@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I've been looking for a nice wall for six months, but nearly all of them are somebody's walls; as soon as I start hitting a ball onto them, an angry person will turn up and stop me. Being desperate, I bought a notorious tennis training kit with a ball attached to a rubber band. It didn't work at all. The action of the ball was so unnatural, it didn't feel like tennis at all. Finally, I found one wall with which I can probably practice volleys only. How about effective lob? Where to aim it and when with what grip? And how to master it on your own.

Hey Simon - I’ve heard some debate about the effectiveness of the wall, specifically how it can trick you into hitting hard without knowing the real depth of a shot. What do you think are the shortcomings of the wall to be aware of? As you’re demonstrating here, it can clearly be a good practice tool. Thanks so much for your videos, really great work.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын
For sure wall training has some downsides. As you say, you don't know where the ball would go on a normal court, however, if you don't hit the balls too hard and focus more on control along with aiming higher than net level etc, it should translate over well to a proper court. Hello simon great video! Just wanna ask why my wall seem to give faster ball return, i couldnt catch up.. is it because of the material of the wall.. tq simon keep it up bro..
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын
It could be that, I'm hitting with good levels of topspin also which will make the ball pop up more. Maybe you're hitting too flat?

Hi Simon. Enjoyed watching the different drills on your video. Just started playing tennis and would like to practice some of those drills. I believe you said you was using a practice /training ball. Can you tell me the name of the ball and how I can purchase? Thanks in advance Sam
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, I’m using a normal tennis ball, just not a brand new one. Any ball can do the job, however, brand new balls will fly too much and you’ll destroy them very quickly against the wall

Only part way though, and this is going to sound, but I got more of an appreciation for Simon's level of tennis watching this. It's not that easy maintaining form on the wall!

Thank you so much for the topic, and we will try to do it at home. I am 8 years old and I just started playing on a big court, with green balls, and a 26 inched racket. Could you please tell me how often and long I have to practice? My name is Nicole, thank you!

Hi Simon! 2 questions if you don’t mind. I love your videos! 1. does the type of wall matter? I think the one at my tennis facility is brick but it does have those lines painted on it. 2. do you have specific racket recommendations for beginners please? I like the way yours looks. At times, I feel my racket is too large or long for my hands or something. Thank you in advance if you reply, xoxo

Thanks for the great video. When hitting against the wall I find that I have less time for coiling my body, rotating the heaps, following through etc... As a result I tend to play only with my arm. I'm wondering if that could give me bad habits/automatism. Do you think this is true and if yes how I could avoid that?

I'm trying to improve with each shot, but I find that the ball I use bounces a lot, does that influence being able to have continuity in the shots, and not have to stop every 5 seconds? Maybe I'm still quite afraid to hit the ball and not want to throw it away or to the other side of the wall, because I lose them. Thanks for your advice, and for sharing. excellent video.

Yes, using an older ball can help for sure

The best tennis wall I've played on was the side of a grade school. the asphalt play lot next to it was usually empty and I used street chalk to draw in the net as well as the full half of the court on my side. The building was about 5 stories on this side with almost no windows so I never hit the ball OVER. I could practice lobs, smashes really easily. But yeah playing the wall is great for all the reasons mentioned in this video. It's also a way to be really creative about training. But to be fair he should have left at least one shanked ball in the edit because that is definitely part of it (except for playing on that school wall. but they built an addition over the school yard which is now located on the top of the building: no more awesome wall).

You make it look so easy. Question: Is the ball somewhat deflated or fresh out of a can? While you're smacking it, it seems to come back at a slightly slower pace than expected.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
The ball in this video was not brand new but had been used a few times, wasn't a deflated ball however. I suggest using a slightly older ball, to begin with, and once you start improving on the wall you can start using harder balls. @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thank you for your quick response. You guys are the best YT tennis coach out there. I have two suggestions: 1) A video or a pdf that maybe refer to your prior vids, that present a, say, 10-week training schedule for various levels. Maybe for 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0. 2) a live stream Q&A!

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial A Pro at our club recommended your KZbin channel while I was ranting about how hard it is to find good instruction online. Your videos have greatly helped my game. Regarding your question, help on the mental part of the game. For example, when someone in doubles is right on top of the net I feel bad going at them. Tennis is such a mental game - lol.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial You are wellcome.Thanks for your answer. There are many actually, but the most imperative at the moment is the serve. What Im looking for is the correlation between the stances and The take-backs and the toss hight and direction. Would be nice to see the various styles analized and compared with a software?

Simon, I frequently wall hit. Your technique of course is fabulous. This is much harder than you make it look. I found early on that if you dont hit the ball pretty darn straight, it won't come back to you. I also found out straight away that a regular new tennis ball seems to come back so fast that its darn near impossible to prepare to properly execute a groundstroke. It appears you also are using a pressure-less ball. Am i correct or do i just stink that badly to be unable to use a regular ball?

You can practice overheads with a wall too. Stand about 20 feet away from the wall and smash the ball so it hits the ground a few feet in front of the wall, then it will pop up well over your head so you can smash it again. Of course on a real court you wouldn't aim to hit the ground less than 20 feet in front of you (unless you are very close to the net), but at least you get to practice timing, coordination, and footwork on the overhead.
