Looks really great. The only thing I would've done differently is add some ink or paint to the plaster to give it a grey hue so when the inevitable chip happens to the piece it wont be noticeable

A much quicker way to fill the cake cases is to use expanding foam, which comes in aerosol cans, and leaves your terrain MUCH lighter to carry :-) You may have to trim the expanded part off after it dries overnight, but you can then use the excess that you've cut off to make mini hills (Cover them in cheap wood filler or wood glue that's been thinned down to seal it. A few coats of watered down wood glue, thickened slightly with each coat, will leave you able to spray the mini hill without melting the foam) or for packing into other cake cases (I spray into one half of the case, then put the other half back on top, so the foam expands to fill both at once, and then, when it's dried overnight, some careful cutting with a bread knife will separate both halves. Then lay a sheet of sandpaper on a table top/flat surface, and gently sand the foam flat, and you're ready to go :-D).

Expanding foam is a great idea, I'll have to pick some up and give it a go.

The vintage Dagobah playset came with foam for the swamp to trap R2D2, and the foam always disintegrates. I'm wondering if ALL foam eventually disintegrates and if that includes foam core board, and foam insulation including the expanding types. Maybe if they're sealed with glue the air or whatever catalyst causes the breakdown, maybe then they would be Ok. Another lightweight option might be some plaster in the bottom, then crumpled up tin foil to add bulk, and fill gaps with more plaster, may act like a kind of rebar to strengthen it too. These might break if dropped. But it looks great!!

I once tried filling some cake cases with dental casting resin, which is MUCH lighter than plaster, and makes carrying the model much easier as a result. The biggest draw-back in using this stuff is the sheer expense of it, however, as it costs a small fortune per bag, and if you buy it from a supplier, the P&P pretty much matches the price of the bag of resin (It's a LOT, believe me, I speak from experience :-/) I also tried using model clay such as Fimo, which worked, but made the model just as heavy as if I'd used plaster, and that proved expensive, too. I try to model on a tight budget, so my local discount shops are a gold mine I go to regularly, as they sell expanding foam in aerosol cans, and wood glue/filler dirt cheap, so I save lots of money by buying bulk quantities. Charity shops are also a good place to have a try for finding things that could be made into scenery, or even miniatures, as I found a huge two-headed fantasy wolf figure, a dozen velociraptors and a set of tigers all in scale with my Fantasy minis, so bought the whole lot for less than €2!!!! The tigers I'm painting up as the Jade Tiger character from D&D books, so my fellow gamers are pretty delighted to see them, even though I'm only part way through painting them. The 2 headed-wolf is finished and marauding warbands already, and the velociraptors are being added slowly to my Snake Men army for Frostgrave, as a form of fast attack "mercenaries." :-) I also found some huge Smilodon (Sabre toothed tigers) figures in a discount shop (3 for just €6), so bought a dozen of them, and they're now painted up as a monster cavalry/fast attack/OH MY GOD!!! unit for our larger games where monsters are used in blocks to assault elite units or just scare the heck out of our opponents from other clubs :-D If you want some interesting foliage for your models, try your local pet store, and their aquarium plants selection, as they have some incredible plants, pre-painted, and they look amazing when placed as scenery or as part of a scratch-build model :-D

That looks so great!! I'm saving a large square plastic tray that had fruit in it, it's got a sort of criss cross pattern on it that might remind me of textured ceilings in Victorian homes, was wondering if I could paint it for a dollhouse ceiling or something. I took cake decorating classes and was worried when I saw you made something of cake!! But you never know, yesterday I watched a woman make tiny purses out of used tea bags, with the tea still inside!! Painted them with nail polish added some metal, bits of chain, look like little leather handbags. Nail polish gets used a lot in the miniature house community. I've been saving tea bags for awhile, originally with the idea of composting them.

@@Falvodor clear nail polish is a must for a shiny or wet look, like wet pot of food maybe, I use it to prevent metal from tarnishing, when I made jewelry once I had a piece if copper polished and shiny, I'd coat it in clear nail polish to prevent tarnishing and making my wrist turn green. Good to use on posts for pierced ears too to prevent any bad reaction to metals. Even for doll earrings, they can discolor the vinyl sometimes. So definitely get clear, doesn't the dollar store have it? Brown or red could be blood spilled, they've got metallic colors too I think. Stained glass looks for windows too, or Tiffany style lamps. But definitely get clear. Saw a person made a model of the Jaws shark, I told her she needed some wet puddle under where it was strung up for the Water dripping from it. Brings that next level of realism

@@Falvodor I'm waiting to finish my Chapstick so I can turn the cap into a pot for the stove of my dollhouse, or a mug for a Barbie, just add a strip of paper for a handle, made stronger with nail polish. And I'll need to get a Barbie I guess.

@@Falvodor here's a video where a lady used nail polish to make mini coffee drinks, complete with that heart pattern on top from coffee and foam, only with alternating white and coffee colored nail polish kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIbRopebip2Lp8k It looks very convincing but too large for what you're doing. If you have a pig roasting maybe you can make it shiny though? 🐷 😁

As someone who uses cake packaging and cake boards for the basis of scenery, I applaud you most highly for this video :-D I also use the lids from sweet boxes (Quality Street etc) for the bases of scenery builds. My diet is out of the window, but my my scenery collection is almost as fat as my waist line now LOL :-D I ask my neighbours/club-mates for their food packaging along with other trash, and recycle it into all kinds of weird and wonderful things to game with :-) Most of it is free, so I save lots of money to buy new paints/glue and minis, so it all works in my favour. People throw so much useful stuff away, and then people like me come along and ask if they can have it, which always makes them look sideways at me, but as I've found, if you ask shops nicely for access to their recyclable trash bins, they let you forage for materials, save money on their trash recycling charges, and save some items specially for you when they find them. Asking your school caretaker is also a way to find some interesting materials, as, speaking as an ex-caretaker myself, they get a LOT of useful "trash" to throw away, and if you're polite, will keep some things aside for you. Show them some respect, explain what you want the stuff for, and they'll supply you with a whole host of interesting items for you to get down and creative with :-D LOVE this video, by the way :-D Keep making them, and I'll keep being inspired :-D

If you donate a small scene to the classroom, like a building and a tree, they can see what you do, and use it for an example of the type of thing that can be made with trash and glue and paint when they need to make a diorama. Not everyone is crafty or have crafty parents. I put electricity in my son's dioramas, it was so fun to hear about the reaction of the other kids when he flipped the switch and the torches, fire pits lit up, or the full moon and stars lit up. Too fun

@@commanderslasher1842 I only use 2-3 in a session of DND usually and I play on a roughly 2ftx2ft area. It'll depend on how large you make them and how densely packed you want the village to look. Personally I've made 5 in total and that has seen great versatility and the ability to make quite dense streets if need be.

Yeah these look nice, but my dad has diabetes so this video is useless. haha. One trick would be to put some bottles into the plaster to make it lighter. Also I like to use cut up zip ties for adding some gribbly detail.
