Nice tie Phillip! I stumbled into your videos about a month ago looking for a booby fly tying pattern for still water fishing. Your still water patterns are awsome! I have also purchased some of your flies & your book, Fly Patterns for Stillwaters. The information on trout entomology and Stillwater fly design / tying is a valuable resource to the Stillwater fisherman. The floating dragons / booby's / Batman fly on a short leader with a full sink line is deadly on panfish, bass & trout! Keep the videos & books coming! You need to do a Dragon's & Damsels Fly Patterns for Stillwaters book! Seriously! Tight lines! Cheers!

Hi John, thanks for the kind words and pleased to hear that you enjoy my videos. Thanks as well for purchasing a copy of my Fly Patterns for Stillwaters book. I am just wrapping up a new book, the Orvis Guide to Stillwater Fly Fishing. With the turmoil surrounding the pandemic, the release date has been pushed back and I haven't received an updated release date. I like your book idea, perhaps some e-books on a variety of food sources including dragons and damsels? Cheers, Phil

As a UK angler I can attest to the effectiveness of this fly. It also works with slow sinking and intermediate lines and to support a team of small nymph or midge patterns. Either as a point fly or on the top dropper. On the point when using a floating, sink tip, or intermediate line. Cast it out. One steady draw to keep the presentation and contact with the team of flies. Then a variable retrieve short or long pulls. A figure of eight. Or twitch. The movement of the boobie draws in the fish that may then hit that or the nymph. Pause after a few movements the amount of takes during those hangs are numerous. Especially at the last moment before lifting off to recast a ten to fifteen second hang will earn bonus fish. The fly to not take your attention off is that boobie on the point. Any take on the nymph will cause the the boobie to move forwards faster or to the side. So if during a pause the boobie twitches or moves? tighten into it. The ultimate market leader for competition anglers to get the best and latest Fritz is a company called FNF. The company is run by a top UK competition angler. His team are absolutely the cutting edge. They also produce lines and what many consider to be the ultimate best ever vice produced in the UK. The FNF Tallon. Produced to aerospace tolerances from the best materials. I will put up links to his site

Thanks for taking the time to place your comment, Michael. I love Kevin's FNF products and use them almost exclusively for my FABs, Booby's, Wotsits and Blobs. Thanks for the presentation tips as well. The washing line and hang are critical components of my stillwater presentations. Cheers, Phil

Hey Phillip, I love the booby, I have learned to make my own out of foam cylinders and a dremmell tool. I also have used adhesive flat foam and stuck it together cut out the cylinder with an old sharpened antenna on a drill. Works marvelously. Rainey's it great but a bit expensive for me. I have to work a little harder to save a penny. All those pennies add up. Thanks for all the tips. Because of a handicap I have a boat and fish still water just so I don't have to concentrate on fishing and anchoring in a rushing river. All the best, Thanks for sharing your expertise. I do appreciate it. Sean

+Sean Mooney Thanks Sean, you can also purchase Booby Foam online from FlyMart.ca or Devin Olsen's Tactical Fly Fisher. I have been using Booby Foam cylinders more and more of late due to the cost factor you mentioned. Cheers, Phil

I ordered hollow punches in sizes 5/32 (4mm), 3/16 (5mm) and 7/32 (6mm) made my own "Boobie" eyes using the foam can holders.I found at Michaels. The holder cost me $5, way cheaper then paying $1/Rainy eye. Barry Radelet

Hey Phil awesome tie! I'm having trouble finding the Rainy's booby eyes, I was wondering where you get them from?

Shea Doyle Hi Shea, where are you located? I get mine from Fish Tales Fly Shop in Calgary. Cheers, Phil

Philip Rowley Hey Phil, I'm located in Kamloops. Does Fish Tales have an online store? I checked at wholesale sports today and couldn't find them. So I imagine that i'll have to order them online. Also, thank you so much for replying, I understand you're a busy guy and your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Shea, I am not sure but I believe they offer mail order. Their website is www.fishtalesflyshop.com. You might also be able to see if Trout Waters in Kelowna and Michael and Young in Surrey might offer them as well.

do you fish this wet or dry?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing6 жыл бұрын
Bobber the Clown Hi, you can fish a Booby on the surface. It is great waking fly. Most times however we fish a Booby on a variety of sinking lines using a brisk strip pause retrieve.

Thanks, I've tried it in the past and had no success. I'll give that a try.

Like any fly Booby's don't always work but it is well worth having a few stashed in your fly box for those times when triggering a grab as opposed to a feeding response is the only option available. Thanks, Phil
