I recently purchased 16 gauge string because I got tired of having to string my rackets so often. It's good to know what I'm giving up by doing this. End of the day, I'm not playing for money just for fun so I think I'll just learn to deal with less spin and power haha. Honestly, why not work out my body more trying to really dig deep for more swing speed? Maybe I'll end up gaining some muscle this way XD

A lot of things you mentioned really depends on the tension as well; not just the string diameter. Power, spin, control,... these things do not depend only on string gauge, but also on the tension. A lot of people like to say "all things being equal, string X will produce more Y". But it's the wrong way to go about it. You really have to adjust the variables accordingly. Thick string with high tension, thick string with low tension, thin string with high tension, thin string with low tension, not to mention the different mains and crosses combinations...these will all play differently.

another difference between say 18g and 16g is weight. and since it's in the hoop of the racquet, you can feel the swing weight difference.

Tennisspin, i dare you to try the following setup: Take a yonex ezone 98 or racket with a similar string density and put the following string setup in it: Solinco confidential 1.15 @ 23 kg in main Solinco tour bite 1.10 @ 20 kg in cross Good feel, good spin, crisp, good ball pocketing, good control, good durability and tension maintenance I play with plenty spin (not like rafa) on both forehand and backhand and had so far 5 tennis sessions (singles 2 sets) with it without breaking the strings and very little tension loss according to that plastic tension measurement tool i have. Try it, it feels and plays fantastic. I say the ezone as i also have the clash 98 and clash 100, which both have a more open 16x19 string pattern, which have the tour bite 1.20 in the cross.

IF you have a junior player it would be better to take a softer co-poly than the arm-breaker string tour byte at a higher gauge. Otherwise you might loose more control than necessary. Many top juniors where I live have e.g. used wilson revolve or wilson revolve spin also the new solinco hyper-g soft is a lot softer than solinco tour byte. Many small tennis shops only cater a limited number of strings so if you want to have it strung up at a smaller shop buy some strings online if they are not available.

What is your take on string weight? I have noticed that along with the string’s construction, the actual weight of the string can affect the way a racquet plays. A heavier string can bump the swing weight up or 2+ points compared to a lighter string. I have a swing weight machine and have tested this. And to be clear I am referring to two string of the same gauge. Is there a way we can easily determine the weight of the string before purchasing? Or are there any rules of thumb? Mono vs co-poly, vs multi? Thanks

How the gauge of a shaped poly is measured? For round string, it is obvious that the diameter is the gauge. But for a shaped poly, such as HyperG, which is square shaped, gauge is the diagonal or the side length.

@dave-ld8mo

I am currently using the Babolat Banana Pure Aero. Do you think I should try a thicker string (like 135), because my racket already generates lots of spin. I would gain control and durability. However, I would lose spin. I probably should string one racket with a thick string and one with thin string and compare the feel.

Seeing a lot of studies proving higher gauge meaning more spin. Nadal uses 15L but I know you could make the argument that it's because he'd break them too soon otherwise.
@jaysean9589
@jaysean9589 3 жыл бұрын
Oh and the study also implies you get more spin with thicker gauge but only if you are strong enough with your technical ability and power. So Nadal would get less spin in a thinner gauge, is the implication here. I'm sure this would matter for some of you. I hit heavy and hard topspin and will be testing this for myself.

You can't reduce swing weight unless you reduce static weight.
@petershort936
@petershort936 3 жыл бұрын
 Right, and using a thinner gauge does that...not by a lot, a few grams, but that brings down SW a point or two. Basically going from a 16 gauge to a 19 gauge reduces weight in the hoop and lowers SW a point or two. So, not exactly static weight, but strung static weight.
@applesforakbar
@applesforakbar 3 жыл бұрын
@@petershort936 If you're talking about the swingweight unstrung there's no way to alter that unless you remove weight. If you're comparing SW strung from a 16g to say a 19g yes you are correct
