I remember i purchased some second hand copies of Traditional Karate Magazine in India in 1990, when i was a teenager. That was the time when i was mesmerised by Bruce Lee and use to read about different martial arts all the day. I hail from a very remote area in North India near the Himalayas. There was no martial school in my town. finally a Taek-won-do school opened in my town and i was lucky to get trained for 1.5 years. I completed my schooling but kept practising on my own. Ticky Donovan, Bay logan, Terry O Niel, Bill Valance, Dominic Valera and dickie Wu use to be the most popular characters of that magazine. Good to see this video after 3 decades. I still posses those 30 year old Traditional Karate magazines.

I remember training under Bob Poynton in the red triangle in Liverpool in the 1980s and 1990s. Excellent man.

Terry isn't well known in the US but I was privy to a story of his I heard on youtube video. Being a martial art street fighter myself I know I if I had a chance I would walk away a wiser person from the pearls of wisdom I could learn from this man. Not only does he sound like a great fighter but a humble man as well. The epitome of a true warrior. Keep the samurai spirit alive and well Terry. Oss

Terry O'neill used to be my Sensei back in the eighties at the period he ran his dojo in his Karate shop in Liverpool town centre just before we all moved out to a temp sports gym around Everton area...say hello if you were around in that period..esp Paul Carter.

picdriver The Samurai Martial Arts Centre, not far from the Museum and Walker Art Gallery. I used to be a student but at a grading examination he was quite critical of me, saying my legs were too skinny for a 14 year old, so I got the hump and never went back. Still, I ended up taking up boxing later on when I was at university and even won a BUSF gold medal.

Trained at the Samurai for years. Some great lads there - Tommy McNally , Dolphin Davies , Robbie Price , Eddie McDonough , Mike Read , Gary Black , Jimmy Diamond , Mark Dolan to name but a few. Not only great Karate lads but under Terrys coaching and instruction could really perform in the street when required. Shame when the Samurai closed and we moved to the Vernon Sangster sports hall. Training was equally as hard but I missed having a proper Dojo to train in. Fantastic memories !!

Hi Colin. He would walk down the line while taking a session the week before he graded you and snap punch to see that you where thence for the hit He had done this too a couple in front of me and walked passed me. I relaxed and he spun and kicked me in the stomach I just tended in time. He mumbled good And walked on. I was on a high from that comment. One of my hero’s from all that took sessions from the red triangle who came to take us in St Helens privilege to have been trained by so many greats. From the 70s. Had my neck broke in 81. Billy Higgins rushed on and saved my life. Left paralysed for a long time. Never got to thank him. Anyone reading this and can pass on my thanks. Please do so.

its a training video,you would find out (how unrealistic bullshit) it is if you kicked off in a night club where terry is on the door. yes even at his age, the man is still on the doors. Terry Oneil a true fighing legend.oss

@MrCubababy I was talking with my sensei about Terry O'Neill and him being on the doors in Liverpool the other day, he told me that this guy was trying to get into a bar and Terry refused him. So the fool started poking him in the chest and after a couple of warnings Terry caught his poking finger and snapped it haha. This is just what I hear. I love the guy's modesty too, last year at the nationals I spoke to him to get an autograph and called him sensei he said "call me terry" love it KUGB!!

@ghettoaga Terry O'Neil will be the first to tell you that Shotokan karate works, along with guys like Frank Brennan and Elwyin Hall. They will also tell you about how badasses were their Japanese instructors. But I'm kind of intrigued about your Wing Tsun argument, since you're using it as an example for effective MA...but I guess you'd come back with the "Bruce Lee" card and that would be lame.

Terry O'neill was my teacher....also met Frank Brennan....scuse the message...going way back into the eighties lol.

@rtyush Maybe it's a chudan barai? Nothing wrong with that. Chudan barai is more useful anyway.
@deadguy2914 жыл бұрын
@ghettoaga You keep saying that such and such system are more effective than Shotokan, but I have yet to see a WT practitioner as an MMA champion (I'm just following with your previous argument). Also, you are misguided if you think that Shotokan is only about high kicks and board breaking (hell, I've been training for quite a while and I've never done any board breaking).
@deadguy2914 жыл бұрын
@ghettoaga I like many things about Shotokan but I know it has some limitations, so what? there's no complete style and I'd rather do Shotokan right than start mixing stuff without proper understanding. That been said, I also like boxing a lot and I've found that my karate training has benefited from it. If you like WT or MT more power to you, but do some research or better yet, go train with someone serious before criticizing other styles.

@rtyush Hi Rytush Sorry I have gone over and over and I just cant see anything wrong with it. Terry Oneil is a big huge man in build and height so maybe its just his stature that gives you the impression the Gedan Barai is to high. Even if it is from a high position I can imagine you could go from that position to do a gedan barai or to uchi Uke if nessercery.Im not as excactly going to question it with him seeing he towers over me like a monster lol.
@deadguy2914 жыл бұрын
@ghettoaga aaaaah come on! now you're using the "that Y figther was no good when he fought X fighter" argument. I hate when people start using MMA as an example for everything related to Martial Arts. But, I'll answer anyway: first, Machida defeated several high ranked fighters including Evans, Franklyn, Silva, etc. in their primes. By your own logic, Shogun would be a shot fighter since he lost to Griffin who lost to Evans who lost to Machida. Then again, it doesn't work that way...
@deadguy2914 жыл бұрын
@ghettoaga mmmm you're using the mma argument...well, by your own logic, if Machida got beaten by Shogun and therefore Shotokan is useless, then wrestiling, BJJ, MT are also useless since Machida defeated fighters who where experts in such styles. See? it doesn't work that way...So you're still trolling and failing to come up with an actual argument about the effectiveness of Shotokan techniques.

@ghettoaga: it's obvious you're trolling since you're using wing tsun and muay thai in the same sentence as the real thing...now go somewhere else with your trolling.
