I have nothing but respect for Christine Brennan, and have for years. I’ll listen to any podcast or KZbin clip that features her. And I agree with her 100% on this issue. Having Ms. Clark on the team would NOT have been the difference, between winning Gold or not in Paris. But it WOULD have brought MILLIONS of eyeballs to Women’s Olympic Basketball this summer, that now will be lost. And NBC and Peacock will lose MILLIONS of dollars in ad revenue from Clark’s sponsors, like Nike and State Farm. But worst of all, is that the momentum that’s been building for women’s basketball in general, will now be lost. And what people are losing sight of, is 2 things: First, Magic Johnson was put by USA Basketball on the Dream Team…at a time he wasn’t even in the NBA any longer. So all the talk about “earning” your spot on the Olympic roster with your play in the league, is nonsense. (And BTW I love Magic and agreed with the decision.) And second, what about “a rising tide lifts all boats”? People would have tuned in to watch Ms. Clark, and some would stick around and might have been lifetime WNBA fans. Why not “leverage” her popularity, to improve everyone’s earning power & quality of life - like Tiger Woods did for the average pro golfer’s net worth, and MJ did for the average NBA salary? And last but not least, Diana Taurasi is my favorite women’s basketball player…and was she on the 2004 Olympic team as a “rookie”? Go look it up - but you know the answer. So the reason so many of us agree with Ms. Brennan, is that every straw man argument against Ms. Clark that’s been raised, doesn’t hold up. And you know whose lives are going to be negatively impacted by this decision? Definitely not Ms. Clark’s - since as you know, she already got “the bag.” It’s the many great WNBA players who are women of color, and/or part of the LGBTQ+ community. They’re who make the level of play in the WNBA so high - but they also make $50,000-$75,000 on average. This was a chance to try to “move the needle,” in hopes that they might be paid more like world-class athletes, and wouldn’t have to spend the off-season playing in Russia - if they ever hope to own a home. So in the end, it’s not Caitlin Clark whose life & bank account will be harmed by USA Basketball’s decision….it’s the average WNBA player’s. And if the portion of Caitlin Clark’s fan base that’s motivated by race - and there’s no point in denying they exist - “turns against” the WNBA, the impact of her not being on the Paris Olympics roster, could potentially even be a REDUCTION in the net worth of the average WNNA player. And for Pete’s sake, who in the world wants to risk that?!
@camstegames84377 ай бұрын
....I remember old golfers not being thrilled about Tiger's hype. They shut up quick when they saw what was happening to the purses. You need to put your personal feelings aside sometimes for the good of the sport. She brings eyes. You want eyes. And you don't put her on the team the whole world would watch? 92 dream team is a big part of the reason why we have people like Luka and Jokic. How many young girls would have been exposed to the sport of basketball around the world thinking, "I can do that?"
@randymarsh69317 ай бұрын
Here’s the thing… Golf still made money before Tiger. The WNBA is, by definition, a charity league. If the NBA didn’t donate 10 million dollars a year to it, it would cease to exist. This is well known. The women know it, too. If Caitlin gets the league to a point where it can at least breakeven, the players know their grifting days are over. No longer can they cry to the press about equality. They have to pay the piper and admit their league is a sham. They don’t want Caitlin to save it, they want to continue living off the NBA’s donations as grifters. It’s sad. I wonder if the pressure of all this will start to wear on Caitlin and make her want to walk away. It would not surprise me at all.

Instead, no one cares about the WNBA or women's basketball. You put Caitlin Clark on the Olympic women's basketball team, and even if she plays for one minute, the crowd goes nuts, and eyeballs will watch. You are looking at this from a total team perspective. That's myopic. The team needs three centers, four forwards, and five guards. It can be argued that Clark is more deserving than one of the centers or forwards, but she is not better than Gray, Loyd, Plum, or Ionescu--and Taurasi was always going to be on this team, just as LeBron was always going to be on the men's team despite his age and declining stats. Why is no one mentioning the glaringly obvious fact that the Olympic team has ALWAYS included at least 3 young players usually under 26 who had entered the WNBA since the last Olympics? Taurasi & Stewart were both on the Olympic team their rookie years, so they never had to "earn" their spots or "prove" themselves prior to joining the Olympic team. Those young players never play much, but it gets them used to the process & ensures you always have players w/experience for the upcoming Olympic game. And except when injured or not an American citizen, every Olympic team has also included that years #1 drafted rookie. The only exception was 2012 when Nneka Ogwumike along with Candace Parker were snubbed. They were also both snubbed in 2016 also despite Nneka being the reigning MVP that year (Geno was the coach both times & greatly favored UConn alum). But even the 2012 Olympic team still had the #1 drafted rookies for the 3 years prior. So why is this the ONLY year the Olympic team chose to not have any young players who had joined the league since the last Olympics on the team? It is hard not to think it is a snub because the other players didn't want CC on the team. And I also wonder, if those players didn't want CC to have the opportunity to showcase how well she could have played with some of the best players in the league vs her current situation in the WNBA on one of the worst team w/a horrendous coach.

From Vietnam, my 2 daughters really want to watch Caitlin Clark in Olympic . Since Olympic televise basketball

I think this is great for Clark. She needs some rest and time to improve her game. She'll be just fine.

Who was on the 1992 men’s “dream team”? A college player named Christian Laettner. Who should be on the 2024 women’s Olympic team? It’s a no-brainer. Caitlin Clark. I will not watch a minute of USA basketball this year!! I boycott this ridiculous decision. 😢 If CC was there I would watch every game just to see her play…however many minutes they would give her. Join me and announce your boycott.

Love, Christine Brennan fellow Toledo native, but for Christ's sakes 4 and 1/2 minutes of six tooting her own horn.

I liked knowing the context of her background .... It gave her credibility compared to just the common talking head on KZbin.

I'm sick of Caitlin Clark. Name one Player on the Olympic Roster that she should replace.

The real reason is the veterans are afraid and jealous that Caitlin is sucking up all the endorsement dollars. The Olympus will have special commercials who will appear in those commercials? Jealous veterans or Caitlin. The team chemistry is import. Let us not forget Dianna T. has two teamsters on the team. Dianna does not like Clark. Chemistry would be a real problem. You know the cliche “Old Guys Rule”. In women’s basketball, “Old Gals Rule”. Or, so it seems!

Hadn't thought of the commercials. Imagine Nike run a commercial & it's cc face on the big screens, them girls will feel some type of way!!!! 🅓🅐🅜🅝

@@iubitnunes , for Diana T, it’s her fifth and last Olympic Games; she wants to be the face of the team without having to share the stage with a rookie.

It would be fitting if every State Farm, Gatorade, etc. advertisement on NBC’s coverage of the 2024 Olympics featured Caitlin Clark. It won’t happen, but part of me thinks it should.

The women’s basketball committee selects the roster. This includes South Carolina coach and former U.S. coach Dawn Staley, LSU assistant Seimone Augustus, Old Dominion coach Delisha Milton-Jones, Connecticut Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti and WNBA head of league operations Bethany Donaphin. These are the women that can't help themselves from losing out on the biggest boost of revenue for their sport, with worldwide media coverage. These are the women that let their hatred for a newcomer get in the way of the easiest decision to make. They know she is going to blow up the record books and they can't handle that. They also know they made the biggest mistake of their lives.
