That's because 'horde' derives from the turkic word 'ordu', meaning a camp of nomadic people. It originally designated a lifestyle, without any reference to how many people were living it. It didn't take on its current meaning in European languages until the 17th century

​@@chicc73 You're quite correct: that is the plain meaning of the word in modern Turkish, which has undergone considerable evolution from the 16th/17th century form that gave the word 'horde' to European languages. I am no expert in the Turkic language family, (or Turkish, the language of modern Turkey, for that matter) but from a little research it seems that within Ottoman Turkish, the version of the language spoken up until the linguistic reforms of Kemal Ataturk's government, the word's meaning shifted from 'a nomadic camp' generally to 'the royal camp,' the camp of the Ottoman sultan. By this time the Ottomans were no longer themselves nomadic, and the camp only came into being when the Ottoman sultans went to war. So 'royal camp' gets connotations of specifically 'war camp,' and over time it loses the connection with the war camp of the sultan and becomes a general term for a military camp or outpost. This is where the city of Ordu on the Black Sea gets its name apparently, from its origins as a permanent military outpost. This process of linguistic evolution continued into modern times, when the sense of a 'camp' was lost entirely and the word simply came to mean 'army' in modern Turkish.

@@benjaminrobertson2990 Dude Ordu or Orda is not only a Turkic name, you should use a more neutral terms like Nomadic in general, You guys always forget about the Mongolic side of things. Turks and Mongols lived together before they got the name Mongols or Turks, Mongols and Turks exchanged cultural things alot through out the history, Golden Horde is Tatar-Mongolic and it has almost too little connection to Oghuz Turks. Kiphack Turks(Kazakhs,Uzbeks,Tatars) are more suited for your claimed Nomadic Turkic cultures than Turkish Ottomans Orda(Which Mongols still use today is should be conjoined word for Nomadics) As for Turkish* its a different story, most people are Kurdic,Greekish,Indo European and Anatolian mixed people with mostly Arabic Persian Culture with Turkic language only! to be brutally honest no offence.
