kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZmUlayZn62Ggpo,374s Ok, I'm gonna go on a bit of a tangent here. First of all, that entry said "Praline and Araline [citation needed]", not "Plalin and Alalin [citation needed". We still don't know where those original names came from. Did they come from a different source? Were they just placeholder names? Did those names come from a cat stepping on the writer of that article's keyboard? Am I digging too deep into things?

"because people keep unsubscribing" I wish that weren't the case, bc these toki pona translations of songs I've never heard of are really cool and it's a way to learn by immersion while also finding cool new music. Also 90% of these lines hit really close for me, I love how Toki Pona's vagueness almost lets you describe some things with MORE specificity. (for example, "sina suli e musi" - "you increase/make bigger the fun [sic]" is an idea I inherently understand even if there's not a direct way to say it in most natlangs)

I found the thing about the gender interpretation/reading being intentional in this translation really interesting because like, it feels almost like an explicit admission of the subjectivity in the translation But thinking about it more, *every* song translation necessarily depends on however the translator decides to interpret the lyrics of the song, since a perfect, one-to-one translation which fits the melody and meter of the song and also miraculously has the exact same implications and themes and interpretations seems literally impossible? So like, probably best not to value “objectivity” in reference to translation (or even in reference to pieces of media in general) Anyway I realize what I just said wasn’t really about the translation itself other than as a jumping off point to my own train of thought, so here’s another thought I had while watching this: I think I’ve still yet to get the hang of the vagueness in toki pona. There was one moment in this video where there were a ton of ways to interpret “lukin”, but yesterday when I was reading through the lyrics it’d only occurred to me to interpret it as just meaning “see” in a completely literal sense with the possibility of other meanings not even occurring to me at all! So it was nice to have that sort of reminder that toki pona words are a lot broader in terms of meaning than what might occur to me at first glance! --- I completely understand if you decide it’d be best for the channel not to do more analyses for this album’s songs, but I just wanted to voice my appreciation for them! They’ve been so helpful in terms of motivating me to try and learn toki pona and to someday try translating songs myself, and it’s always so cool getting to see them and get a glimpse at some of the thoughts that went into making them! (I think I said something similar to that last bit on the moku Sutolokanopu video yesterday, but it’s still true lol) If you decide to keep doing more of these videos for songs from this album, I’d love to see one for tomo Napisa! The Vötgil caught me so off guard the first time (part of my brain was convinced it was English and it took until partway through my second listen to realize what it probably was lol) and I’d love to know what those lyrics meant! (Just occurred to me I wrote like 3 separate comments and just stitched them together into one lmao) (Edit: okay one last thing because I forgot to mention it, I just wanted to appreciate the gendery stuff and the fact that that was intentionally baked into this translation! I’d say it comes at a particularly gendery period in my life but let’s be honest, I’ve had no shortage of gendery times and I almost certainly will continue to moving forwards, but either way I really enjoyed it :D )

@@StarryDragonKitten I'm not yet at a point where I can understand Toki Pona sentences without translating them into English. I read this as "In the light, you [will] see yourself and recognize your goodness." Very good. That conveys the intended sentiment excellently, I think :)

Damn, the song is right. Part of me feels like I should've heard this 2 years ago, but I don't think I'd have believed it. There's something overwhelming in going from avoiding mirrors like the plague to feeling that rush of euphoria every time you come across one. When you look at yourself and see you're beautiful. Watching my dreams become reality is the best part of transitioning for me 💖🏳️‍⚧️

in my view, the only real interpretation of this song other than “it’s about being trans” is “it’s about being lesbian”. everything else kinda works but those two are the ones that are closest. it’s amazing because i’m fairly certain both are unintentional.
