Crews did the audition for the show, the producers didn't have a character for him in mind, but they liked Terry so much that they created a character for him, at first Crews actually rejected them but the producers named the character like him to convince him to play the part. The show actually took a lot from the actors to create the characters, for example the 99 chant was something Terry did during shooting that eventually came to the show, Andy Samberg and Chelsea Peretti are Friends since Childhood like Jake and Gina, Terry actually paints. The writers took a lot from the actors.
