Was absolutely dreading having to "gut it like a fish" in order to get the carb off and clean the main jet and emulsion tube just as I have done on SO many motorcycle carbs. Remembered seeing the plastic idle screw on mine and wondered if I had the same pilot jet underneath. Sure enough! Had it out in a few minutes, and, sure enough IT WAS TOTALLY CLOGGED! Couple minutes later I had it back together, fired it up and runs like new! A BIG thank-you for saving me so much time and needless effort!!

Hi, our generator just started surging like crazy. Randomly, barely anything drawing from it. We’re in wildfire country, they did a power shut off for fire safety . So out of the blue, we needed the generator. My other half isn’t here right now, I’m no mechanic. I’m kind of freaking out with the surging, it’s 10 pm and the power is still shut off. My hubby can’t get here until Thursday, the power is supposed to be turned back on tomorrow night by 7pm 🙏. So I’m going to show him your video, hope that is the only reason it’s surging. I’m just praying it stays on all night, daytime not so bad. But night time not so good, especially when you live in the boonies. I doubt you’ll read this tonight, so all I can do is ride it out. I just hope nothing bad happens overnight, or hurts the engine in any way 🙏. Thank you for making this video, I’ll be very curious to see if it fixes the surging. 😊

If it has a eco mode, turn it off see if that helps for now. You may have some water in the carb as well that might get pulled through and clear up. Make sure there is fresh gas in it and dump a bottle of sea foam in it until he gets back. Good luck and hope your power comes back on soon.

Tepco Cycle Repair , has fresh gas in it. Where would I get sea foam ? Never heard of it, something else I’m noticing this morning. It has not surged in the last hour at all, other issue. My son lives in a travel trailer which he plugs into and outlet in our pumphouse to get power too, he says he only uses it for light. But now I wonder because it has not done it yet today, and I kn he’s sleeping. So could the trailer cause it ? I don’t kn if it’s just lights being used, sure is odd how it’s not doing it now. I’m making my other half take it in for a service either way, I don’t need it to screw up when I have 3 ft of snow outside. I have no way to get heat, I kn my heater makes it surge. It’s central forced air heater, I wish I had a wood stove for heat. But that’s not an option right now. Anyway sorry for babbling on, thanks for your help. And again, where would I get sea foam just so I kn ? Thanks 😊🌸

Another potential cause is an air leak between the carb and the engine. I had this happen on a new Generac PM2200i. Fantastic video! Thank you! I just picked up an EU6500 with only 200 hours on it, and it ran great when I bought it last week. I don't know what changed, but when running it today, it starts and idles fine, with and without eco throttle on/off. It also ran well when running 2 space heaters. But running 1 space heater, with or without eco throttle, it was surging. It seems like no load is fine. 1/2 load is fine. But anything in the middle and it surges. I dropped the sediment bowl and it was perfect. Not a spec in it. I removed the carb and the bowl had some black specs in it. No varnish, just some fine specs of dirt. The main jet was frozen in place, to the point that I was starting to round-off the flat-head notch on it. So I left it in the carb, sprayed it with carb clean in and out, and reinstalled. The surging seemed to get a little better, but it's still there and comes and goes. I didn't try the pilot jet and will try that next. I really don't want to have to cut the tab on the air/fuel ratio screw, but I guess that may be next as well. The EU6500 has a very fancy carb with the dual motors on the top. I really don't want to mess with them, or a 100% teardown of the carb. I'll try the pilot jet next.... thanks for the great video!

