If my memory is correct, the SI number was a Stiffness Index. The number indicated the deflection, in millimeters, if a reference weight was suspended from the tip of the racket. More flexible rackets deflected more, hence the higher number, like 6.0. The early Profiles and Hammers were very stiff, hence the low values like 2.7 or 3.6.

IIRC Wilson changed it a couple of times. It DID start out as Swing Index (it's printed on some racquets on the inside of the shaft), but at some point it was changed to Stiffness Index and later on it was changed back, again. A bit confusing!

PS 90 Tour Hypercarbon was actually designed for Pete Sampras who retired in 2002. Roger played that PS 90 Tour Hypercarbon in Wmbledon 2003 but with a different drilling (more open) around the PWS. This different drilling was standard beginning with the k factor version. The PS 90 ncode had the same drilling as the PS 90 Tour Hypercarbon but with a stiffer beam. PS 90 Tour Hypercarbon is in my opinion the best Pro Staff with tons of feel. PS 85 is more precise because of the smaller head size.

Correct, we actually talked about it privately and how grommets pre-and-post k90 are no interchangeable due to the spacing of the strings near the PWS. Pre-k90 = denser sweet spot, post-k90 = open sweet spot. Good eye buddy!

Agree with Angus on the reason for Pros to switch. When I play an rec players with an old school game, I love hitting with the 90. However, when I hit against younger players that hit whippy, top-spin, heavy/high forehands, it takes a toll. That said, I would still rather play with the 90 and rarely switch to a bigger head size if I can avoid it.

Saw the thumbnail with the Hyper Carbon PS Tour and had to click. Still my favorite racket of all time. The Asia version with the St. Vincent stencil is really good too if you like to customize as the weight is lower than the Western version. Great great racket. Thanks for bringing it out. Edit: I also have 2 of the HC PS Tour with 100 sq in head. Asia only release. A bit more powerful than the 90, but about 20g lighter. I prefer hitting with the 90 sq in and would love for Wilson to do a Pro Lab retro release.

@@Joecuzzi I am not really familiar with the racquet, but looking at the pics and the specs online, I don't think it is that similar. Seems the Surge has a lower strung weight. Looks to be slightly tapered and the throat is rounded. Whereas the HC PS Tour 100, is like the original PS Tour 90, just bigger. Box beam vs tapered shaped of the Surge. I think the Tour 90 was like 17mm beam, and the 100 was 22mm. Also, HC PS Tour 100 was 16 x 20 string pattern. 5.1 Surge 100 was 16 x 19 according to TW.

Used to play with the 6.1 classic when i was a teenager. Went on to play with radicals and pure drive but now come back to the rf97. I have a v11 and v12. Much more stable for my 1 hand backhand. Great swing on my serve with pretty effortless power

I have the prostaff 90 which is a beautiful frame to hit with but I only use it for practice as it's too demanding for me in matches. I have the version 1 red and black RF97A, the V12 blue laver cup version and absolutely love both. The red and black is more crisp feeling but zero issues with a full soft poly bed strung at lower tension and the power and spin is addictive. The blue laver cup is my all time favorite frame. It's more comfortable feeling though the flex is the same as the red and black version. I can absolutely pancake the ball with a full flat swing and slices stay really low. You should review the prostaff 97s. The string pattern is 18x17 but the thin beam and 65 flex plus a lighter frame with high enough swing weight makes it a great frame for flat drives, excellent spin, slice and relatively more comfort in a lighter package.

The ps 97s is a underrated frame.It has a thin beam similar to the 90 but less weight and stiffness.Much more playable than the Rf97 imo.The first version red and black felt incredible however the 2016 matte finish was never the same as the original.

Prostaff started as the name suggests, the top-of-the-line professional quality Wilson racket, but as always once the reputation was established, it got used by Wilson for all sorts of average rackets. I had a "Hyper Prostaff Blitz" , and as some wag suggested, the hypercarbon must have been in the decals! it was a bad combination of low weight , low power and low feel, although some thought it was ok with a lot of weight added. My favourite Prostaff was actually an atypical model, that I bought on impulse just because I was on holiday in the US when it was just released, the Prostaff ROK; it was another low power Prostaff, but lots of feel from a very thin beam. Sadly it was the only stick I have ever cracked during play, and apparently it was a weakness of that frame, but a great stick while they lasted.

