@ToastyKen3 ай бұрын
Iran actually lost to Morocco, not Thailand, but the rest is right. And this is why they need to stop blaming teams when you set up the wrong incentive structure in a tournament. This is a solved problem. In a case like this, with 4 team groups, you just make them mini double elimination instead of round robin. Then every game has stakes, though at the expense of the better teams playing fewer games, which is arguably worse for spectators. Tournament organizers need to either stop using round robin, or stop whining like a team is being unsportsmanlike for trying to win the tournament.

We, as a species, are struggling to find a fair alternative event to put into the Pentathlon because it took us THIS long to realize that equestrian riding is only available to those who can afford it and also that such an event has little to do with human feats of athleticism and is more focused on how better or worst one horse is to another.....For us to settle on sensible rules if we've only just realized in recent years that horse riding is both expensive and has more variety that's dependent on the horse rather than the humans involved........I'd give it about 382 more years before all tournament committees actually acknowledges that there's a problem with their current setup and that there might be a better alternative.

Pretty easy solution for that league, just let the winning team decide which spot they take. In the rare instances where losing would be better for seeding, the winning team still wins.
@occasionalskeptic3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that wouldn’t solve the problem. If that rule were in place then it would have to be applied to teams in the other brackets as well; meaning they could choose which seed they would take as well. The seed each team would choose would depend on what seed the teams from the other brackets chose, leading to an impasse.
@HCMCDrives3 ай бұрын
Nooo. That would be applied to everyone, then the other group would just switch, this starting a never ending switch-a-thon
@Clairvoire3 ай бұрын
@@occasionalskeptic If they take turns, it shouldn't be an issue. Seeding is designed to give the top seed the easiest match, so letting the top regular-season seed select their opponent first, and the second seed selecting second, etc... repeating for each level of depth the tournament has, seems reasonable. I suppose there's prolly issues with it though that I'm not seeing, my comment was a pretty knee-jerk reaction to this kinda match throwing.
@seantimmons59003 ай бұрын
I don't know anything about how the tournaments are set up but if there's seeding... top seed from one bracket should play lower seed from bracket b. If they are so incapable of creating seeds that teams are losing kn purpose, that would be on the seeding committee.

Unfortunately, this happens often in WC/Euro Soccer too. Recent example (Euro 2024) is when Romania and Slovakia both qualified if they drew. Italians are still pissed off at Sweden v Denmark from Euro 2004. "The neighbours only needed to draw 2-2 to eliminate Italy but Morten Olsen and Tommy Soderberg were in defensive mode, with the Dane saying: "That's ridiculous. Don't speak about that. We are honest people. We are going out to win the game and that's all. [Italy] can speak about these things but not Denmark and Sweden. We are going honestly for a result." Final Result: Sweden 2 - Denmark 2

I'd argue losing a tournament on purpose is pathetic. (which is what winning the game would lead to) In fact, in this case it's exactly what happened: Iran won this game and then immediately lost to Morocco in the round of 16. France meanwhile lost this game but beat Thailand and Paraguay and made it to the semifinals. I'd argue it's more important to win the tournament than win the game. It's no different than gaming the system in more minor things like an intentional walk in baseball, or taking a knee or spiking the ball in football. If the incentives are misaligned, it's the fault of the tournament structure, not the team. There are ways to solve this by, for instance, having the group stage be double elimination instead of round robin, so teams have incentive to win every game.
@seantimmons59003 ай бұрын
Teams consistently tank. Baseball teams rest players. Soccer teams draw games against weak opponents. Something about losing battles and winning wars.

I'm not justifying or defending one side or the other, but the thing about trick plays is that they work once every 3 or so generations and they work well once. They're those kinds of things where it's like, "Nah, that's like 0 IQ effort there. There's no way anyone would fall for that." But then as time goes on, more and more focus goes to different things and that concept of, "idiotic no-brainer trick play that a 4 year old could pull off in the video game version of the game" escapes everyone's mind. Netherland's 11 was probably thinking, "I'm going to steal the ball from Canadian 12. I WILL steal it or at the very least she's not going to score on my watch!" and she zoned out. Basically she auditioned for the role of main character in her own little story arc and forgot there's an entire game going on around her. Easy to do when you're down in such a large score deficit and you feel like you can do better. Problem with all of that was that her efforts rallied the majority of the Netherland's defense to back her up and they focused on the intense action between 11 and 12 that they forgot that there was supposed to be a ball involved. Again, it's really simplistic to a degree where one can adequately classify it as a stupid trick play. No one else in lacrosse in the major league will be able to pull this off and this trick play will probably percolate down through the leagues. We'll see it happen at a collegiate level, then a high school level, and finally a pee wee level, and then it'll get shelved for about 20 years before it's played again. Look at just about any other sport with the trick plays and it is a "down stream" effect of a pro team will pull it off, a few years down the line after it's a great memory, a college team will pull it off. A few years later, a high school team will do the same. Then some over ambitious dad will try to get a bunch of 5 and 6 year olds to do the same thing. It's either that or rules get changed to officially make the trick illegal like in the case of Ross Chastain's wall ride NASCAR finish. Regardless, I think we all know what happened to the Netherland's Women's Lacrosse team after this. They've probable gone through the ringer to keep their focus more on the ball than on a single player. As far as France's futsol team.....I mean, it's never good to assume or disparage an entire nation, but you can't really claim supremacy when you're dominating "non-competition". Again, it's not great to disparage people, but I'm going to pick on the Carolina Panthers for a moment. Partially because they have a bit of a track record and partially because my nephew is a diehard Panthers fan. Maybe this'll spark something in them or maybe this'll just be another joke for the holidays. But it'd be like the Panthers suddenly claiming a undefeated streak when their entire schedule was nothing but high school teams. Would that REALLY look all that impressive? I'm not saying Thailand's (or was it Taiwan?) team is the equivalent of a high school football team in this, but it definitely feels like France decided to punch down, which takes away from their prestige. So even if they win, that's like wining gold in your class room chess tournament. It's not much to brag about, especially when you threw your chances to go to nationals because the prospect of the competition may or may not have intimidated you. It's also not a tactic if you're running away from a challenge to look good in the end. There's only pride on the line and if you're trying to defend it with empty victories under the guise of "stratagem and tactics" then you're wasting your breath and sullying your pride. A challenge was thrown at you and you ran away from it when all that was on the line was your pride.
