Dear Dark Den master, I have been coping with arachnophobia for my whole life and only a year ago, I decided to start solving the problem. I am happy to say that as for today, I live together with 2 small house spiders. They have their networks of webs freely in the house and I manage to co-exist with them, even feed them tiny insects from time to time... crazy network architects they are. But looking into the future, I really wish to have a tarantula with a proper enclosure and stuff at one point (that point is definitely not YET!). I still have a ton to learn about those amazing creatures but was wondering if you could spare a minute to maybe guide me in the right direction a bit. Namely, there are sooooo many species out there and me being a recovering phobic and a newbie, would like to know your ideas on the exact species which would be the most "calm" and slow, "boring" type. Surely I will be keeping my distance from the old world guys. Hope you find the time to respond and thank you for the amazing content! Discovering your content was actually the final push I needed to start dealing with the phobia-issue and to face the problem head-on. Thanks again! =)

I started watching these to get over my phobia to and can now successfully save spiders from the bath! My nan always said it was a poor house that couldnt keep a spider and i am starting to think about actually getting one to. I love how he talks about them like most people talk about a fancy kitten!

I used to gag trying to apply mascara because my eyelashes were too similar to spider legs. I'm better now, even held a tarantula once, but I still fear the smaller ones. Good for you, and the others who responded to you. There's a lot of us on these tarantula keeping chanels, working through our fear. Thanks to all the keepers helping us out!

Honestly the calmest and most boring ones are some of the brachypelma/tiltocatl, but I don't rlly find them beginner friendly, cuz they are,,, so,,,, boring. They barely grow, they often go on feeding strikes for long times. Like, half a year easy, same with grammostola pulcher. The sweetest pet rocks, but slow grower. It rlly depends on you, whether you want to get an adult or a sling. While adults might be calmer, a sling forces you to grow along with it, and for me, it's just a different bond. Watching this tiny fragile thing grow up to be healthy, big and beautiful, while under your care and responsibility is the best thing about the hobby to me. My first was a lasiodora parahybana, hardy, great eater (even if it may be intimidating at first, it's the most fun part besides molting) and fast grower and as an adult, she's absolutely sweet, hard to startle and when you do, she just hides. I own a few p. Machala, stunning males, fast growers, great eaters and even as a sling, pretty calm, never hide, no bolts. You might wanna check them out too.

@mydogeatspuke
@mydogeatspuke 3 жыл бұрын
@@wanderingsurf2842 it's because he has too many of them and not enough time. Same goes for the aggressive feeding responses, they're not fed as often as they'd like and as a result they give "great" takedown clips. He keeps adding to his collection as though they're not living things that need to be taken care of. It's VERY disappointing, but at least it's not just me noticing these things anymore.
@TheDarkDen
@TheDarkDen 3 жыл бұрын
You better not see how majority of people with bigger collection keep them. They don't really benefit from bigger enclosure, it's more for our perception, don't forget that they live in narrow burrows in nature that they never leave if there's enough food.

Biggest enabler ever! I hung in there for 3 months with just my A. Aviculara. I've been working on a cool bio enclosure. Then after watching too many of these and hearing "if you don't have this one get one! " constantly... I had 6 slings delivered this week. Trouble You should add warnings to the beginning of all videos, in fish culture we call it MTS multiple tank syndrome... altho, that does work for T's too 🤔 Great video!

"Some of them are a tiny, tiny bit too big for their enclosures.." Second tarantula is 2/3 the size of the entire floor space. This doesn't just happen overnight, it takes time for them to grow. You don't just open the enclosure one day after not seeing them for a week or two and find them enormous all of a sudden. There really is no excuse for letting them get that big before moving them into a larger space.

The T's are looking so nice and hungry! I love this video and thank you for sharing the experience!!!! Speaking of hungry, my Tliltocatl albopilosus (Scout if you remember, Is no longer angry after months, when I cleaned her tank.) The thing is she seems hungry everyday, on a cellular level I can understand its possible as they only consume the insides. However my questions are: 1) How often should I keep feeding her like this, I'm afraid of messing with her metabolism and other cellular functions. 2) Is there any truth to carapace to abdomen ratio, in determining whether the T has a sufficient nutrition?

Wow just listening to your podcast with Kat, then jumped onto your KZbin page and wow watching you feed these critters at 4am on the morning (I am in Australia) will give me happy dreams haha! I have a weird question, and since some know-it-alls suggested you give ur beautiful animals a bigger home, (which I have no idea about nor pretend to) my question is: Does spiders poo/wee? My dream is to own a python one day (ur probably aware that keeping exotic pets like non native tarantulas in Oz is highly illegal 😭) & I know that u have to clean a snakes cage out regularly because they need to get rid of the waste of their food. So cuz spiders liquify their prey does it come out from anywhere? Do you have to remove their moult does it start to smell or does it just decompose naturally into the substrate??
