One of the things that sets your vids above the rest is the amount of practical uses those techniques have in real life. At the end of the day, we live in a society where the likelihood of needing skills like these become more and more important each day.

Great video. I'm practicioner of Yoseikan Aikido, a style that has this same mentality, as you Tenshin. Aikido needs to be fast, explosive and efective. There are sooooooo many people that say that Aikido is not legit as a martial art....It's so exasperating. Let's do our best for Aikido, let's show the world that our Martial Art can evolve and adapt to any situation!

I was already an experienced street fighter (defender) in the early 90s, when I started training aikido. I started incorporating Aikido into my stuff, within 3 months of my start date. I kept living in that neighborhood for another 2 years, so I've got LOTS of experience using basic Aikido in fights and I know how to make it work. All that being said, you are the ONLY guy I've ever seen, who also understands the dynamics of what it takes to make Aikido work in real fight situations. I too used hand deflections, but learned them as blocks and parries while studying karate as a kid. They turned into deflections when I did them in rapid succession, in the midst of real fights. I called it "Tap - Tap - Boom!" In most of my street fights I was being attacked by 2 or more guys, so the combination of tap tap boom and body movements of aikido were perfect for setting guys up and knocking them down. What you do looks like a more refined version of what I used to do. The shit works!

Great video as always, I remember executing the same technique many years ago and an aikidoist approached and told me that's not aikido. So I had to explain to him when you receive a street attack , the attacker retracts his hand quickly and it is imperative to deflect and enter in offline with "Kakusaretah" hand that the attacker never sees. Thank you for the video.

Come on Lenny set up aikido kumite championship, link up with aikidokas that have blackbelt in judo and bjj as well as aikido, go through rules and lets get ready to rumbleeeee In every martial art or fighting system there's kata, kihon and kumite, form/technique, drill and sparring. It would be epic to see a championship with tenshin aikido be set up, principles 1. Don't talk about tenshin 2. Don't get grabbed 3. Don't get punched 4. Don't get put the ground Allowed Gi grabs and body (except the lawsuit areas) Punches (sumo slaps and pushes and maybe discuss neck chops if we amp up the level) Just look at tomiki aikido and maybe amp up the level and finetune the rules based on aikido principles, their toshu randori seems like a good base to make it sport

I have one effective variant of iriminage based on against boxer's guard when in close range against opposite stance. Your Backhand forearm brigde opponent's lead hand, your leadhand cup the neck or backhead of opponent, you pull opponent's head in as you slide step to the side with iriminage (if backleg pointing 6 a clock then switch stance and having backleg point 3 a clock. Very effective, you chose the initiative instead of waiting for punches. Practice both sides so you can just switch stance

Another great video. I love how you stressed practicing the parts of this deflection combination. Repetition at controlled speed helps build muscle memory and overall speed. When you are demonstrating at speed it's hard to REALLY see what your doing, the angles of your deflections and the timing so this is really a great video breaking it down. Lenny, I do have a question...As you're starting the Kiriage deflection it APPEARS that you are drawing your weight back a little to absorb and adjust distance relative to the speed of the attack....do you teach that or are you doing it out of a sense of feel/speed that your are dealing with?

very, very good technique ... especially when most of the weight is on the right leg ... I'm nobody ... but I have a request ... try almost the same, but grip / hit with your right hand as a counterattack at the same time as the attack from the inside, i.e. right from the right side of the attacking hand, left hand as a belay (with time you can risk without left hand as a belay, but if the opponent knows how to quickly change the attack it will be an elbow) - if the counterattack will be at exactly the same time, then he will not be able to stop the counterattack (he would have to stop the attack which would be much weaker resulting from reading the position) ... ai - attack acceptance (no fear) ki - force resulting from position (physics, biomechanics) do - defense method, the best defense is attack (counterattack) sorry for my english...

