I miss seeing contrasting styles of play. This match is a good example, serve volley vs baseliner makes for entertaining rallies. Didn't love it when you get big servers (& volley) like Sampras and Ivanisevic... that was just a snooze fest especially at Wimbledon when most points would end in 3 shots or less.

As a 10year old i loved Andre's outfits. That 1990/91 Air Tech Challenge Nike thing was so good. Neon yellow with black/white and the other outfit was hot lava with black/white..later on he got varsity purple aswell . You can actually generate *more* pace with a continental forehand grip. That's why you use it when hitting a flat serve. The problem is a lack of *control,* because you can't create much top spin with a continental forehand grip. Therefore it's more difficult to keep the ball in the court. Anyone disagree?

​@@theacechipI was a huge Edberg fan and I remember that he was losing to lot of relatively unknown players in 1995 (he was 29 then). For instance, he lost to Dick Norman at Wimledon, second round, Norman was ranked below 200 at that time. As a result of these loses, Edberg droped out of top 50 by middle of 1996. But he played very well in the second half of 96, beating Chang, Martin (twice), Ivanisevic (twice), Krajicek, Muster, Henman (twice). Hovewer, by then, he had already made a decision to retire at the end of the year and he ended his career ranked 14. I think he made good decision, because in spite of some good wins in 96 he had lost his consistancy and was often simply owerpowered by younger players. He did not win single title in 96.

I love Andre's brutal honesty in regards to why he ran off the court at 5 all in the 3rd set. Playing a tennis match in 100+f degree weather with the heat rising up into your body from the hardcourt takes a huge toll on you physically. This was basically a match of attrition, both players were crushing forehands and backhands trying to get the points done as quickly as possible. I miss those days. 2 legends and warriors of the game. I love 90's tennis!

I have a vivid memory of watching that match during my childhood. In the final set, Edberg staged an impressive comeback while Agassi found himself in trouble. And then, he suddenly ran off the court - I had no idea such tactics were allowed in tennis. I felt a bit cheated since Edberg, still my all-time favorite player, was involved. But now, in hindsight, I realize how fortunate I was to witness a rare phase in modern tennis where two contrasting playing styles coexisted. I took it for granted at that time. Nowadays, I struggle to sit through an entire match.

Andre is super-fast and has hit 10,000,000,000 groundstrokes in his life. Stefan is super-agile and has a fantastic serve/volley....but Agassi eats serves for breakfast. I saw Agassi play Becker, and Becker didn't know what hit him. This is when Agassi first appeared on the tour. Boris hit an ace...but wait, the 'ace' is coming back at 100mph for a winner. WTF? Poor Boris got nailed that day.

Indeed Edberg always did better than Becker against Agassi: he had a better 2nd serve and was faster at going to the net. Unfortunately, due to recurring injuries, his serve lost pace, weight and spin by early 1993. Just watch Agassi-Becker and then Agassi-Edberg in 1990 and see the difference.

So it helps that by the mid 90s , racquet technology became so powerful and full of spin that serve and volleyers were forced to hit dipping low balls that most s&v hit mainly half volleys that popped up allowing baseliners to slap forehand winners from anywhere on court. The racquet technology made playing the net more and more difficult and it got worse for volleyers as each year passed

I am from latín América, we had many champions in Washington, and the tournament has it's fandom here, second to the Us Open only, though you may not believe that, but it's true. Final ever took place in 1995. Now that is some truly baffling science. The literature on this one must be ultra-sophisticated With exponentially increasing emissions, the 2016 Paris Agreement, and the ATP's commitment to become carbon neutral by 2050, one can only imagine how the hottest finals on record took place in the 1990s.
