Hello hello, I hope you enjoyed the video and the thoughts on this little gem I wanted to share AND the lovely Ghibli clouds I was treated to by the weather :o Also much love to Squarespace again for sponsoring the video! Head to www.squarespace.com/teocrawford to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code "TEOCRAWFORD". Have a great week, Teo P.S I've noticed that the price for this camera seems to vary quite a lot across the globe. For reference, I often find this camera body in the 400€ range, which in my eyes is a good deal - I hope that clarifies a couple questions :)

I got my gx85 as a travel filmmaking camera about two years ago, and it's been an absolute joy to use. I love taking it on hikes and just getting nice shots. It sits right next to me on my desk just so I feel the urge to pick it up. I have a full cinema camera kit, but I still find myself reaching for it because I love its size and its limitations. I've shot multiple short films on it now, and the look has never disappointed me. It really is a perfect second camera.

I love that you use Dehancer to make your videos look more like film. I hope this becomes a trend on KZbin. I'm tired of the crisp and cold digital look modern camera sensors are giving us nowadays, especially if the footage is shot with a smartphone, which automatically processes the footage so heavily to look as real to life as possible-I don't understand people who like that look. No, I want footage to look like a nice memory. And your videos do that for me.

You were a big part of me deciding to get this exact set-up and I never regretted it. Such a special combo. And it clearly inspires you because your photos with it are some of your best work imo. The big companies don't want people to know it but no, you don't need the latest gear to enjoy photography. In the contrary I would say. I have been shooting with a Nikon D60 and a 35mm 1.8 and I don't even know how old it is but if I didn't like cameras as much as I like ohitography I could very well just shoot with this combo or the GX80/20mm1.7 and be perfectly happy. Btw, if you use lightroom I highly encourage you to use the new denoise funstion. It's ofc not perfect but it makes photos that would have been unusable at high iso completely clean and even printable. There is no more excuse now to not use old gear (if you use lightroom).

Everything about this video is how i've been feeling for a long time. After many years and many test trials with digicams and even the x100 i finally found the camera sparks that joy and gives me that ease of use and burden-less feeling. I found a deal on the "old" sony rx1rii and that camera has completely resparked my love for photography. I use to shoot a lot with point and shoot film cameras, i would use them as my everyday carry whether i was going out with friends/family or on my commute to work, i would always make sure it would come with me. i would even make room for it in my camera bag on trips or my paid gigs. current film prices had got me looking more into digital point and shoots and long story short i ended up with the rx1rii and now my bigger sony has taken the back seat. its so nice to come across video that really goes into depth explaining that feeling ive been personally experiencing. this has definitely become one of my favorite videos here on youtube that ive watched in a long time, i couldve easily watched this video front to back 10+ times even if it was hours long. so yeah thank you for that :)

You were partly what inspired me to get a GX85! Love your photos and how you can turn something seemingly mundane into something beautiful. Been a photographer for going on 10 years and was a micro four thirds guy for a while and sold everything for full frame when I started leaning heavier into video. I realized very quickly I didn't like the weight of the bodies or lenses when going on personal trips or for EDC. Also found out there was nothing "magical" or "unobtainable" with full frame. Yes shallow dof, blah blah; but a photo is so much more than blurry background. So I decided to go back to this exact setup, GX85+20mm f1.7. I told myself I would by a 12mm or a 15mm at some point but I absolutely love the 20mm, it never comes off. I still have my full frame Panasonic cameras for work but when it's just me and I want something light to throw in my pocket or a small sling pouch, it's the GX85 that comes with me.

Congratulations on your 1st digital camera. Be careful. This could be your gateway drug into photography. Word of advice. Newer, better, more expensive cameras won’t make you a better photographer. I know this through experience. Use the gear you have. Purchase primes if and when you need them. YT videos will help you become a better photographer. Books, as in how to or of images by photographers you like , will help you become a better photographer. Going to workshops or taking classes are also helpful. Your gear, especially your body, is the least import element of becoming a good photographer. The most important piece of gear you will ever have is about six inches behind your camera. I'd like to point out that in the last decade or so progress on the digital camera front wasn't made by such huge leaps as it was earlier, meaning a person trying out photography can rely on older second hand models to cover 90% of their needs. Sure higher MP and ISO numbers are great but even having a camera that gives you usable 800ISO is just lovely. And I'd really like to be a guy starting out in this era. Congrats on making it so easy to understand for everyone!

