Tennis Tactics - How To Hold Your Serve In Matches. When it comes to winning singles matches in tennis, nothing is more important than being able to hold your serve games, meaning that you win the games in which you serve. If you are a good returner who is able to break your opponent's serve but can't hold your own, you'll always struggle to win matches, especially against stronger opponents who know how to win their own service games.
In this free lesson, coach Simon Konov and coach Alex Slabinsky of Top Tennis Training will show you how to hold your serve in matches, using certain serve set plays.
This means your serve plus the first shot you'll hit after your opponent's return. Depending on where you hit your serve, you can anticipate an opponent's likely return and then plan your next shot from their return.
There are six main targets to aim for when you serve in tennis,
1. Out wide on the deuce side service box
2. Into the body on the deuce side service box
3. Down the T on the deuce side service box
4. Down the T on the advantage side service box
5. Into the body on the advantage side service box
6. Out wide on the advantage side service box
Within each of these six targets, you can mix up the spins you use and the power you serve with. This can be a game in itself, for instance, if you serve to target six, you can use a kick serve, a flat serve or a slice serve, and you can increase or reduce the power. This will throw off the returner's timing and make it harder for them to build a rhythm.
Then with your first shot, you will have options on where to go.
You can break down the court into three zones, each zone being around 33% of the width of the singles court:
1. Zone one starts at the singles sideline on the deuce side and ends a few feet to the right side of the center line.
2. Zone two starts off-center on the right side and ends off-center on the left side of the court.
3. Zone three starts off-center on the left side and finishes at the singles sideline on the advantage side of the court.
You can then make your own pattern of play using numbers:
1. Number one with your serve followed by number one with your first shot. This would make an 11, or a 1-1.
2. Number one with your serve followed by number two with your first shot. This would make an 12, or a 1-2.
3. Number one with your serve followed by number three with your first shot. This would make an 13, or a 1-3.
4. Number two with your serve followed by number one with your first shot. This would make a 21, or a 2-1.
5. Number two with your serve followed by number two with your first shot. This would make a 22, or a 2-2.
6. Number two with your serve followed by number three with your first shot. This would make a 23 or 2-3.
7. Number three with your serve followed by number one with your first shot. This would make a 31, or a 3-1.
8. Number three with your serve followed by number two with your first shot. This would make a 32 or a 3-2.
9. Number three with your serve followed by number three with your first shot. This would make a 33 or a 3-1.
These are the options you have on the deuce side only, you can repeat all of these on the advantage side.

When people in my tennis club serve, they go through 3 steps: 1. Prey. They vow that if the ball gets in the service box, they will do anything! 2. 1st Serve. It goes at about 200 mph (320 kph for our euro friends). The ball goes over the service box, over the court, over the head of the opponent, hits the back fence as if attempting to make a hole in it. 3. 2nd Serve. It goes at about 25 mph. Now the opponent preys that the ball hits the net or misses the service box. Tennis is much more complicated that anyone thinks.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial well Although I like tennis lessons I like watching games maybe you guys should do a video playing matches Ive seen other channels do that and then they do a second video reviewing techniques done and what faults players did. Its a fun way of interacting with the audience by showing actual games. Also if you want to do a technical video I dont think I've ever seen how to hit volley or drop shots clise to the net. Hey guys hope you're doing well during these difficult times. I know this might be a random question but how do you hit a defensive lob? Do you like pop it up flat or sort of like chip it under the ball? Also, how do you take the racket back?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
You can hit it quite flat and go for more height with that option or you can add more underspin to the ball and aim lower but it will dip more than the flat option. The take back will be different for both, the flat dink would require less of a swing and it's all about controlling the angle at contact and the underspin option would require a slight swing to the ball

Great video on tactics! I might have to go against my coach's advice of passive play: up the middle or only crosscourt sending it back the way it came. But it seems very not nice guy to try and beat the opponent with difficult balls. I'm told only college players and pros should consider learning tactics. What if your serve is slow due to injury that is slow to heal?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
If someone told me that, they'd get fired on the spot. Tactics work at EVERY level, even at the lowest levels of tennis, the player who usually wins is the one who knows how to win points. If your serve is slow, you should make sure you mix it up well and find out why the injury is not healing, see a physio, start doing plenty of rehab work with bands etc
@jlook6070
@jlook6070 4 жыл бұрын
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I really need a video on how become a more aggressive player without crossing the line and becoming a "mean player". Also how to develop a sense of urgency while playing. But yeah I need tactics for sure. As for my serve I can only do flat and slice. I mix it up between mid box at the body and at the body at the T. I'm trying to find a clinic that specializes in tennis injuries. Someone recommended Racquet Fit but it's located multiple states away. I know it's something like the rotator cuff or something near there. Symptoms are clicking sounds when the shoulder moves loose in the socket and pain. Kick serve (any overhead serve motion) and overhead smash are completely off-limits. After the trophy pose, the racquet drop and everything thereafter is sub par so loss of pace is understandable. Strength training hasn't fully done the job, rest has so far been the best remedy.
