Terence tells a great story about his girlfriend leaving him, and reflects on attachment and addiction that seem to permeate society.

@@NiePieerdol This is a concept similar to avoiding conformity. Suppose you addicted to avoiding ruts of any kind which could turn into an addiction. You've kind of addicted to variety, obsessively never doing the same thing too much or even back to back. Although that might not be such a bad thing. It kind of reminds me of diversity whatever that is. Most people think of diversity as a homogenous mixture. But if thats all there is is one big homogenous mixture then there are no diversity of mixtures. There's only one thing. Real diversity is an impressionist painting. It needs chaos and order, pockets of organization and disorganization of every kind.

But should people have to reach the point of their emotional crises becoming literally life-threatening before they feel validated to seek intervention from the supposedly rational, compassionate humans around them? This is not any kind of attack on you or your comment, Oliver. Just a serious question for our society. Why are we not IN each other's emotional lives for the common good? Everyone has pain they are hiding and hiding from. Why must we keep on in this pattern of behavior when it for everyone becomes at some point untenable and self-destructive? Other animals get addicted as well,- it’s that we are probably the first animals to actually keep ourselves addicted on such a large scale. We live in a human based world, our cultures and habits are a product of our perspective, and our perspective there of,- but other animals live in their separate worlds. Like a waterstrider probably has no understanding of quantum physics, and no need for for human art,- but its world is not that different than that of humans, it’s all about perspective, it’s a waterstrider world. Humans are not separate beings from the rest of life,- life is life, there are no rights or wrongs, only what we created,- life is a novelty, which is nor good or bad, it’s new :) I do appreciate Terence, but his words are not life rules, I see what he says as philosophy,- cause no one can know, it’s only part truths and thoughts,- there are no person that knows, ideology never goes well. ;)

@@jonmustang Well isn't that the point with psychedelics or drugs generally - you take them cause they put you in a state of mind that is better than your baseline one. They give you better chemistry. Frankly I know that in general things are better on valium or opiates, just how it is, they put your chemistry into a better state. Unless you live in some utopia like existence, you're being constantly bombarded with negative energies, even if you are rich and can buy a decent place to live that can still happen - lots of rich people buy some supposed luxury getaway then discover there's industry noise or logging or similar going on nearby etc. So of course you need drugs..

But taking something over and over because it's pleasurable isn't an addiction. It might be overall negative, because it depends what it is they find pleasurable and why. eg, say rabbits eat magic shrooms all the time because they enjoy them - well that isn't addiction. But say they eat creosote off fences etc - then that is, because it's actually a poison that kills them, or makes them ill, or otherwise debilitates them. Another example - if you smoke daily then that's it, you pay money and you smoke it into the air. However if you gamble, unless you overall win all the time!, then it's different because the pleasure part ONLY occurs IF you win. You don't really get much pleasure (beyond the initial possible thrill of maybe winning) for your money from it, if it was compared to buying smokes then the equivalent would be that you lose some or all of your smokes every time you buy any. Therefore if that one is your addiction then it's a bad one to have, the other not so bad from a purely money & trade off point of view. Animals don't addict to run away from anything or to block something else out. Animals will also keep on eating given the option to generally.

It's really weird with cannabis. When I'm smoking daily it seems difficult to stop it. Yet when I run out and can't get hold of any, after the second day I don't miss it anymore. Happened to me 2 months ago and I still don't feel the need to start again. At some point I'll probably get some again and the cycle repeats.

Its probably because you think more about it when you know you have it , so you end up smoking because you were thinking about it and it trigerred the feeling.
@shubhamsahakari97084 жыл бұрын
I get where you're coming from, I just started Sober September to test myself, first few days were hard since I wanted to smoke up everytime something mildly uncomfortable happened, but now I feel like I respect the plant more, I still intend to go all the way, but I now realise how much it helps and how most of us take for granted, a break genuinely helps get everything in perspective and see how I've been using it and how I SHOULD be using it.
@moonwatch79634 жыл бұрын
Psychologically addictive, but the body doesn't necessarily need it. I find if I don't smoke as much though, I get irritable way easier, it's like at night I need that off-switch for my mind, to take a break from thinking. Lots of people have that problem but they are on meds for it instead - it's a pity that the medical people do not realise how useful cannabis is for that switching off and getting some peace in your head.
@Axiomatic754 жыл бұрын
@@moonwatch7963 It's a good "off switch" in some ways (to relieve tension) but personally I find myself getting irritable during the day much more when I smoke cannabis. @@Axiomatic75 I very rarely puff during the day anymore, but it does the opposite for me there too. "We give each other too much permission to be weak" This is such a pressing line, not to mention his call that TV was just a crude version of a far more potent version of digital drugs coming. The way society wants us all to ignore reality and let each other be overly sensitive today is ridiculous. I can't workout, yes you can your too weak to do it, I can't stop using this drug, yes you can you're too weak to do it, I can't resolve my issues with my parents or partner, yes you can you're both too weak to do it, people need to take a cement pill harden up and put in the work to resolve these psychologically difficult issues, hard things do exist, but even still the barriers we allow ourselves to build in the mind are the true challenge for us to overcome.

The one for you doesn't take away from you if you did part. Some people manipulate others emotionally - they steal from your soul, like literally. And if you are tricked into thinking that is love, then that is where attachment problems can come from. It's like you have invested in them, in a future that involves them, and when that ends it takes away your investment - you are left with this whole future branch that no longer exists. There's also other ways to lose someone....don't take anything for granted ever. Most of course live out of the moment, and many that think they live in the moment are just talking about extreme-sports type of 'living in the moment' like you have to cram all this sh1t into each breath every second - which has nothing to do with what actually being in the moment is about at all. Just a general comment on the overall theme of relationships and ending of them.

My best friend wasn't so lucky, he didn't have much money so he progressed to shooting up quickly until his veins collapsed and started shooting it into his muscle, causing them to break down, which also released toxins and damaged all his organs, but mainly his heart and when his heart stopped even though they revived him within like a minute his brain was too damaged from the oxygen deprivation which was very surprising considering the short time he wasn't breathing and he never woke up. His mom had to unplug him a couple weeks later. That could've easily been me. Well.. Definitely not TM's most lucid or mindful rant. I do enjoy the poetry with which T often speaks whether or not it really has any actual scientific merit (little of his particular brand of preaching does). However, this rant leaves me feeling a bit off-put. Equating the self-induced agony of a heartbreak to very real physical chemical addictions, such as the heroin he mentions, is just a total intellectual misfire. Withdrawal from something like heroin shares not a single common overlap with a heart ache (yes Terrence, withdrawal is far far far a greater pain than you have luckily never known). It minimizes or, at the very least, confuses the word. If he wants to claim we can be addicted to painting or addicted to socializing then we need a different word for what it means to be actually addicted, physically and mentally. This talk feels careless to me

Lol @ heroin withdrawal not being worse than vomiting every 4 hours....ha! I don’t wish heroine addiction/withdrawals on my worst enemy.