Didn’t start playing with Pro Staff until I got several used v11s from a friend earlier this year. Took a little while to adjust to them but they are my all-time favorite sticks. That being said, another friend of mine had me try his v11 RF and that felt like swing a heavy and unwieldy sword

Excellent job guys. I'm from the 80's as a junior so we got to demo ALL the new graphite frames. So I have insane insight on the front end of the titanic shift from wood and metal over to graphite/carbon . Lastly the Wilson Javelin was a springboard to the ps 85. And I remember when a buddy got sent a PS and we all got to play with it. Firm and buttery , stiffer than my rossignol f-100 but not jarring.

i'm from the post-90 (racquet, not decade) generation but I stocked up on the 2014 pro staff 90 over the last several years......they're just flawless and I only play 4.5 so the level is not so great that it seems like a liability. If I ever get to play a higher level, I'll only believe the 90 is obsolete when I can't hit the ball anymore but until then I won't take the dogma about bigger being better on faith. It has the perfect ratio of weight to maneuverability to execute the one-handed backhand in my opinion. The 97 doesn't quite have this quality in my view, although i've only tried it briefly. thanks for the entertaining video.

I feel the PS line changed when they replaced Kevlar with other materials. It just didn’t feel like a PS. When the PS 2014 added back Kevlar it resumed the traditional feel! That’s when I finally replaced my PS85. I now use the V10 97 with lead tape to make it an “RF Lite”, for lack of a better term.

Harry! Steffi Graf used a Pro Staff either 7.8 or 7.5 SI. It was a under utility racquet on the market at the time. It is one of the great softer 95 sq inch frame Pro Staff sticks. It plays great with a hybrid string job.

I’ve gone through almost every single version of prostaff that Federer used. I still have close to 30 racquets in my closets. My first true players racquet was the head prestige, then I went to the prince graphite, and from then on, all prostaff. There seems to be a lot of hate towards the 6.0 95 or 95s but I can tell you why I really like it. If you are past your prime and your body ache like hell after a match, it’s a good switch. It’s much more maneuverable, serve friendly, but still give you that solid feel of the 85 or 90 when you hit it dead center. There’s plenty of power if you have a good form and plow through the ball. That said, it will not match the power of babolat aero. But if you still like the feel of the classic 85 or 90 but need a little more forgiving racquet, give the 6.0 95 a try. If Federer had used a babolat pure drive back in the days, his forehand would have been even better. Racquet tech has changed a lot and I think the babolat impact the power the most. If you like the 97rf, u mind as well switch to the babolat aero. At least it’s more manauverable and bigger sweet spot.

Love these vids. My tennis world equipment wise is sooo different. Often add 80-100g of lead so yep playing with lead! Wilson was sooo confusing. At one point SI meant stiffness index with lower being stiffer (the amount the racquet would deflect with a given force) but then somehow they associated the stiffness with swing and it morphed to swing index. Short swings got stiff racquets and long swings got flexy sticks. I had a long swing but loved stiff racquets so it stopped making sense. Prostaff 125. Omg. I played that stick and broke so many strings. Also when I used that racquet, it was the time in my tennis history where I could never ever ever get the ball in. Set me back years.

I have 3 pro staff 90s (hypercarbon) that I competed it with all through high school! Highly recommend a poly/syn blend with about a 58-60lbs. tension. I could see why announcers called it a, "Wilson Wand"

That black colored 6.0 ProStaff was made in a 95 sq. inch in the old days. The red&white 95 retro at 11oz and it's spun version I liked because I could customize the stick. There are tennis tour pros using 93 square inch racquets.

I used the original PS 85 6.0 in college. At least the ones I had would crack at 3 and 9 o'clock on the frames, right in the PWS section. Switched to the PS Classic 6.1 and have used them ever since. Great combination of weight, power and control if you have the game for it. I've demo'ed almost every PS since, but have not found a racket worth switching to. The RF 97 plays a lot like the Classic 6.1, just more flexible in the throat, which makes since because Federer played more from the baseline than serve and volley, which suits the Classic 6.1 better.

wilson controlled the swing index (SI) with frame width. the thinner the frame, the more flex, the more perceived feel and ability to snap to contact with a faster swing. thicker frames did go down in the index (think SledgeHammer models), less flex, and were better for slower, shorter swings (older players). this all went away when they stopped using kevlar and graphite and went to stiffer, lighter carbon fibers with poly strings, allowing players of all levels stiffer rackets but more control at high swing speeds.

