An important plus about Tepoztlán not mentioned: There are no corporate businesses--no Starbucks or WalMart. It's all local and family run. But you can easily go to Cuernavaca for those. It is so refreshing not seeing those monstrous stores.

I was in Tepoztlan for a couple of days 34 years ago. It was a magical visit, hosted by a friend from Mexico City very familiar with the town. Then I was young, with big dreams and no money. Now I'm an old man, ready to settle down somewhere in Mexico. I've been to many places in Mexico over the years but I never returned to Tepoztlan. After watching your fabulous video, I think it's time to go back. Who knows?

Watching from Toronto, but we have a home in Tepoztlan (Barrio San Pedro). One thing to note is that there are many more neighbourhoods than could be shown in the video. There are 8 traditional barrios, plus several outlying colonias, and several more surrounding smaller towns and villages. Each barrio has its traditions and celebrations, which have been passed down through generations. Tepoztecos are very proud of their history and traditions. There are many ways this is manifested, from the Fiestas del Barrio (each barrio has its own date or dates for these traditional celebrations), parades, Carnaval with el Brinco de los Chinelos, El Reto del Tepozteco, the Posadas, Día de Muertos, etc etc. While tourists may come to see these celebrations, it’s important to remember they are not done “for” tourists, but are rather a very traditional and authentic expression of Tepoztlan’s history and traditions. Always remember to be respectful and considerate. Too often people from Mexico City come, especially the younger crowd, just looking to party hearty and get drunk. There is quite a lot of resentment towards this kind of attitude among the townspeople. But if you come with respect and genuine interest in the local “usos y costumbres” (traditions), you will be welcomed warmly.

I spent a week in Tepoztlan in April 2022 for a retreat, and just loved it. It's at the top of our list for retirement destinations in Mexico, partly for its proximity to CDMX, as my husband just adores the city! But we love rural life. While I was there we could not hike to the pyramid because of wildfire. Next time. I did do a temazcal while I was there and that was a wonderful experience.

@@martharoman3138 Unfortunately it has changed much over the last few decades. It’s still my favourite place on earth, but honestly a lot of the growth has been unchecked with no overall planning to ensure the infrastructure can support all the new hotels, etc. It’s especially challenging during the dry months in this water -stressed region.