You're one of the reasons why I bought this as my compact travel camera. I remember watching your early videos and being stunned by the quality of photos this camera took and for how cheap it was for me to get. I have it paired with the 25mm 1.4 PanaLeica lens and its one of my most favorite combos out of all the cameras/lenses I've owned and it made shooting photos fun again. Also the 16MP isn't an issue for large prints since Lightroom has an AI upscaler and all large photos I printed from the files of this camera came out stunning. I'm glad to see this camera getting more recognition and it saved my back from traveling with Full Frame cameras like my S1H. Thanks for all your work

I've been using mine for almost two years now. I work between the kit lenses (12-35mm, 45-150mm), the 25mm f/1.7 (debated the 20mm but I prefer tighter compositions), and some Canon FD mount adapted lenses. In a commercial sense, I'm outgrowing it. I won't charge people to take photos for them due to my hardware not being up to the task. But as an art, I adore using this camera. If I feel like my motivation for photography is waining, I'll end up picking it up and it comes right back.

I feel validated. The camera I've become attached to is a couple of years older than yours-it's a Pentax K-S1. I think it might be the most compact DSLR that Pentax produced, and just slightly bigger than your Lumix. It puts out 20MP, which is more than enough for anything I do, and it's a great match with those tiny Pentax-DA Limited series lenses. To me the key advantage is its bright-and-beautiful pentaprism viewfinder. It's much more pleasing to use than a typical EVF, especially on sunny days.

It's small, inconspicuous, light and can be stashed in a bag or large jacket pocket when necessary. The mechanical shutter has a very soft but crisp sound, and it has the option for an electronic shutter, too. In body stabilization, 4k video, lovely colours, what's not to like?

Brilliant video Teo! Having that type of camera is such a joy. My Pentax Mx-1 is one of those cameras, It feel is great in the hand, has a great zoom range and just a joy to work with. No fussing with lens or having to carry a bag of lens. Thanks for sharing! Always great content!

small quick digital cameras are so special. My first camera was a Fujifilm FinepixS2750 that I got as a hand me down when my grandparent's house burnt down. I'm not kidding my first camera survived a house fire. it's got 12 mega pixels and is from 2010 I think, considering when I recharge the batteries I have to reset the date and it automatically assumes 2010. Apart from the way I got it I don't know who used it before or what it was used to capture, I wish I did know though tbh I was never that close to my grandparent's on that side of the family, I'm glad I can give this little camera some new life though even if it is just to shoot candid photos with my friends. It's not the best camera for size/weight but I never leave the house without it, it just feels so special when I hold it.

absolutely stunning video. I dont even need a camera, I watched this for the visuals and the commentary. How you feel about the GX85 is how I feel about the Leica M9 or the xpro1--it's inspiring to grab and walk around. I completely agree that most new digital cameras are completely unnecessary--huge, bulky, 50mp +, spray and pray--there is nothing that motivates you to challenge yourself to be more creative: the paradox of ease.

This ties in perfectly with the intuitive 'active filter' hypothesis, it is many times easier to learn things when you are enjoying it than when you aren't. If you want to get good at 'active' art like drawing or painting, you will get better if you actually do what you like since you will pay attention to what you are doing and do it more. Same with language learning and photography, which are more 'passive', pay attention and do it often and you will get results.

I feel the same about the gx80. I don't know what it is, but this camera inspires me to go out and take pictures. It's about the process of taking them and capture memories...and not about pixels and perfection. I always loved the idea of dealing with limitations. I would love to upgrade to the gx9 for the exposure compensation dial... because the rear dial on my gx80 has stopped working. And it's my 2nd one because of this. 😅

With regards to your point on the super high ISO capability at 9:59; that high ISO isn't really useful for single shots, but if you're stacking shots using median blending in post, then you can get the benefits of higher shutter speed in low light while keeping low noise. It's the same technique many smartphones use to achieve such low noise in their night modes.

I had this camera before it was stolen. I replaced it with a GX9. I have no problem shooting at 800iso. No worries, of course, I don't pixel peep nor do I print. I think that if you have to look for noise, you're always going to find it. So, I don't look, just enjoy.

Still used my two GX9 even after 4 years of purchase and going around the world. IBIS and fun factor of GX80 is still better than most of 2023 cameras available today.

I love my GX80. It's very versatile because of its size, but also produces great images. Paired with the Panasonic-Leica 15mm lens it's hard to beat. I also love the Panasonic GM1 with the same lens, that is such a fun combination.
