I live in the woods and making terrariums is something I just started doing. I have been harvesting the plants I use, many types of liverworts, moss, and ferns as well as other plants that I've noticed grows very slowly like ivy. I usually just take some of the soil that the plant was originally doing well on and I use that as substrate and I use activated charcoal from my wood stover as a false bottom as well as stones from the creek bed. My projects were originally focused on a variety of species but I have recently started hard scaping. Thank you for this video, I appreciate it!

I picked up a nearly identical container and made a terrarium today with some leftover materials from my last one+stuff from the yard. Nice piece of quartz I found plus white nerve plants a small pothos and some ferns and moss I harvested. Thankfully my springtail culture is going crazy so I was probably able to get 100+ directly into the substrate and 4 Isopods from the yard. Hopefully mine and yours settle in nicely

Very interesting video, thanks for sharing that precious wisdom! My experience is mostly the same, except one difference: When I set up a terrarium of that kind, my goal is to do as few maintenance as possible; keep it closed and untouched for long periods. Means: my soil mixture contains way less organic (nutritious) material, but instead it includes about 30% nutrient-poor soil, some fine gravel (*) and some "chips" of loam. The plants will not grow as fast, but imo that helps the terrarium getting quicker into the phase of biologic vs. microbiologic balance. (* organic material will be self-supplient by the terrarium itself, but minerals can't!)

00:00 🌱 Making a terrarium can be daunting for beginners, but this guide covers everything from container selection to plant care. 02:01 🏞 Creating a drainage layer is crucial for a healthy terrarium, with options like pea gravel, leca, or outdoor stones. 03:16 🛡 Use window screen mesh as a substrate barrier to prevent soil from falling into the drainage layer. 03:48 🌿 The substrate mix should consist of cocoa fiber, sphagnum moss, orchid bark, charcoal, and worm castings for optimal plant growth. 05:37 ⛏ Choose hardscape materials like dragonstone, lava rock, or slate stone to add texture and depth to your terrarium. 07:00 🌿 Select moss species like fern moss, cushion moss, or mood moss for lush greenery, considering their growth rate and light requirements. 08:58 🌱 Planting includes species like fittonia, peperomia, and hydrocotyl, ensuring they're suited for terrarium conditions. 10:34 🐜 Introducing springtails helps create a balanced ecosystem by consuming mold and decaying matter, providing natural fertilizer for plants. 11:03 💧 Proper watering is essential; avoid overwatering and aim for a damp substrate, especially with a sealed terrarium. 11:37 💡 Lighting options include LED lights or indirect sunlight, with regular airing to maintain terrarium health.

I found this video while searching for instructions so that my granddaughter could build a terrarium with the container used on her 15th birthday for gift-cards. Such a wonderful video to get her started! However, it’s your thumb that called my attention. Several members in my family (my mom and my paternal aunt included) have clubbed thumbs along with a short toe (brachymetatarsia) next to the pinky toe. Very rare bone condition, even rarer in the same family as mine. So far, only one of the grandkids has that condition and it happens to be a boy! (This is a condition more often developed in girls than in boys. )

This is an excellent well detailed tutorial! Only thing is i wished you explained more of why a terrarium needs these things- because it represents a rainforest. Im from the Colorado Mountains, and we have very dry, desert forests and all the local plants ive harvested would not like this environment at all. I know this is a tutorial for beginners but it would be nice to know what kind of environments these plants naturally come from and thrive in for the more advanced botanists.