I have a different style Honda carb. It is factory sealed, but still has a screw opening to the idle jet area. The carb I have is surging, while engine is running. I put carb on carb cleaner for over 12 hours to bot soften and loosen up any buildup inside the vents and center tube. I then both inserted a small wire down through the idle jet opening, and the wire went the jet hole for a length of over a inch, very freely. I put pressurized carb cleaner through the screw opening, and it comes ot inside the carb's venture area ( so that small vent is free and clear of any dirt blockage. Main fuel flow tube is like new, and clean (even all of it's small holes. Main jet is clean as a whistle, and jet hole is wide open. Now I have cleaned many a carb over the years, and never had trouble like this carb has. I even inserted a stiff nylon brush into the main fuel tube, right up to where it comes out into the venture. Everything is clean as anyone can get this carb. I have repeated this process 4 times now, and still I have surging, while engine is running. It seems as if the idle hole in the main fuel flow tube in the center of the carb is plugged, because the idle section doesn't seem to be getting any fuel through it, and this is causing the engine to surge while running. Is there any way I can open-up that vent hole in the main center tube to allow fuel to pass through once again? It's either that, or I need to buy a new carb. The issue seems to be, half way up the inside of the main center tube. I ordered a set of brass fiber bushes, that will fit into that main tube to see if I can free up that area, and allow the fuel to flow to the idle area. Any suggestions on how I can get the fuel to the idle jet, and beyond on this carb?
@waynedavies31853 жыл бұрын
... I might add.... Each time I opened and cleaned the carb (which was 4 times), the carb sat in Gunk carb cleaner for 12 hours each. Still there is blockage in the idle section causing surging. It's just now getting fuel in that area.
@TepcoCycleRepair3 жыл бұрын
The problem with these carbs is you can't adjust the idle mixture screw. If you could the surging would be easily fixed. My suggestion to you is to get a new pilot jet and replace it. Or get a new carb that you can adjust the mixture screw.
@waynedavies31853 жыл бұрын
@@TepcoCycleRepair ... Maybe it's time to replace the carb. I'm thinking maybe some grit has got caught, or wedged in that hole, and doesn't want to be removed, thus stopping the flow of needed fuel for idle section to work properly. It's worth a try in trying to save this carb, but the more I try, the less it seems it will come unplugged. Out of the many carbs I have cleaned over the years, this is my fist, that is plugged solid within the main center tube section. I did an older 4 hp snow-blower engine as well today, that also needed a good carb cleaning. That turned out just fine. Engine runs like a dream again. It's best to do some asking, and learn something new, but in this case, I think a new carb is the remedy.

Surging = Fuel Starvation, especially with less than half tank of fuel. A generator runs at high speeds all the time requiring the highest of volume of fuel in the line at all times. Generators are designed to be low profile and an inherent flaw is that the fuel tank is (TOO LOW) just slightly above the carb fuel inlet for gravity feed through a hose. At high speeds and especially with little fuel in the tank causes a weak flow to the fuel inlet causing starvation/surging. SOLUTION: I have a Honda GX-390 and have discovered that by raising the entire fuel tank by 8" gave me MUCH better fuel flow down to the carb and the surging went away even with almost no fuel left in the tank. You can definitely see the difference (before and after) with a see-thru clear fuel filter which should always be at least 1/2 full during operation on a high speed motor/generator. Another mistake I made was storing Ethanol fuel for more than one season in my shed. The stuff goes bad and causes havoc on small engines. Periodically check the color of the stored fuel in a glass jar. It should be clear. If it is golden/urine colored, DONT USE IT in a small engine.. Car engines don't seem to have a problem with the aged fuel. I had about 20 gallons of yellow colored fuel and added a few gallons at a time to an almost full tank of gas in my car and it burned it with no problem.

Cleaned out the pilot jet as well as Sonic cleaning all carb parts. Still surging, though not as bad. As far as the mixture screw? What's the advantage of breaking off the tab to make it turn a full turn as opposed to just ¼ turn as it's intended ..... ESPECIALLY considering some genset carbs have no mixture screw adjustment at all - just a plug. I have 2 carbs for our Honda eu6500is. One came plugged (not adjustable) & the other is ¼ turn adjustable. But since some are obviously not intended to be adjusted, how crucial could cleaning out that port really be. I could remove the permanent plug if it were to really help.

The advantage is that you can clean it out and have more adjustment. It will surge at low rpm if it has low compression or a bad valve as well.

I based this video on common overlook things that could cause surging. The tube you're talking about with the small holes is the emulsion tube the main jet usually has a much larger hole that I do see clogged at times but that usually completely stops it from running. I agree I should have at least mentioned it in this video. I do have several other videos covering the main jet and emultion tube. Thanks for the comment!

Can you install an in-line fuel filter and remove the in-tank filter? If so any recommended model?
@TepcoCycleRepair2 жыл бұрын
I don't like added in line filters, I've had them restrict fuel and cause running issues.

I had to take top fuel indicator off to fix float inside but when I screwed down indicator back on it seems to leak when moving around with full tank. Any recommendations on stopping gas from coming out around edges of the indicator?

