Hey, great video as always but just a little detail. The rivalry in the Empire about which side to join was quite nuanced but the main rivalry was between Enver Pasa (Pasa is a title roughly meaning general/admiral or a civilian administrator of certain rank) the Minister of War and Cemal Pasa the Minister of the Navy. Enver had, as you mentioned been the attaché in Berlin and Cemal was pro French. On top of this, while it is well known the Ottoman army was mainly modernized by German methods and advisors, it is less widely known that the Ottoman Navy had a similar relationship with Great Britain. This of course influenced their views on which side to take. Even the military branches weren't monolithic, some army officers were also French trained. This is all before getting into the civilian administration and the Grand Vizier, and other Ministers. Keep up the good work

It is also worth meantioning that the Ottoman empire tried to join the Entante at first but was not accepted. The Entante thought the Ottomans would be nothing but a weak ally to protect because of their major loss in the Balkan wars. Instead of letting them in they asked them to stay neutral.

1:00 "Pasha" isn't a last name. It's a respectable title (actually more like a suffix) and it shouldn't be used without a name. You can easily note that a lot of important people were called by their first names + "Pasha" (which means something like "Lord"). Last names weren't common in the turkic world back then.

Actually the Ottoman government tried everything in their power to join Britain and France but their requests were repeatedly denied because the British and the French wanted to keep the bosphorus open for supplying the Russians and they thought best way to ensure that the straits were open was to keep the Ottomans out of the war. When the Ottomans entered the war and won at Gallipoli, western allies couldn't supply Russia which was a huge blow to the ill equipped Russian army. Some Turkish historians even suggested that the Ottoman victory in Gallipoli contributed to the 1917 Bolshevik revolution in Russia.

Kind of makes you wonder what the timeline might have looked like if the Ottomans had decided not to side with Germany and Austria. While it's no guarantee that the Entente would have helped the Ottomans in any way (far from it), if anything it would have meant that the Arab Revolt would not have had direct support from the British. And for better or worse, THAT would have changed a few things in that timeline.
@thomasrinschler6783 Жыл бұрын
Greece might very well have joined the Central Powers as a result, since the government was deeply divided on which side, if any, to support. It would have been interesting to see the Greeks and Bulgarians squabble over any attacks on Constantinople.
