Terrapin - Syd Barrett - Official Lyric Video

"Terrapin" is the opening song on Syd Barrett's first solo album The Madcap Laughs. Its arrangement is sparse, like much of the album, and features only acoustic and electric guitar accompaniment to the vocals. This song, along with "Maisie" and "Bob Dylan Blues"; reflected Barrett's early interest in the blues. Iggy the Eskimo, one of Barrett's acquaintances, had called the song "quite catchy".
The song reappeared on the Harvest Records compilation Picnic - A Breath of Fresh Air and is The Madcap Laughs' sole representative on The Peel Session.
The Syd Barrett Appreciation Society titled its official magazine Terrapin (published 1972-1976), in tribute to the song.
Recording
Preparing Madcap, in April 1969, Barrett played demo tapes of songs to producer Malcolm Jones,[at the latter's request. After the playbacks, Barrett performed, on guitar, several tracks for Jones, one being "Terrapin"
The album version was recorded in just one take on 11 April. The lead guitar was overdubbed on 26 April.

I'm from a generation that got into Pink Floyd via Syd Barrett rather than the other way round. I just finished listeing to DSOTM for the first time in years and everything I like about that era of Floyd is just immediately captured far better by this one song by Syd. Writing classes always state 'Show don't tell'' 'Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way' is a terrific quotable line but by god Syd does a far better job of showing what its like to be a bored english adolescent staring out of a window on an eternal weekend afternoon dreaming up a world all of your own.

There are no words to describe how I felt the first time I listened terrapin, and it is the same feeling after years. It's a combination between happiness, melancholy, sadness and joy when he changes to the A major chord. It's a magic feeling of sadness and happiness at the same time. Hard to explain, there is no one like Syd.

Why do so many people focus on the admittedly shambolic production of this album and not how well crafted the songs are. This song, for instance, has a very advanced musicality that would not become vogue for another 25 years. A mature talent, so sad it went away. I wish Syd would have recorded some songs in his home (ala Daniel Johnston) to be released after his death.

He probably did have a way with words, but he had a lot of different techniques developed that no one really ever talks about. I found a rare book one time that I haven’t been able to phone since it was about Pink Floyd in 1967 and it has some Roger Waters stuff in it where he elaborated on how Sid wrote lyrics he pulled from everything because octopus is just lines from forms stitch together

Thanks RHCP and John Frusciante, I recently went back to listen to Pink Floyd's old albums, it occurred to me that I had never listened to Syd Barrett's work in particular. But the day before yesterday, when I was watching the video of RHCP's live in Argentina, I saw John Frusciante singing a song called Terrapin, and it brought me here. Absolutely masterpiece.

@@rubeng3 great song to learn, one thing about syd barret acoustic tunes that can better your playing is seeing the chords he used that were out of key and the feeling they give. That can be used for when writing your own chord progression and wantin to throw things off.

Seine beiden Soloplatten hätten mit Pink Floyd eingespielt werden müssen,da wären sie musikalisch besser geworden !!! Die erste Platte The Piper..... ist eine gute Platte. Syd Barrett und Pink Floyd haben gut zusammengepasst.. Leider hatte Syd die falschen Freunde gehabt. Die Wohngemeinschaft in der Syd lebte haben sein Leben versaut !!! Er hang zuviel mit den Junkies ab... Eine echte Tragödie für Syd und seine Familie.. Er ist als Maler und Musiker gescheitert. Die Psychiatrie war damals noch nicht soweit. Hat er jemals eine Therapie gemacht. ???