If the rubber seal is dry or ripped, you can use something like a honda bond, or motoseal from permatex. Take it back out, clean and dry it good and apply as per the directions.

Can you put the part numbers for all of the fuel filters in the description? I'm looking online and there are a few options and some of them are really expensive so I don't know if they're the right ones or not. Great video.

At 9:02 I show the part number of the fuel valve with the filter. The tank filter alone is 16952-ZB4-005

@@TepcoCycleRepair You rock. I just took the carb apart for the first time and cleaned it out, but I still have a rough idle. I'm looking to do everything I can to try to smooth that out. Appreciate it!

Great video. I have about 6700 hours on my EU3000IS (4 years old, CARB model) . About 1200 hours ago, it started running a little rough when ECO mode was off. But, during the winter, I never run the AC, so it stayed on ECO. About 300 hours ago, it really started getting rough. I previously cleaned the carburetor, but decided it may just be getting old. Purchased a new one, adjusted the valves, oil, air filter, spark arrestor. It seems to run a little better when I adjust the idle screw at one speed, but as soon as the load changes, it gets rough again. Now even at idle in ECO, it's running rough. Surges a lot. Anyways, I guess I should try the tank filter. Do you just unscrew from under the tank, or does it just pull out? I don't want to break it... Thanks again. Do you have a patreon or PayPal? I'm curious if it's just at the end of its life and the internals need to be replaced..

When you unscrew the fuel valve at the bottom of the tank it just pulls out. I do have a patreon, just haven't launched it yet. Thanks for watching!

I have this SAME problem. I live off grid and eco mode would be nice to use because it saves so much gas. But it’s impossible to adjust because of the load changes.
@TepcoCycleRepair2 жыл бұрын
Get it adjusted in eco mode with no load. It should be fine everywhere else in the rpm range. Always start with a good carb clean and valve lash check if you're having issues.
@GeeCeeAte2 жыл бұрын
@@TepcoCycleRepair I dont think eco mode will work with my new inverter. When my batteries enter absorb charging mode it requires a heavier load. So the eco mode lags a little to long before it kicks on. Youll hear it rev up, but by that point my inverter already stopped the charging because it couldnt get the power fast enough. Then the inverter will stop the charging cycle, which in-turn unloads the generator. Then it restarts in bulk charging, and its a never ending cycle. maybe i could adjust the idle a little higher on the eco mode, never tried it yet. I think its just too much of a lag between calling for power, and revving up to that load.

Are the engines commercial/industrial grade is that why they are better than champion, generac, or Wan
@TepcoCycleRepair3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, I just think the quality of the components are better. Metals, electrics etc. I've worked on a bunch of all brands and metal quality differs greatly and because of that things wear quicker, corrode faster and rubbers dry out faster in the less expensive units.

Wait!...no micro drill bits and drills like donnyboy and taryl??? You obviously need to be educated on how to properly fix surging🤦♂️😆. Nice job. One of the better explanations I’ve seen on YT. You actually talk about the low speed mixture screw. Everyone else brings out the power tools and start augering jets! IDIOTS! Well it has been getting me a lot of rework business in my shop!😆
@TepcoCycleRepair4 жыл бұрын
Lol yeah drilling out jets is covering the issue. I always think of it like this, it ran good when new with the stock pilot jet, so now without intake or exhaust mods it's surging, why would you modify the pilot? Diagnose and fix the issue. Thanks for watching!

Did you need a new gasket after taking it off?
@TepcoCycleRepair2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the condition when taking it off. On the fuel valve definitely, where the carb mounted, I didn't it was good, any damage to it, replace it.
@Ryan_Sellers3 жыл бұрын
I have an unrelated question to this video. I just replaced the gas tank on my generator. When I filled it full of gas, all of the gas drained out of the upper carb drain hose. Do you know why this would be? I don't see an adjustment screw.
@TepcoCycleRepair3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it's overflowing and filling the carburetor with fuel so check your float needle and make sure it's cutting the fuel off when the bowl is full.

Hi, I got surging but no errors eu6500is How do know if surging is not bad inverter board versus carb ?
@TepcoCycleRepair3 жыл бұрын
I guess in that case, with no errors I would just clean the carb first, it's easy enough to eliminate from the equation after it's clean.