Sensei,with all due respect. The hand movement is fine. You should constantly be thinking Irimi if your going for this.(Get in,or lead out.) In my personal experience in using Aikido in the real world,all fist fights,people drunk armed dangerous etc. Go in. It takes an expert to in fight. In your video your timing is off. You should be going in when he thinks about moving. I cannot stress old style Ki training enough. Watch your video again you'll see your distancing on Uke. I really want to see aikido in sport competition and I've been thinking about the rules. What would your set of rules be? Here are some thoughts of mine which will mainly focus on the aspect of aiki grappling because once we sorted out this mess it won't be that hard to clinch a boxer and jam his punches and then apply aiki. Strikes: sumo slaps, neck chop, pushes all allowed, no eye gouge or groin strikes or close fist. No kicks just sweeps and foot pins and pushes. Fingerlocks are allowed but no throws just pinning to tap out. Jointlock throws need to be examined which are allowed otherwise pinning to tap out will be objective for those extreme throws. Gripping gi is allowed. Falling to ground will be based on which position they end up if person cannot deliver a submission within 5-10 seconds. Win by KO, tap or decision. Techniques may be used from sumo wrestling, daito aikijitsu, aikido and judo as well wrestling. Main objective is to get stand up submission or aiki wrestling from knees. I got more ideas but this will be from now. Could you set up an aiki wrestling league? That would be epic

I like this idea. but like boxing, distance is everything. If I'm Joe Haymaker with a lead Cross and over stepping sure. But If I box you are never getting to my hip. I think this is why Aikido loses favor in real fights. People have to commit to much. A balanced fighter is going to keep balance always. They are not going to throw a cross and switch lead legs. They will throw that shit and step back now you're Fucked. Not Knocking, just saying it's low % shot
@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS133 жыл бұрын
Ok a low % shot for the average person. I am far from an average person. And only reason you can critique this is because.... You just watched the video and you think you know. Here’s the thing you’ll never see this coming. Within the moment of the moment you’ll never be able to read what am I going to do next?. Aikido has infinite ways with dealing with situations. To be able to do that you gotta be fucking breathtakingly good and what I’ve seen has been rare. Personally... I’ve been able to do this because I’m not the average person and I’m not in the category of some aikido shihan (master). I’m in a league of my own. Look around! lol at other aikido channels. NO ONE is doing aikido like I do. They can’t! They all think this love peace and harmony shit, it makes me sick. My mindset is of a combative nature. I think very tactically and I’m a quick problem solver. I know you’re not knocking, just saying bro. Low % shot for an average person.

@@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13 I've been in real fights, seen shit go a thousand miles an hour. Played football as a O line D line in college, seen people move at light speed. Almost broke my neck and busted my knees. I've Spent 5 days in the hospital after being shot at and jumped by 6 dudes that had their shit together. At 6'5 260 of power and aggression it did not help. You come at me with that Aikido neck tie and I'm breaking your shit. What I mean humble and honesty is it is unlikely to catch a person unless they are drunk, stupid or shitting themselves. It would be safer with a duck under and single leg or standing triangle if they are dumb enough to give me that much space. Game over at that point, cause you know they suck. After all that, I think Aikido has been under valued but you need to been realistic about what can been taken from the art practically. Fighting is about minimize risk and eliminating the threat.
@justinwallace2693 жыл бұрын
I dunno, man, even the best strikers on the planet have had their defenses bypassed by wrestlers, Judoka, and BJJ practitioners. Tenshin Aikido isn't all that different and can mount a pretty effective offense when they slip in close. Most fight situations don't always provide the luxury of picture perfect defensive boxing strategy either. Additionally, that's not what these deflections are meant to address in the first place. It's clearly geared toward aggressive attackers, which most nutjobs jumping you on the street are. Even the UFC has its share of aggressive, sloppy punchers. About having size and power on your side, just remember; there's always a bigger fish so it pays to keep an open mind about different techniques.

Well, my dear friend, it happens that there are things that should not be within everyone's reach, as is right.
