Dude, it was insane! I found my car, don't ask me how, after sunrise parked on the "wrong" side of the street like three feet from the curb. I can't believe it wasn't towed! It was covered in dust and dirt and looked like it was left and abandoned in the Sahara desert and camped upon by roaming nomadic Tuareg's. Two summons's were tucked under a wiper blade. LOL! I had a great spot during the show, smack dab in front of Phil Lesh. So much other great memories of those days!

I grew up in Englishtown and was only 9yrs old at the time and too young to attend the show; at least by myself. I had no idea who or what the grateful dead were but my folks did and we're pretty much against the idea of taking us but when my dad realized this was a peaceful crowd with no marauding gangs of bikers, he loaded us in his a WV wagon and took us to the show. Well, not inside the show but as close as I e could drive; we lived about 2 miles away. He let a bunch hippies sit on the hood and took a back road to pension rd where we stopped and parked at a friend of his then we walked to near the entrance of Raceway Park and hung out for 20 minutes or so listing to the music and people watching. I remember the music sounding so good and people were all so nice, it branded a permanent groove in me that marked the beginning of a long journey of well over 100 dead shows and at least that many post Jerry. I regret not being able to go into the show but was eternally grateful to my father who took us their, my sisters as well to experience this wonder and most amazing event that this small town had never seen and to this day has nothing coming close. What an amazing experience for a 9yr old kid.

First Dead show, Took bus from Port Authority and got separated from our other friend who couldn't get on the bus. Believe it or not we actually found him right before the Dead went on. Only at a Dead show!

Next morning, woke up behind an abandoned fuel station on Rt9, walked all the way to that spot and passed out. Stepped out in the road, stuck my thumb out, 2nd car stopped, turned out to be a close friend from my home town, took me right to my crib, only after a Dead show.

I was there an it was a treat that someone recorded it. The He's Gone was unbelievable. I met some guy, we hung, he helped me find my car, even wondered if I had one. I recall him saying are you sure you have a car. We found it and I drove him. Lot's of great memories. Great guy. Wouldn't mind if he found this a dropped a line. It was so much fun.

I graduated HS in 1977, My girlfriend Ann, her brother and i were about the first 50 People in the night before the concert. We slept about 20 feet from the stage and enjoyed the concert there the next day. Some thoughtful roadie put a garden hose with running water into the crowd. The only water we got that day, turned everything to mud. I abandoned my sleeping bag. Didn't see Ann's brother until the show was over. Don't know what he got into, but he wasn't quite the same after that. Now here I am Jamming with the Dead on KZbin some 40 odd years later.

very cool! i was 16 and had already seen Johnny Winter, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc in NYC but this was only my 2nd of an eventual 40-50 Dead shows. the crowd was so big i was scared to leave where we were encamped as i'd never find my way back. we had a small arsenal of comestibles with us, all put to good use. we left while Terrapin was playing to drive back to upstate NY and although we had parked WAY far away (we arrived maybe 6 a.m.), we heard the the final chords loud & clear at the car.

we got to Englishtown late Friday night in a red Willies w/no top, parked on the side of the road, saw an overturned Good Humor truck. They let the crowd in around 4am Saturday morning, we put down a blanket and had a cooler, I fell asleep and when I woke up there were thousands of people behind us ! we tried to find water, people were sinking in the mud near the port a johns, it was so HOT...I saw a stand w/cyclops posters and HELLS ANGELS were on top of the trailers that surrounded the concert

Yepp and Indeed to all comments ......this was my 1st Dead show as well,,,,,superb concert/show/event/experience ! ! ....New Riders began @ 1pm or so,......followed by Marshall Tucker round 3:00-3:30.......and then da DEAD played from late afternoon/early evening until 11:30 pm.......i was with a group of bout 10 people ,we took 2 cars and got stuck in either Lincoln or Holland tunnel for an hr or 2 due to an accident.and we,like most had to park a loooong way from Raceway park after the slow procession thru the streets of Englishtown,Though the locals began letting concert goers park on their properties for a fee.we went the nite before and got a campsite at "Turkey Swamp" park, lol. To this day i still cannot believe we found where we had parked after thee show ended.

Wow! I found my 17-year-old self in one of the pics on here! At 2:41 there's a still shot that contains my friend Mike with his red shirt on his head and me to the right, jeans and no shirt. It's taken from exactly where we were that day. I first noticed it in the "Bertha" clip and see it's used in a few of these. GottMike, any chance you could send me a digital copy of that photo? Let me know, OK? Thanks for the memories!
