Polaris 50 starter clutch Starter not working repair

If your starter is clicking like a dead battery, check this first! You can pull the starter and use a screwdriver to see if the gear turns, it will only turn one way. If it wont turn either way, this is the problem. Should be the same for many 50, 80 Taiwan , Polaris horizontal two stroke engines.

Thanks for the video. I'm not having the exact same problem. On my little cousin's the Kickstarter works but the starter didn't work. I put a new starter on it. It worked for a week and then sounded like the gear had lost its teeth. I figured it was garbage metal. I pulled the starter and it was fine. I opened everything up and it was spinning both of the starter gears, but they weren't engaging. I found that one of the little bearings in that one way clutch was messed up. It has one vertical and one horizontal. The one horizontal one with the spring behind it was wedged all the way in. I also found a small 1.4 flat piece of metal all mangled sitting in there, but i can't figure out what it's from. I don't see why just that one little bearing would make it not engage. Maybe i should just buy a new clutch piece (not sure what exactly that piece is called). Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi. I cut out last night and my bike doesn't start back up on the kickstart. It feels like there is no grip that's turning the engine. When I turn the pulley with my hand it just spins and doesn't grip onto anything to turn the motor. Any ideas as to what this would be? I dont think its the mechanism in the casing because the lever springs back up and it clean, it's just on the variation side that's not working properly.

Joshua James Cole if you're able to spin the motor by hand with no resistance, you might have blown it up. I would pull the head and cylinder off and take a look. See my other LT80 top end video, it's the same.

Hi, i have the same problem. The Atv went through the flood of 2016 and the last gear that you pulled off (the one that was seized) I can't get it off of my quad. I've tried everything i know from oil to wiggling, to prying, etc. So, I was wondering how you got it off, or what you think I could try to get mine off. Thanks!

Timothy Martinez the last gear that had the bearing in it will be tough to get off if it was rusted. I would spray the area where the bearings are with penetrating oil and let it soak. Then use a 90° tool to get behind it and wiggle it back and forth to get it off.

Timothy Martinez Maybe but its tight behind it so it might be tough to get the puller in there. You see in the video I had to wiggle it, that was because it needs to come off straight. If it gets crooked it will act like its stuck. You might also try some heat so it will expand slightly.

Have a similar issue with a '04 Predator 90. Try to start it the relay just buzzes and battery wires get hot as hell. Starter spins freely, battery is brand new and tests at almost 13V, and everything spins freely as it should, but when I try to start it the relay just buzzes. I'm at a standstill. Any ideas?

The relay might be bad. You have to check current flow when you hit the starter. Find the starter wire coming from the relay, hit the starter and see if you're getting voltage at the starter. If not, replace the relay. If it does, you either have a stuck starter or starter bendix like this video. Be sure your battery is good by checking voltage going to the relay when you hit the start button, it shouldn't drop much.

I have the same quad and i put new carb and run for a little the die Wont start again. Try to jumpstart and it cranck a couple times then nothing ? Should i check my connection the open

Check the carb jets, if it's a Polaris carb it should be right, if it's aftermarket you may have to reset it to work.

@@TepcoCycleRepair reset what and how? If an aftermarket carb i still have the original but my problem the starter its not cranking and it was running fine for like 10 minutes with the new carb then die

@@danyvecerra8712 reset the carb jets. If it's a aftermarket carb the jetting is basic and usually not set for your machine. You will have to start checking your spark plug and rejet the carb until the plug looks tan.

Hello everyone, here I am from France and I wanted to know someone could help me solve my electric start problem on my 2001 sportsman 90 quad? I contacted a lot of forums at home in France and no one can find a solution for me. This is my problem now, when I press the start switch, the starter will turn but the quad motor will not turn. I changed the relay contactor, the battery but nothing changes. I disassembled the crankcase or there is the clutch but I do not see anything special. The pinion which drives the assembly works well but it does not drive the clutch. Looks like the starter is spinning in the opposite direction ..... Can someone help me? Thanks in advance. Nicolas

hey My name is Lamont meet you up at Greg's shop (motoary) a couple times.. I have the same machine 09 model its blowing a fuse every time I try to start it do you think I could have the same issue

Possibly, you may have a bad wire in the starter harness grounding out. When you hit the starter it sends power through the line, grounding out shorting and blowing the fuse. Check all your wires for exposed areas.

i thought the yellow button was a hot start. its also a start button? and if it is, and not working the starter must be bad or it was disabled?

It's just a start button, these atv's don't have hot start buttons. If yours is not working, check all your connections first, then check if the starter is getting power when you hit the start button. If it is, pull up open, and clean the starter first.

It was still good, just a dust cover gasket really. I cut the center out so it wouldn't interfere with the belt, you can see the part I'm talking about when I remove the cover.
