I live in Australia and spent a number of years in Fiji. I have always liked chickens, various different breeds with their unique qualities. I like what you are doing, attempting to breed chickens that are good foragers, with a degree of productivity in eggs and meat with the ability to defend themselves against predators. Sensible, wise, something that till watching your videos I thought no one was interested in. The kind of thing that I would very much like to do, but don't have the resources and now live in town. Please keep on with it, surely there is a need for this type of chicken in many parts of the world. When I did keep chickens in Australia, common predators were foxes, hawks and ravens. In Fiji it was hawks but the mongoose were devastating. You have beautiful birds sir, blessings upon you, your family and your birds, well done.

I am anxiously awaiting the "wild" fowl video. I live up north, and while we don't have a lot of snakes, we have hawks, foxes, and coyotes. Ever since I found your videos, I've been considering a more wild 'buffer zone' flock of some sort of game chicken. We've got dogs which do a good job, but considering some more flighty birds at the edge of the property that would have a better chance.

I recently picked up a beautiful 25% Asil 50% Albany 25% red quill rooster to use for making better survival chickens on my land. I am planning on crossing him with some red star hens to try and improve their hardiness and survivability traits. I cannot thank you enough for your information you provide in these videos.

I got one I can film. The milk cow went kaput, but not before dropping a half-zebu heifer. The little calve fended for itself at a month old, no bottle feeding from me. And is now a pretty little red and grey heifer. Tough little thing.
@quailjailss
@quailjailss Жыл бұрын
@@Florida_Bullfrog awesome to hear the heifer is doing good. Do you know what happened to the jersey?
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog Жыл бұрын
Possibly mastitis or gut parasites. She started wasting away after she calved. She was eating like a hog too. I was even giving her grain, but it was as if she was starving. She was making plenty of milk. She finally laid down and wouldn’t get back up for days. I fed and watered her in place and finally put her down.
@quailjailss
@quailjailss Жыл бұрын
@@Florida_Bullfrog I am sorry to hear that. She was a pretty little jersey. I’ve always heard Bahia doesn’t have enough protein to support dairy animals, whether it’s dairy cows, dairy goats, or dairy sheep. Wonder if that played into it as well or was it just after she calved? Jerseys are great, but they come with their own set of problems. People don’t breed them like they used to. My grandpas jerseys growing up were completely different animals than what I see today. Anyway, hope to see the heifer at some point. I think you’re set on zebu, which is great, but you might be happier with a Dexter/zebu cross when raising for beef
@quailjailss
@quailjailss Жыл бұрын
@@Florida_Bullfrog I’m also interested in hearing when this heifer first goes into heat. Jerseys mature super early and zebu tend to not come into heat until 2 years old. She’ll probably be somewhere in between.

Whenever I took my Egyptian rooster crossed it with a red star hen The Offspring they just as good as the red star with Great Big O tannish White eggs. I've been cross-breeding the Egyptian chicken into my flock for about 3 years now everything I cross it to comes out amazing. Also came across some research don't know if it's exactly true or not but I think the Egyptian chicken is Sri Lankan junglefowl. I'm having so much fun with this breed after watching your educational shows it made it that much funny and now you have some I've been waiting for this video LOL excited for you.

Possibly. I don't ship birds or eggs anymore in the mail. I do sometimes sell, trade, or give them away to people local to north Florida. What few extras I have this year are spoken for, but as time goes by I'll probably have a lot more. As I get my breeds nailed down to the genetics I want them to have, I'll probably look for people to host flocks of particular bloodlines.

I don't think that a rooster that kills it's rival or his offspring is natural or necessity, respectfully,a natural feral flock has dominant,and submissive roosters living and let live.
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog Жыл бұрын
What you’ll notice in many urban feral flocks is there will only be one rooster with long spurs, and the rest will have little nubs with small points. The roosters will small spurs aren’t truly mature yet. A rooster doesn’t hit his prime until he’s at least 2 years old. Some breeds aren’t there until 3 years old. That’s when the drive to fight to the death kicks in. That mature rooster will kill other mature roosters but only boss around young roosters. Also, feral flocks are often intermixed with laying breeds of various types that have had the natural fight drive deadened. When evaluating feral chickens, you might be looking at some that are less game or junglefowl and more coopfowl. But in a state of nature, the wild chicken suffers no rivals.
