now no longer in the estuary in any numbers. Whereabouts in France do you fish ? I travel there regularly for holidays and have fished in Brittany and on the Mediterranean coast.@@guidopapeete1021

Beyond the obvious use of flies on a tenkara rod, there is definitely a case for the use of micro lures of all nature I would say. The only obvious limitations of a fixed line rod is the casting distance and the length they have to be to overcome this, which may cause an issue when held upright in some situations on a canal for instance. Given all that I have considered buying a tenkara rod. What length would you recommend, and what leader would you recommend? I like the look of the braided leaders

Braided lines are easier to cast I would say but I prefer level line

@@tenkarafanatic coming at this from a budget angler's point of view, some of the tenkara level lines are ridiculously high priced, when on the face of it, although tenkara level line is rated differently, it just looks to me that they are basically thicker fluorocarbon lines say between 0.27 mm and 0.31 mm for instance and what you are basically paying the premium for is that they are brightly coloured instead of clear lines, otherwise what is the difference between tenkara level line and ordinary thicker fluorocarbon of the same gauge?

@peteredwards1528 yes Peter is is expensive and to be honest you could probably use what ever you like. There are cheaper option out there. I like the Dragontail and RT line because as you say it’s very high vis. It also shows up on video better also If you check out the esoteric website there are some budget friendly option

Hi, I tried to reply to your reply to me but had a technical glitch so am writing a fresh note. I have 3 tenkara rods, a 12ft Hyase from Tenkara U.K. which no longer trades. It’s a great rod and I’ve had chub to just under 5lbs on it although it was a struggle to get to the net: it tends to be my default rod. I also have a Tenkarabum 36 which again is 12ft and supplied by the company of the same name in the USA, it is a bit stiffer than the Hyase but still a lovely rod. I also have a 9ft Kurenai, again from Tenkarabum in the states and it is something of a cult rod weighing less than 1 ounce. It is perfect for the trout syndicate of which I am a member on the Lymington river in Hampshire which is full of smallish wild brownies, stockies to 2 lb and sea trout. The Kurenai is a perfect tool for this river and manages the brownies and small sea trout of around 1-2 lbs which crop up fairly regularly from mid season I onwards. I would not use it in Christchurch Harbour ( you asked where the estuary was) because it would not cope with a mullet nor a decent sea trout of which there are plenty at times. I also have a 17ft Keiryu rod from the company of the same name. It is a beefy beast and would handle much bigger fish than my 2 twelve ft rods but is a bit unwieldy as it is designed to be fished with a small weight and bait although it works wonderfully with weighted nymphs but it’s not something you would want to be holding and casting all day. It’s brilliant for wading in the Stour in summer because you can easily fish in the channels between the rafts of weed which are difficult to manage with a shorter rod. My 12ft rods are perfect for dace, roach, chub and perch on both the Stour and the Avon and I’ve even managed a bream of around 5 lbs. Christchurch Harbour is a brilliant fishery and the mullet fishing with rag worm baited Mepps can be outstanding with follows almost every cast if you get it right. It’s also good for big bass on the lure, last year I had a couple of around 6lb on Do-Live Stick soft plastic lures. I have a season ticket which covers the Avon, the Stour and the Harbour but all are available on day tickets from local tackle shops. If you fancy a trip down in the late spring summer I’d be happy to show you around.

Thanks for the reply. I’d like to buy a Tenkara bum 36. I’ve heard nothing but good things about that rod. And thanks for the offer to show me around the fishing in your area. I’ll most definitely take you up on that. I’ve not weighed any of my fish to date but I intend to start I’ve purchased a weighing net and have some scales so no real excuse. I’m hoping to get out and fish again next week. As I have a few days to myself. Will hopefully be joining a friend in south Somerset or Dorset not sure where we will fish yet. Keep in touch. Subscribe if you haven’t done so already 😉and we’ll talk soon 👍🏻

That's a crazy way to fish. In the states we use cane poles, the advantage being they are long enough to swing the fish to the bank. This looks a hassle.

There’s quite a few tenkara anglers in the states. It’s much better than a cane pole. I often out fish bait casters and spinners. However, using a spoon for tenkara is not very common in the states. Most guys are using flies. It’s a very convenient and quick set up and very effective to cover a lot of water, as long as there’s not much tree cover. The rods collapse down to 22” or less in most cases so it is much easier to transport than a cane pole.

I use Dragontail Tenkara level line in a #3.5 or #3 dragontailtenkara.com/collections/level-lines/products/dt-levelline and a variety of YAMATOYO FLUORO HARISU Fluorocarbon esoterictackle.co.uk/tippet/162-yamatoyo-fluoro-harisu.html I like the Dragontail level line as it’s very easy to see in pretty much any light conditions. And I like the YAMATOYO as its worked well for me and it’s very cheap in comparison to other brands such as Orvis or Rio
