As someone who is in very similar circumstances with Estee I could relate so much with her struggles especially when she questioned if she was actually good at anything. Really hope that the people around her are supportive and that she continues to try, sometimes that all we can do. So much love and respect for the team :)

Hey Estee, not sure if you'd see this comment, but just wanted to share some heart as someone also just starting to work in the youth/care industry. One thing I've learnt from the job so far, in comparison to life as a student is this: As a student, we worked to make every effort count, and we aim to maximise the effect of every minute of our work/studying, to make the least mistakes to we can inch our closest to 100%. This stress/hope/expectation si highly effective as a student-when our grades are highly within our control, but not exactly so when working with people. But here, as a working adult working with people (or youths), it would be more wise to maximise our longevity in the career (pretty much the rest of our lives), and to sow when the opportunity arises. In exams, it is possible to get 100%, but in life, there is never 100%, there is always better (so no point chasing perfection/maximising effectiveness, because that is non-existent anyway) - much wiser to do what we can where we are and leave some fires to burn out themselves. Blessings :)

He is just a toxic boy that nobody loves. THat's why he's acting like that as if he is all tough. He don't deserve to be in this =dreams as he will just ruin the environment. Let him fail in life and nobody will love him. Let the others grow better without such a toxic individual. Giving him this opportuntiy but he still act like he is funny but in fact he's just a clown that nobody loves to be around.

True, his ego will get him in trouble one day in the future cause I met a lot of egotistic people in my life and l hate this kind of people always think highly of themselves and always think they are better than others but I always tell them that there is someone better than you so always be humble cause humility goes the long way in life. He has an attitude problem and anger issues, i used to have especially my anger issues and always get me in trouble and but now I know how to control and when people do something that pisses me off I just ignore them and laugh at them bcs their actions make them like a clown. 😂 He wants to become a chief he must change and take criticism to heart bcs being a good chief must take criticism regardless of good/bad, if good take it with a humble heart if bad take it with a learning attitude and try how not to make the same mistake and try how to improve the dishes by cooking it and tasting it a few times see what can add on and remove to make the dishes taste better than before, like those world famous chief, Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Olivier i bet they get scolded by their snr and being criticism by customers when they just started and through that they learned and create more dishes and learn more new dishes till they gain experience and now they become world famous chief. We are our chief in our life to make our life better and able to inspire others we must learn from our mistakes, take good/bad criticism and be humble through our learning experience in life we change and people will see the change in us.

There are a few comments about how to deal with Nick, with most bearing petty harshness with suggestions to 'break' him out of his current attitude. If you have observed him closely, when sharing his thoughts and the conversations he's had, Nick is a stinging onion with many layers built up as his defense. The approach towards him is to break down these layers bit by bit, not through harshness but with empathy and reassurance that they have gotten his back. He is a very vulnerable boy with low self-esteem, probably a result of the environment he grew up in. I hear him when he said that respect is mutual - that itself is a clue on how he has to be handled, he has to be reasoned with and clear explanations has to be given on why certain behaviours of his is anti-social and teach him how else can one approach a situation differently. Talking down will not break his walls, he will reinforce it further. Nick just needs to learn to be less anti-social and it's ok to be empathetic instead of having that tough stance all the time, that this centre is a place for him to let his guard down, release the angst and the many layers of negative defense mechanism he has built up and to believe in himself. Nick needs extra reminders that he can do it and there's a beautiful soul within that's screaming for assurance and guidance. Nick needs a big hug.

CNA should filter comments on videos with kids who are still young and developing mentally. Especially when they are on programs as such where mentality towards it is direly important. Some of these comments could be perceived negatively when the kids read them which will affect their attitude/behaviour in this program.

