As a Lendl fan I genuinely hated Boris but I have to say he was so damn good! Luckily genetics (or God if you trust one) didn't gifted him with fast legs otherwise there would had been no competition for a decade. Nobody has (or has ever had) that combination of power, net play ability and mental strength (watch this tie break, he didn't commit a single error).

One of the greatest ever. He played in the most difficult era of all time, most competitive era 1985-1991 - Lendl, Edberg, Wilander, Cash, Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, still good Connors... Becker could have easily won more in his prime if there was no competition, he was past his peak when Sampras and Agassi peaked after '91

No matter if like past tennis or today's you have to admit in the past you saw variety of players. Agassi was totally different vs Becker was different vs McEnroe. You could put a bag on a player's face and I could tell you who is the player. Unlike today, same serve, same double backhand. No idea how to volley, or hit a smash.

During 1992, Becker brought home seven titles, but in 1993, his personal life took a turn, and after a surprising marriage and a number of tax issues, Becker entered into a mid-career slump. He was able to recover from this by 1995, and once again found himself at Wimbledon. This time, however, though he beat Andre Agassi, he lost to Pete Sampras.However, Becker did win the ATP Tour World Championships against Michael Chang. Though the end of the 1990s was rocky for Becker, his colleagues greatly respected him, and even his rival, Sampras, said that Becker was the best player he had ever played. Throughout his career, Becker played best on indoor carpet and grass courts, and never won a tournament on a clay court.

His movement around the court was his major weakness! The Wimbledon Final loss against Pete Sampras in 1995, saw his legs go to jelly after he narrowly won the first set, he admitted it as such! His amazing semi-final victory over Andre Agassi, saw him burn excess fuel, so it's a shame that he wasn't able to improve on that aspect of his game, as he certainly had the talent to have won more Grand Slam Titles!

He retired from tennis in 1999, at just 31 years of age as well, which by today's standards is quite young, he peaked very early in his career which probably explains to a certain degree why he came to that decision! He certainly didn't have the longevity of Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic or Rafa Nadal!

Becker was unfortnatly not so consistent thru his carrier like Agassi,Sampras and the big 3 but on the other hand i think his achievements before he got 20 years will be very difficult to top in the future.

Contrary to popular belief the transition to serve + big baseline hitting had already started in the 90s. Edberg hit his peak and his highest tennis level in 1991 but that was effectively the end of pure serve volley artistry. Becker's game (and Lendl too) were really the blue print for the modern power game. Sampras, stich, krajicek, Ivanisevic were all huge servers and had powerful groundstrokes/ great returns. They had complete all court games and part of the evolution that led to players like Roger and Wawrinka. Becker stayed relevant in 1995-96 and won the 1996 AO because of his baseline game, not just serve volley though he was a better volleyer than most. Watch the low FH volley starting at 2:18

this indoor greenset surface played medium (1994) to medium fast but it was fair surface for all styles of play though it rewarded attacking players. i hate the molasses slow indoor hardcourts today though to be fair the indoor speed of the ATP finals in Turin has been sped up the past two years

This match was 92. Indoor surfaces i would say were mostly fast surface, the court they played this match on was very fast. Definitely serve volleyers like Becker, Sampras and Edberg loved this kind of surface

Boris was pure alpha male. Despite the exaggerated rock and hip rotation, technically his serve, toss and wrist probation was perfection. Too bad that off court issues distracted his peak years but the game also changed dramatically with racquets and court speeds in the 90s and he was still relevant in the mid nineties. It was so to become the era of the taller big servers like Stich, Krajicek, Sampras and others. Goran was just all time fave. Did you recognize that a 32 year old Becker has beaten Kiefer in 1999 after Kiefer won Halle? And thereafter Hewitt. And later, Hewitt won Wimbledon. Hewitt had never won Wimbledon in the nineties!
