I was the concept artist on the team that designed this scene. I designed the A-10 Color scheme as well as the visual effects concepts and ideas for the scene. These birds were flown out of Kirtland Air Force Base, ABQ, New Mexico. The movie studio we worked out of was a hop, skip, and a jump from the base. I'm glad to see professional eyes on the scene to critique it. I always wanted to know what real pilots thought about the scene.

Are you telling us that there was a single frame of real A-10 footage in that? Because it all looks CGI.
@SPEEDPAINTER1
@SPEEDPAINTER1 3 жыл бұрын
@@ReptileRescue No of course not. I said I worked on the Visual Effects concepts for that scene. The scene had to be designed and digitally constructed. When I said the birds were flown out of Kirkland, I meant the base post apocalypse in the story. I should have made that clear. My bad on that. However, Kirkland was the setting for some key scenes. Moon, the actress was taken up in some flights aboard actual A-10s on the base. Also, many of the Resistance characters were Air Force personnel as well I think. The Air Force was incredibly helpful and awesome in the making of that film.
@SPEEDPAINTER1
@SPEEDPAINTER1 3 жыл бұрын
@@ReptileRescue Oh, I almost forgot. I think the cockpit footage might have been accomplished using actual A-10 Cockpits green screened. I don't think they built cockpit bucks for that. I think those interior cockpits are the real deal.

@@SPEEDPAINTER1 mover points out that its not an A-10 cockpit since the chute does not match up. its possible they built a set for the scene. also do you know why CGI artists use massive fire ball explosions so much? its not very realistic and i always assume that its a mony saving issue since they are probably easier to animate.
@SPEEDPAINTER1
@SPEEDPAINTER1 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrChickennugget360 If they didn't use actual cockpits, which I would have done (saves a shit ton of money), they might have built what are called "buck "sets. We built buck sets of the Batmobile in Batman Vs. Superman. They're expensive, but provide a lot of control production wise. As for explosions in CGI- remember it's Hollywood. Big explosions are cool to see. Ever see a grenade go off? Not that exciting right? Add a fiery explosion, and it's more fun to watch. I thinks that's why. Sometimes, explosions are exaggerated to emphasize a plot point. I know what you're getting at. It can get ridiculous hahahaha.

We had one...the F-14D Tomcat carried the greatest air to air weapon ever developed (by Raytheon)...the AIM-54 Phoenix. Capable of locking onto a target from over 90 miles away and being released with 99% certainty of a kill. The original "Fire and forget" missiles. Sadly, all 732 of our F-14 Tomcats were sold to the Islamic Republic of Iran with them taking the last delivery September of 2016. She was a very, very beautiful and formidable bird.
@goldenhide
@goldenhide 3 жыл бұрын
@@GuildofThunder There is sooo much wrong here. The Phoenix and especially later models used by the US were fired 3 times at a hostile target. The first two had more ignition issues and the last lost the target as it fled away from the Tomcat. All Tomcat kills (like say Gulf of Sidra) were done with Sparrows and Sidewinders. The 80 F-14A's were delivered to pre-revolutionary Iran under the Shah and after the revolution they never received another airframe, so your 2016 claim is absolutely wrong. It's been estimated in the last decade they might have 20 or so still airworthy after losses of skilled pilots, RIO's, and technicians as well as airframe life wear, training incidents, and their actual combat losses during the Iran-Iraq War, which they claimed to have fired around 90 Phoenixes with a claim of up to 60 scores, including one who claims he destroyed four with one missile and another who claimed he splashed a pair of MiG-23's in close formation, but air combat claims are always overdone and Cooper's 2002 book has some real sourcing issues. The highest scoring Tomcat pilot by confirmed kills is Major Jalil Zandi of the IRIAF with 8 confirmed +3 possible/maybe. No one gave them anymore F-14's. And just because the paper statistics say something has a 100nm operational range doesn't mean it will absolutely hit and kill. Absolute/Operational Range and the Range of High Probability of Kill are two *very* different things and the latter is typically much shorter than the former.

On my day off a pilot asked if anyone wanted to go to California for a parts run ! A couple of us said yes so we took off on a parts run ! The pilot didn’t say we were going to the Grand Canyon first but that’s where we went ! DOWN INTO THE CANYON ! That was a neat ride ! Then we went to California to get the parts ! I’m not sure what base we flew into but I think it was Alameda! Fun stuff back in 1975 !

As a former sonar tech, I was appalled that they put the radar dish from an E-2 Hawkeye on a submarine in this film. It literally serves no purpose because radar doesn't work underwater, and it would actually increase the acoustic signature of the sub and make it MORE detectable....which defeats the entire purpose of a submarine. Does Hollywood even bother with military technical advisors anymore? 🙄

I am almost certain you will find EVERYTHING wrong with that scene, but it is not short on entertainment value (namely because it carries one of the most epic scores ever written for film by lead Composer (the best of all time) Hans Zimmer, with Henry-Gregson Williams (The Chronicles of Narnia) and Nick-Glenny Smith (The Man In The Iron Mask) - in case you were wondering). Another continuity point for you, it's my understanding that when ejecting from an A-10 the canopy is punched off first, then the pilot goes after the canopy has cleared the airframe. I'm not entirely sure the seat in an A-10 is fitted with canopy breakers, nor do I recall ever seeing explosive charges built in to the canopy to aid a seat going through it. I could be wrong though, happy to be corrected.

TTO probably means "Time To Objective". Also the disparity of pilot equipment can be attributed to the story happening after the machines attacked so equipment is more of a whatever works scenario. BTW I enjoy your videos.

The pilot had the 5 fingers cut off his glove because he plays banjo, it's in his back story. And It's very likely he was fragged, not destroyed by the machines, because he plays banjo.

Just discovered your channel, good stuff. Wondering if you've listened to the almost 2 hour video with the 9/11 ATC and military transmissions and transcripts. There was a lot of confusion that day and a some of the jargon makes it even tougher to understand the level of disbelief and confusion that was going on that morning. You could even hear it in the voices of pilots who scrambled asking if it was an exercise or real world. Would be interesting to get your take on it. Thanks!

Pulling high alpha in an A-10 like that is a great way to snap the airframe. Seriously. The thing was already falling apart when it first left the assembly line due to air frame stress, it's worse now.

What about some Japanese anime scenes in the future haha. Such as the famous Patlabor F-15 Interception scene, air combat /dogfight scenes from Yukikaze. Lots of them are actually far more well made than the hollywood hokums though. There are some English captioned short scenes on YTB, but I'm not sure whether you can use them...

A few points I thought I'd bring up. The guy who fell in the water is a cyborg. Not as fully mechanical as the T-600s, and having more biological components than the T-800s (classic Arnie), so I'd say he could survive, particularly as you see later in the film the basically cutting open to expose his inner workings, and he survives. The A-10 pilot is a her, not a he. Williams is played by Moon Bloodgood, my favourite part of Salvation. My second favourite being that they dropped the whole time travel aspect of the franchise. Wish the sequels had stayed in the future war. Could the missile at the first part of the clip be using a mils compass heading? When I served in the british army we did all compass headings in 'mils' of which there are 6400 in a circle. It allows for much more precise navigation, and given that this was a, supposedly, precission strike, I'd think that they'd want to be as exact as possible, so why use a 360 degree compass heading when a 6400 mils compass heading would be more accurate? 385 mils would be about about 21.65625 degrees. Sorry for the late reply, and now I'll get back to enjoying the rest of the play list,