No comments about the kids - a mix of nature and nature, and we can easily see ourselves on the same path had we experienced the same. My problem is with Stanley - what exactly is his vision? He makes odd comments that kids don't need counselors, they don't need quantity time, just need to meet their idols etc. But for kids, quantity time is quality time. Most kids never see their idols/find non-idol related reasons to grow. Not sure how your owner can parrot such simplistic, unfounded claims that's not backed by evidence. That's probably why the staff are finding hard as well. What exactly is his goal, for the kids to succeed in a "meritocratic" society? Or to prevent them from getting into prison as he says at the end?

Sometimes, there is a lot of pressure build up inside the program officer / facilitators, these are the kind of emotions they really can't show openly towards the kids. They are human after all. Imagine, if the program officers or facilitators show a moment of vulnerability ( ie breakdown ) towards these kids, they might be taken advantage of.

I find the roles all of the staff have very demanding. The pressure and skills needed to help these young people from poor backgrounds develop feelings of strong self worth takes special people to work in this environment. I'm not surprised if all staff feel inadequate keeping in mind this is a brand new school that is still finding it's way.

It's interesting to see the counselors strategy. As an educator, the rule is to be strict on the very first day. Because students will test your boundaries. That doesn't mean you can't be fun and nice. You can be their mentor and teacher but not their friend. You have to call them out when they are doing something wrong. And encourage them when they do something right. Students need to be held accountable and responsible for their actions and words.

what I did with my kids were, giving them a warning before receiving the consequences of their action. Basically, kids need structure. My son likes to play video games and he would find a way to play it after we sleep. As he was already warned of the consequences, when we took action, he knows that he had lost our trust, and he knew that he is wrong. Another example is when we gave him his own iphone, we set the rules of do's and don'ts and also informed him of what will happened if he goes against the rule. And at the same time, he is allowed to say or give opinion - like a discussion in agreement of the terms we agreed upon. This help in their personal development. This also help his younger sibling to understand what is expected in the future.

Dare to dream... but I can see most of the kids have no dream. All they want to do is having fun away from their parents,. after watching this these program may lose more donor or fundings. Most of these kids has no interest in improving their study. Their placement should be reviewed every half yearly and made them known that they can lose their placement at school. The teachers are too soft, letting the kids talk over them. Molly coddling them and pitying them due to their circumstances won't help with their character building. It is so exasperating to watch this show! Rayyan deserve to stay. Nick should be expelled instead of suspended.

That one malay assistant discipline master talks in such a negative way! Yelling at the children and saying "It's YOUR fault if the fan breaks cause you dont listen to me", and smiling when a child told him that their cat died and his response is "It's just a cat. " ??? Why don't they vet the adults in this facility. Some of them are perpetuating the exact cycle that they are supposedly trying to break.
@johnwig285

Maybe they need to vet you instead. Your soft approach will get you stomped on lah. Ppl like Felany are the reason why there is some order. I can't believe you are that soft to consider speaking loudly as yelling. He also attempted to comfort Rayyan by saying that. You're a typical SJW who no action talk only acting like you can do better than him. Sign up then talk.
@daphnnetan
@daphnnetan 8 ай бұрын
I guess that might not be the best way to speak according to us who are watching online but to handle a group of teenagers who highly wouldn’t sitting down quietly and listen to instruction, sometimes being firm has to be the way. They are in the big hall with so many children talking at the same time, the instructor might has to yell. End of the day, it’s not for us to judge the action of the instructors at that 1 min of action. They are with the children 24 hrs, even parents shouted at their own children at home. Instructors have room to improve to communicate more effectively. While I feel very much for the children but I also empathise the discipline master. The facility is not a place of perfection.

Estee gotta stop being so hard on herself. You can only help those who want to help themselves. I was a student mentor (providing free tution) previously for many years, and it was really difficult mentoring those who aren't motivated to study themselves, there's so much I can do. So now, I only focus on those like Johnny. People, including these teenagers, will have to face the consequences for their actions later on, and we are nobody to force them to do what we want them to even knowing that it is wrong. The best thing you can do for these people is only encourage and provide them with the reason they should make certain correct decisions, and if they don't they have to face whatever that comes. You are not God. Gives off 1w9 vibes.
