@bikesgoodgasbad
@bikesgoodgasbad 3 жыл бұрын
vegan non extreme - cars are stupid. this could not be more obvious throughout the video. potentially damaging the plastic exterior of a planet and culture destroying machine is not equivalent to potentially killing a cyclist. drivers get mad and only have to move their foot half an inch to accelerate a 3k lb weapon, feeling tough because they’re shielded from the real world behind the windows. they get jealous and think not fair!! you have to obey the law!! but... why?

@terrybarentsen I finally trained on your compilation training video. I did Ana Puga and part of Erik Otto's clip. It was fun of course, riding through trafic and all. For those who will try, know that you have to pace yourselves by trying to match the cadence of the cyclist. Of course, without someone to properly tell you what effort level is required, well, you must push to the limit of your capacities. I did appreciate the little breaks, here and there, for instance at red lights, I kept pedalling but in a kind of recuperation mode. No way I could do the full 2 hours, not at my age, but I will keep on doing them. Thanks again for a different kind of training video.

This is great comment. My 2c: Whether riding on a trainer or in the actual city if curious, it’s a solid 20-25mph effort you gotta maintain on those big one-way Manhattan avenues, especially if you wanna keep catching those green lights, and additionally show cars you more than belong in their world - cause you’re only passing them once, you and outta sight shortly after that. It’s really flat everywhere until the mid Upper East and West Side neighborhoods but will still keep you breathing depending how often you have to spin it back up after sudden slow downs, as those cars you just passed wanna make the greens up ahead too. Still, building up the stamina to maintain and exceed regular traffic speeds is due the safest way to ride here because you’ll stay ahead and away from the unpredictable car/pedestrian mixtures of the road margins, left/right cross streets, and worst of all, any of the miscellaneous catch-all bins that run parallel to traffic on these avenues. They’re considered “protected” because they’re built between the sidewalks and rows of parked cars, forcing them to act as spillover and you as cars’ blind right-turn fodder if you were to strictly follow the laws. The NYC legal speed limit is 25mph everywhere except highways or if posted otherwise, and the lights are mostly timed to keep drivers from getting opportunities to greatly exceed it. Plus, lots of drivers zone out when waiting at red lights, so can you easily get a head start when you do have to stop along with them, mostly only needed at the crossing for the handful of large fast-moving two-way roads like 14th, 34th, and 42nd once you get the hang of it. Your biking effort level gets determined by how close you are to cars, but whether you want to keep passing them or get relegated to the margins and bike lanes is up to you. In the latter, things forcing you to slow and possibly stop are way more common and unpredictable, and once you’re comfortable in the middle of the road anytime you take a chance with these, probably trying to avoid a moment of car congestion, you’ll remember why you never even start riding here anymore. You only occasionally see some of these lanes in the Hotlines - it’s where potholes take longest to fix, doors of cars swing open while police, delivery trucks, and ride shares double park, pedestrians spawn at random and usually while staring at a phone, CitiBikers wobble at 10mph sometimes while taking a selfie and almost always with over-ear headphones in, waiters dart back and forth for our new here to stay outdoor dining system, and drivers (often with at least one of their eyes on a phone) in the main roadway traffic make right turns at any moment, pretty often without signaling - which I can’t blame them for, expecting them to see a bike moving parallel to them but behind not just their passenger side real paneling but a row of parked cars is why (most) of the stuff you see in these videos is literally just safer. It just also takes effort.
