Terry Griffiths. Alex Higgins. Eddie Charlton. Dennis Taylor. Terry was pretty decent at clearances. Wish i had more of the Higgins-Griffiths match.

Showcases Perrie Mans' greatest strength (potting) and his greatest weakness (cue ball control) at the start there. Great upload! I recall staying up late secretly on a school night to watch the end of the Charlton match. Great championship.
@andrewharman7875 жыл бұрын
@montgomery15 It is quite striking how quickly Mans faded after reaching that 1978 final, despite winning the Masters in 1979 (without making a 50 break!) Agree on Terry's technique. Was he unlucky that Steve Davis came along when he did? I often wonder who would have won WCs if there had been no Davis and I think Griffiths would have won a few more, as would Thorburn. Yet I do think that Griffiths in the early 80s had the capability to beat Davis more than he did and there was something of a psychological barrier for him.
@chrisbland69425 жыл бұрын
Yes, except from a surprise victory over Steve Davis at the ‘81 Masters, Perrie never again reached the same heights. I think by the time of the 80’s boom came along, the other top players had sussed him out and his devastating potting was no longer enough to compensate for his lack of break building polish.

The match against Charlton was an epic. With Reardon, Spencer and Higgins all beaten, Eddie must surely have thought it was his time at last.
@RB747domme5 жыл бұрын
Chris Bland I agree, with Terry being an outside bet.. and Charlton being 49 years old. It was certainly Charlton's last chance. He was never able to repeat that epic snooker in future tournaments, and faded away in the 80s. Once Steve Davis was on scene, many of these old timers never stood a chance.
@chrisbland69425 жыл бұрын
Clint Tapper Eddie did reach the last 4 again in 1982 (aged 52!) but by that time he was certainly the outsider - the other 3 left being Reardon, Higgins and White.

Couldn't remember an image previously of an un-bespectacled Dennis Taylor. You could see, even at that middle age, he had that steely grit which helped him in 85.

Remember Charltons miss with the half butt like it was yesterday. Had forgotten he was 17/16 up with a great chance to go two up with three to play. This was his last real chance to win the tournament as although he got to the semi finals three years later it was unlikely he would have beaten either White or Higgins in the final
@TheKimgower3 жыл бұрын
Anybody else notice that the speed of the tables are faster nowadays and the players have more control of the que ball . Thoroughly enjoyed a trip back to 1979, when I was 21. David Vine also did a good job as an interviewer.
@wilfy77442 жыл бұрын
Were the balls slightly larger or heavier? I think the standard today is significantly better.. the potting was good back then but cue ball control wasn’t. Also players today are more attacking.

Griffiths so very lucky in the 35th frame. It was Eddie’s last realistic chance to take the title, and he would surely have mopped up Taylor in the final. Along with Jimmy White, Charlton was the best professional champion the game never had.

Mr Terry Griffiths who had shown his skills in Singapore in 1989 clearing twice the whole table of balls with one cue a greatest player with his pocketing and placing skills and no one of Singapore top gamblers and bookies dare not take the challenge of clearance with one cue. He was with Mr Dennis Taylor the current World Champion, Mr Steve Davies and he himself whereas Mr Steve Davies was showing of his three ball billards break. I was there watching him and Mr Steve Davies showing off their skills. I salute them for their kind contribution to show their skills to Singapore Snooker players in Singapore Recreation Club Billard and Snooker Room. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGnOeaF5oLNkm9ksi=au6OKs_ImL07WH-m

Had Higgins won that decided against Terry he’d have had a great opportunity of winning his second world title. I have no doubt at all he’d have been far too powerful for Taylor at that time. As for Charlton, who knows - maybe he’d have had the tactical game and stamina to frustrate Alex over a best-of-37 frames? Alex never liked playing Charlton in those days - after Eddie had slaughtered him 23-9 in the 1973 semi-final.
@markcackett52765 жыл бұрын
No doubt in my mind as a Higgins fan he would of gone on to win the title this year he lost 6 black ball frames in this Griffiths match,in the late 70's early 80's he would of almost certainly beat Charlton in the semi's and then Taylor in the final !

Commentary said that it was a cruel game 52:50. But I think Terry intentionally went for the reverse double - chanced his arm and got it.
@chrisbland69425 жыл бұрын
Terry said in his book "Championship Snooker" that it was a fluke. He'd intended to double the brown up behind the black but misjudged the angle. By the way, the commentator was the great John Pulman.

2 bits of Griffiths trivia. 1) He never beat Hendry in a pro tournament 2) He never made a 147. Not even in practise.
@mjt_snooker17045 жыл бұрын
He also finished his match against Higgins here with a break of 107 in the deciding frame. I think the only other time a century has been made in a deciding frame at the Crucible was Ebdon vs White in 1996. (Unless this has happened in the last couple of years.)
@slothfromthegoonies82015 жыл бұрын
His style was typical of his era, very defensive, not looking to build big breaks. Davis and Hendry would change that.

If Mans coudn't make more than the very occasional 50 break way back then how on earth would he be capable of making a barrage of big breaks today playing at a pace of completing 4 frames per hour to compete well with today's pros.

How can anyone say Alex was great. Don't get me wrong, he was one of the best, but technically speaking, his cueing was shit, probably the worst I've seen, spastic, inconsistent, he lifts his head too early, no backswing, rarely any follow through, cue ball positioning careless to say the least, risky shot selection, etc. Reardon was miles away in technical aspects. Guess what snooker needed was some rock and roll idgaf attitude.

Alex was, in the words of Steve Davis, the only true genius snooker ever produced. He virtually made the modern game. Before higgins turned up you had ray Reardon, John Spencer, and Eddie Charlton and a few other professionals. Don't get me wrong, in a technical sense they were all more precise than higgins. But who gives a shit about that? Higgins made snooker interesting, something I think only he truly achieved. Although he didn't win that often, he was fun to watch, something that cannot be said of 99% of current and past players. If you cannot see this, then I pity you