Angus, have you tried using rubbing alcohol or even acetate with a cotton ball to remove the rubberized topcoat? A friend was able to remove it on their old Pro Kennex Redondo that had the same matte rubberized finish the current PS line does.

i have a love hate relationship with the rf97, i whish they have kept the thin profile and weight of the 90s, its just feels cluncky and inconsistent on my forehand swing, feels like a club. the perfect frame for me was if they made a ps90 with a slightly bigger sweatspot, so right now Im still in the fence and stuck with the phantom 93ps.

I found the only way to get my rf97 to play less clunky was to do the fed lead under the grommet. Little harder to get going but it flys through the air like a smaller racquet once it gets moving.

I love my V13 but I have never played with older models. The weight is perfect for me. It's about 12.2 oz when strung. I have tried to add weight to it, about 0.3 oz., but I didn't think there was enough improvement to make up for the additional weight.

The "6.0" stiffness index is home many millimeters the racket bent with a fixed weight hanging from the top of the hoop and the racket in a horizontal position and secured at the end of the grip. The lower the si, the stiffer the racket.... Profile 2.7, Hammer 5.2, ProStaff 5.5 etc. I don't remember how heavy the weight that was used.

Jimmy Conners played with the original Prostaff 85. It was one of the earliest graphite rackets after the wood racket era. To someone who grew up using a wood racket the 85 square inch head would have seemed quite big and the flex quite stiff.

Let me try to answer that. The reason why I never used the 6.1 line, beginning with the Classic 6.1 was because it was too stiff of a racquet for me. And at the time, I felt the 95 and 21mm beam "swung" too big for me. It was simply a way powerful racquet for me. So I stuck with frames that were in the 6.0 lineage. 6.1 was, and probably still used by pros. Del potro used the 6.1 18x20.

I guess Edberg's disguised one was pretty much it after Krajicek moved to Yonex. Courier continued using an un-stenciled Pro Staff probably b/c of no contract. Sampras was particular with using discontinued Pro Staffs made in St. Vincent.

The K Factor Pro Staff 90 is such an awesome racquet. In my opinion it plays better than the RF97A (i have V11 and V12). I got the prostaff 95 and 95S as well. 95S just chewed through strings.

Wilson should keep currently a version of the PS as following: 95~98 sq.pol. head size, 20~21mm flat frame, box bin with the PWS bumps (at 3 and 9 o'clock), 310mm balance, 315gr weight, 16X19 string bed, made of graphite and aramid (kevlar), natural calf skin leather grip and original 6.0 cosmetic/V13 cosmetic version.

You skipped BLX 90 Tour (black/red/gold) and Amplifeel 90 (white/gold) and maybe some others? The BLX90 is boardy >48 lbs but feels good at lower tension (think Davis Imperial cushy). I still have couple BLX90s lying around for "air tennis." I agree 6.1 95S was "weirdest" -- but feels sweet and decreases impact on wrist due to open string pattern. Harry should look into whether more open patterns are better for doubles play (remember one of the Woodies used a 14x16 Prince, and maybe the Bryans did too).

Actually, the first Wilson Pro Staff racquet was Wilson’s best wooden racquet. You have a bunch of them on your racquet wall. These racquets disappeared in the mid 70’s, along with all of the wooden racquets.

Why doesn't wilson make the PS in 85 in the current technology material, that racket is a beast, it's the blades of Golf clubs, it's not for everyone, in my later years when I was 35 stopped using it as it injured my shoulders but from 20yrs old to 35yrs old it was my weapon of choice and I loved everything about it, espacially serving. I'm 3yrs older than PSamras and he was my idol in the time when I was playing my best tennis. I still have 2 of them and would love to see if they make a new generation PS 85.

Yes. A K Factor KProstaff 88. I own a couple and play with them regularly. They’re 9pts headlight when stock; Where the Federer 90” models of the same era feel like a scalpel at 12pts headlight, the K88’s feel like a machete with more power potential & plow through due to the balance and slightly higher static weight, despite the smaller headsize. Wilson unfortunately seemed to have stopped sponsoring his return to tennis for exhibition matches and Pete began using a modded Babolat Pure Storm GT at appearances.

