It's Seki Sensei alright? I notice his sclera is visible below the iris, it is identified with the term Yin Sanpaku & is associated with a physical imbalance of the body. Over the few months I learned a lot with Sensei and hope that all is well...

I like how Seki Sensei calmly explains how "no legs strikes" is just a rule in Kendo competition. It's competition rules like this that make martial arts look less effective by those who don't know and understand better. This is why we have the phrase, "no holds bared" in a real fight. In truth and REALITY nothing is off limits in a fight to the death...or life. Some martial artists, like Seki Sensei, teach the things needed to survive a fight up unto killing your opponent if necessary. Like YOU said Shogo, even a strike with a steel stick can end a fight. Weapons of any kind do FAR more damage than people have been lead to believe in movies and TV shows.

I was very impressed at how the henka showed near the end demonstrated a simple rule: when in doubt, revert to basic movements, and generate responses from them. Opponent cuts to waist: taisabaki to avoid. Opponent doesn't follow-through: taisabaki to jam them and tie them up. Applications of the basics are endless.

I particularly enjoyed the "What if...??" section at the end. I found it very enlightening and I hope you continue to include those segments in your future videos.

Shogo san, do you ever sleep 😮 I need some of your energy! We can't get enough of our Ryu and to be part of history and seeing it being made is priceless. And how kind and thoughtful of Master Seki to think about the people with bad knees. But having watched this video it would seem many Samurai in the past had bad knees 😳 Thank you so much 👍Take care. Stay safe 🙏 John and Kate

Something to consider for future content, one thing that would be very interesting, given the unique perspective of this system, would be reaction videos, where Seki Sensei comments on demonstrations of other styles, from other Martial Arts systems. It would be interesting to see circumstances where he might draw comparisons to the systems he represents, or suggest what their way of responding would be if different.

In fencing, especially for epee and saber (sometimes, some people target the entire body for saber), we have two techniques against leg attacks called [stop thrust] or [stop cut]. You withdraw your front leg while simultaneously extending the weapon arm to nail the other person's arm or face; it's essentially a [counteroffensive action] since it takes place in [one tempo]. If you need to withdraw your leg further, you can bring your front leg further back. For 1:55, it makes sense that the withdrawn of leg and attacking are two separate actions due to the position of the weapon. For 3:50, it is a bad mistake on the attacker to increase distance and not simultaneously attacking when withdrawing leg. 4:55 counters this with [compound attack], but the attacker hesitates in his attack, allowing for the compound attack to happen. A [two tempo action] can be defeated by either a [two tempo action] or even an [one tempo action]. In epee, it is GRINDED in your brain that you [stop thrust], to counter the leg attack by withdrawing your front leg while simultaneously extending the weapon arm to nail the other person. I find it is weird that they are not doing a stop thrust or cut since it is a bad idea to do a [two tempo action] against [simple attack] to the leg. For 5:20, making someone's blade busy so that you can attack their leg is my favorite. Since a [simple attack] to the leg can be easily defended, you can flex hard on the opponent by attacking their leg as a [riposte] to your [parry].

Thank you Seki Sensei for this Kata. I would not have thought of using a Wakazashi this way to block an attack and then return with a fatal blow like this. The videos are very intuitive and I really like the step by step process to teach us this way. 関先生、この型をありがとうございました。 若指をこのように使って攻撃を防ぎ、このような致命的な一撃で返すとは思いませんでした。 ビデオは非常に直感的で、このように段階的に教えてくれるプロセスがとても気に入っています。

Shogo can you ask to Seki Sensei what others aspects of the Japanese culture he like? For example I'll like to see you two drinking tea in the traditional way, or go to some place where you two enjoy Sensei's favorite meals. The idea is hear from him cool anecdotes, memories from when he was a kobudo student. You get the idea, know more of the man, what enjoy from Japanese culture, how martial arts change his life, what from his master live within. Thanks!!

The more I watch these videos with the katas the more parallels I'm able to draw between these techniques and many I've seen in HEMA, particularly Fiore. There are many of these wakizashi techniques that seem so similar to Fiore's dagger system and of course so many techniques with the katana that are strikingly similar to plays from Fiore's longsword system. It's incredible to me seeing two systems develop very similar techniques like a kind of universal cohesion within swordsmanship.

@Tunturisorsa Жыл бұрын
People leaving these kind of comments to kata don't really understand what kata is for. Kata is not for practicing static situations and recognizing when those happen in combat. It is to practice movements and different reactions to what the enemy could do and drilling those into muscle memory. Then you can use a technique or a part of it when it is useful. Sparring with a partner is obviously useful there.

There are plenty of dangerous one-armed fighters. Not so many dangerous one-legged fighters. Old friend of mine who is an excellent traditional Japanese swordsman was helping students who were going to do randori with yari and naginata specialists. They had to get used to protecting their legs.

I grew up doing different martial arts for years... Landed on boxing. Did it for like 5 or so years... The one thing I first learned about boxing, especially when you do it for a few months, is that there are levels to it. The people who say: if this or if that... well maybe the opponent just detonantes a nuclear bomb... These Kata's are just one piece of many... How many for the katana alone? They dont always work all the time in every way. When you throw a punch, does it always land? The kata helps with training, awareness, muscle memory, reaction time, and so on... Secondly, who even sword fights anymore? The chances of even being in that situation is so nil... So people need to just see it and learn from it... Musashi is probably the best example of how styles and form can be broken for a win... Like showing up late for a duel. Thirdly, you need to know these kata's so that you can break them... You can't just swing a sword randomly... against someone with mild experience, a brand new novice will most likely be sliced in combat... Anyway. Love the channel. Got addicted and now what a Katana (again!)
