There is a bluray of the uncut opera in French which was performed at the Rossini Opera Festival in 2013, where JDF is a few years older than in the rendition you have picked here. Clearly this one for me! My most watched/ listened-to scene in the opera, along with the aria that follows.

Gregory Kunde's 1995 live Pesaro version is much better tough he didn't sing last C (it's not written in tge score). But he performed the whole opera with no cuts. Almost 5,5 hour of music. Michael Spyers did the same at Bad Wildbad festival in 2013.

I guess I’ll be the odd man out and claim Spyers as the “best” of the modern recordings. His technique is immaculate. Gedda had a great voice, but his technique is kind of all over the place. As others have stated, Pavarotti is in a class of his own. I love Florez, but his voice is too small for this role.

Kim is very good but let’s not exaggerate! There’s Gedda, there’s Pavarotti. Kim’s voice is still too young. Besides, today’s conductors tend to conduct music too fast not allowing enough room for singers either for proper sound production or for interpretation. That’s another element today’s younger singers suffer from.

Gedda sang this difficult role live, but Pavarotti never tried to do it. The Scala offered him to sing Guillaume Tell, but he refused. I think the tessitura was too high for him. As Michael Haas said to Gramophone, the complete opera with Chailly was something that could only be achieved on studio: "Every ensemble, according to Pavarotti, was a tenor aria with everyone else an obbligato in the background.", and he harassed the producer.

Because he uses his muscles to hold the sound, and that's a very hard muscular effort. Try to take a deep breath, tighten your abdominal muscles and hold it for as long as you feel it. To sing high C, you need to create enough air pressure to make your vocal cords vibrate. Opera singing is a huge work of the abdominal and back muscles. It's a controlled, aesthetic scream.

In particular: in all of Corelli's video recordings before the '70s, as well as whenever I had the chance to listen to him and see him perform live, Corelli, a true artist, did not tremble or exhibit any muscular constriction in any part of his body. In general, a genuine opera singer, whether a tenor, baritone, or soprano, should not tense or contract any part of their body, as doing so would result in the closing of the throat and a voice resembling that of a castrated rooster, similar to that of Mr. Spyres.
