your shredder comment actually matches pretty close to what red-wood would do to process this pack. They would discharge it so it is no harm of fire and send it on through the process. There recovering 90-95% of the cell material.

@@peterjohnson8106 That is an expense. Recycling grinders start big and get smaller as the material goes down the line to go from giant pack to dust in a series of steps instead of a single step. The foam would not need to be removed before grinding, but there is nothing that rules out tesla having a solvent for the foam that would let them remove the foam. If there are ports or holes that can be used to inject fluid into the foam, then these packs may actually be serviceable if you really wanted to do it. I have to imagine they do have a solvent extraction method to at least aid in pack testing and examination.

Makes you wonder if this was done intentionally to avoid cell pack level of repair complaints, so if there is an issue they can say you "have to" replace the entire pack...

Take a look at the pack from Vinfast (Vietnamese EV) . I believe they use a pre-moulded foam sheet with interference fit holes and press the cells in. Probably faster, neater and reversible?

That is the structural battery from Tesla. It's a load bearing part of the car. Seats are bolted onto it before it's placed in the car to speed up the production. I do not think the pack from Vinfast is structural.

Question, could Tesla squeeze more cells on the sides? Looks like some room from the black foam (possibly for crash), but is there any room outside the pack to move that farther out to get IDK an extra 4 to 6 rows? 6/24= ~25% more range.
@519Kustomz2 жыл бұрын
There is a bit of room but it would mess up the cell structure a bit. Outside packs could be something like 10 parallel but insides would still be 9p. Rumour has it that the chemistry is different on next years 4680 for energy density improvements. I think 8-10% better than it is currently.
@rogerstarkey5390 Жыл бұрын
@@519Kustomz The 4680 (as tested) actually had a downgraded anode (less silicon). It's likely that the first step when they ramp will be to run the 2170 anode material and the dry process Cathode, both of which will boost performance, with much more to come after that. They won't go for range (same quantity of cells) they'll go for a lighter pack with fewer cells that probably have better charge rate, any range gain will be weight related. . Their mission is to produce more vehicles.

@@519Kustomz I think it's more for structure and insult. You'll notice a weak spot in what would be the bottom of the cell. It's designed to fail and project any "energy discharge" straight through the bottom of the pack. This prevents heat build up adjacent cells, so no runaway "pack fire"

Thx for the video. Is there something like a double sided adhesive transparent tape that holds the FR4/glass fiber plate to the battery cell interconnections? Looks like that in the video, just need confirmation. How hard was it to remove that top plate from the cells?
@519Kustomz2 жыл бұрын
That transparent layer between the fiber plate and cell collectors looked like it isolated the main cell collectors from the bms layer. It did not appear to have an adhesive layer to it but it was mostly destroyed removing the fiber plate. So the layers went - top of the battery cells, cut out thin fiber isolating sheet, cell collectors, transparent sheet, bms circuit, thick fiber plate. Every positive battery terminal had a grey adhesive to further isolate and adhere the layers together before the entire thing was filled with the pink foam. The top plate was very hard to remove and ended up coming out in pieces because the pink foam is so bloody good!