Angus is very knowledgeable about the Pro Staff (PS) history so always enjoy when he's on as a great resource. I'll take the PS 90 (2014 issue w/the 0.5mm increase in beam width) over any of the PS 97 head size versions any day of the week. Also, never liked the original PS 6.1 95 as a completely different stick than the PS 85/90 line and wasn't anywhere close to the amazing feel & control of the PS 85/90 issues imo. It's arguable whether Federer made the right decision in switching from the PS 90 to the PS 97 as he only won 3 of his 20 slams with the larger head size & some say his forehand (arguably his biggest weapon) wasn't as good after the change. I believe if he would have stayed w/the PS 90 (which he won 17 slams with) he'd have won more than just the 3 slams he won after 2013.

@@vnishpt7036 good point, he played with a black prototype of the frame in the 2014 final so yes, I think you are correct but even against Rafa in the 2019 FO semi final his backhand held up quite well. Of course this time Rafa went more to the FH wing or mixed it up. No question, the racquet made it easier. Speaking for myself I have the red and black as well as the blue laver cup. It's unbelievable how easy it is to hit a hard flat drive off both wings. The spin is fantastic as well. The frame is not just hype.

85 version was a byproduct of 110, which came earlier. Interestingly 110 was unsuccessful compared to POG.

I honestly think that the problem with the 90 PS we that you would get punished if you sliced the ball. There was nothing on the ball when you slice with that racquet. With the 97 PS, you get way more hefty on the ball with a slice and with the groundstrokes. Fed needed that, since he was the king of slice. Nadal made him pay every time.

I wonder where the Pro Staff ROK fits into the lineup. It's an oddity--18X20 93 inches and looks like a misshapen Volkl C10. Taylor Dent supposedly used an ROK at one time, anyone else? Also, the Hyper Pro Staff 5.0 is a seidom mentioned but personal favorite.

I've got a couple of Pro Staff ROKs stashed away somewhere. Never got on with them (Used the PS85 for a while before that), was supposed to be made to be Wilson's version of the Head Prestige Mid in being very flexible and soft feeling. Would have been perfect as never liked the head grip shape. It was very flexy but had the densest string pattern I've ever seen, like crazy dense and just didn't feel right.

The carbon material doesn't last as long as the kevlar-graphite, in my opinion. I tried the 97 version and hated it. I used the ncode 90 for years, and the 97 version is just less maneuverable, which I hate. I also do not like the extra power, which is probably due to the fact that I don't like the feel of full polyester string bed or poly in mains.

" This just proves that Wilson does not care what that segment of "serious 3.5/4.0 that play regularly" want. It is all about marketing and spoon feeding you what pros are using. Knowing that most rec players (typically the casual player) will follow along. The truth of the matter is that there is a segment of rec players that would be well-served if the hugely popular ProStaff 6.1si and 4.2si was still offered. There was really no reason to discontinue this racquet. I would be interested in a new ProStaff 6.1si. But the only options are buying used or paying high prices for new on Ebay.

The game didn’t evolve, the handicapped rackets were made and marketing ruined the game. The game actually devolved as the amateur and pros adopted the easier to use rackets this watered down the complexities of playing kind of like admitting the kid into the school who could not pass the classes.

I’m going to take a contrarian view here and state that this video is actually a piss poor treatment of the evolution of the prostaff line. There is very little examination of what playing characteristics differentiate the classic prostaffa vs the 97s. All we hear is that the 97 has more power and thicker beam and is therefore superior. Well by that metric everyone should play Babolat pure drives. Roger himself admitted that for all he gained from the 97, his forehand was never quite as pure as it was with the 90. The presenters go on to talk about how Wilson then went on to discontinue the 6.1 95 racquets. Funny then how this relic continues to be used by many top touring pros - Del Potro, Bautista Agut, Dan Evans, and many others. Shapovalov and Rublev used them until a few years ago. This video does a real disservice to those who do not know that they are being fed a diet of cliches, half truths and glaring omissions in this presentation.

Believe me! I tried hard to hold back criticism but this ps line walk through sucks. Go to tennis warehouse forum classic racquet for better information. This guy don’t even know it’s called hyper pro staff. It’s printed on racquet. For the last generation of ps90, it’s 2014 ps90. But here they jump to 95 and twinner versions. That sucks. Ncode and box were missing. There are significant difference between various ps85 and skipped. They title was discuss why and how ps line evolve… but they didn’t talk about it. To give quick answer, the Wilson marketing got Brain dead as head. Prestige mid could be best baseline player racquet and ps85 could be best serve and volley. Both products were perfect but companies kept screwing a perfect design and disappointing everyone.
