The tarriffs are certainly an interesting policy. Just because the Chinese government is currently pouring money into keeping costs low doesn't mean that they'll remain that way. Just like with every US tech company in the 2010s, low prices can be used as a trojan horse to establish market dominance, at which point they're free to raise prices when we're already accustomed to their products as part of our daily lives. It's important to ensure that a temporary price advantage doesn't lead to unfair competition. But it could also be argued that US companies are hiding behind tariffs to boost their quarterly profits while doing the absolute bare minimum to grow their EV markets, and will depend on tariffs to remain competive even if China ends all subsidies.
@VenomSnakee4 ай бұрын

The battery swapping isn't nearly as important as one might think when you realize that charging an EV is not 1:1 with filling a gas car and L2 charging during a fraction of the 99%+ of the time your car is parked is much better. Sure, if your living arrangements and surroundings lack good charging infrastructure, you're going to be forced to use fast chargers for daily driving, but in that case you sure as hell won't have readily available battery swapping infrastructure either so it's not a solution. There's certainly drivers who actually drive far enough frequently enough that it'd be a legitimate advantage for them, but they should probably just continue to drive gas cars at this phase of the technology.
@kyleb81174 ай бұрын
Yeah. I think the only people that would need that sort of feature would be things like Uber drivers. People who beat the crap out of their car and fast charge it to hell. It's really a non-issue otherwise.
@mlsasd64944 ай бұрын
i also dont think its scalable. Its great if its free when you get there, but as soon as two people are ahead of you you are there 15 min as well, just not plugged in. While this is also true for chargers, the infastructure is a lot simpler to scale for charging than it is for battery swaps, not to mention the capital cost of having all those batteries waiting to be swapped in. Also, a battery swap station can "run out" at which point there no longer is a fast way to get back on the road as the batteries are not fast charged while at the station to preserve battery life.

In Brazil we already had high import tarifs for cars in general. But the government decided to freeze this tariffs for electric cars for 1 years. This lead EVs to a huge increase in sales and made the other manufacturers hurry up the production. Now they brought the tariff back so they dont import the cars but produce it here. We have 2 big Chinese manufacturers starting huge operations here because of this.
@hastyscorpion4 ай бұрын
3:03 so these higher prices would not be considered inflation. Inflation doesn’t just mean “ prices go up”. Inflation is when there is no meaningful change in the real supply or demand but the money supply has increased so the nominal demand increases and prices go up. This is just a decrease in supply because you can’t buy from the entire market because of tariffs. So the goods are just literally more scarce.

The reason for tariffs is to correct trade imbalances by putting pressure on currency valuations. The classic way a trade deficit corrects itself is for the currency of the debtor nation to decline relative to the currency of the surplus nation. This currency adjustment tends to increase the cost of goods from surplus nations and decrease the cost of goods from debtor nations. China invests its surpluses in US Treasury Bonds. This prevents the Yuan from appreciating relative to the US Dollar. The result is a continuation of cheap Chinese goods. True, Chinese labor is abundant. But that too would change if the currencies were allowed to adjust.

I feel like countries might see massive subsidies in industries that aren't "just" meeting demand for a necessity as particularly hostile as well. It isn't much different from a chain business pricing out local competition to seize a larger part of the market share, if not establish a monopoly. From what I know Govt subsidies in general tend to be used to protect sectors that are considered important to keep alive within your own country, like the farming sector in the EU. In this case they're using the subsidies as a weapon to spread global influence.

Complaining about the Chinese government subsidizing EV’s is crazy considering selling government tax credits are an essential way Tesla sustained its business
@Easy2Peel3 ай бұрын
Though it’s fair to say that Chinese government did subsidise the ev industry substantially, the chief intention is not to export vehicles to America or Europe. China has a domestic market large enough to consume these cars, and you can tell from their designs; these cars are usually long wheel base sedans or luxury MPVs, none of these types are sold well elsewhere than China. Chinese ev industry serves more as a global ev parts supplier rather than car exporters.
@wyw2013 ай бұрын
Except Chinese automakers barely make money from domestic sales due to the level of competition. Hence the need to pursue higher margins elsewhere.

Don't look forward to much coming out of China, but I've been waiting for affordable cars for some years now and knew it would start with heavy competition from China. If they aren't "Made in China" quality, then this is a W idc what anyone says. These tariffs are a joke, honestly annoyed with failing US auto giants being kept alive by the government, in a fucking capitalist society. Harley did this in the '80s and Japanese manufacturers responded with insane V4 muscle bikes that skirted around the tariff and almost killed Harley... again. Obviously a lot harder in this situation for China, but these tariffs could just result in them making an even better product that 1) people REALLY want now, and 2) completely out-performs anything domestic or from Japan/Europe; which is what Harley did to themselves for years. Just look at the historical reliability and costs of a Harley vs a Honda or Suzuki. Japanese manufacturers had to be that much better and affordable to sway western demographics, which is what I really hope China does. Everything else they make can be shit, but god damn do I want their cars to succeed.

Sure there EV might not have the flashiest features like FSD or auto parking (yet), it's still much better than recent ICE cars at the same if not lower prices. Actually Chinese EV is so booming here since we have 0% tax for them (but with contract), and 100,000 baht subsidy from the government for most of them, so right now their price are much more affordable than Tesla and other EV model like kia (by some cost around just 50-70% when compared to the price ratio in the EU).

I know that governments take money from big oil so are putting down these tariffs for reasons other than the truth. I agree with tariffs, but t side with labor unions.

138 different EV companies competing for the same market? why not have only 1 mega corporation selling all the cars at high prices. pretty unamerican of them tbh
@benjaminmatheny66834 ай бұрын
Your take on why you see fields of abandoned EV cars is China is incorrect. You see those fields because of how the subsidies are implemented by the CCP. They get paid with every car produced, whether it actually sells or not. The subsidy may not cover the full cost of manufacture, but it means that once they get a production line up and running, they immediately put it on full output to try and start recouping costs, even if the demand for their vehicle isn't there.

I’m chinese. They are subsidized so hard per car produced, they dont even care about selling them or quality (car graveyards). When EV’s are not made to last, they are less environmentally friendly than any gas car (due to the increased carbon cost of producing new parts to replace bad ones)

Nah, Atriov is missing MAJOR issues for why we need a tariff. 1. China has a history of undercutting our industries till they don't exist and we can't compete. The govt gives shipping and tariff subsidies to undercut world marketplaces as a part of their plan to be the only world superpower 2. China EVs are all blowing up, and there are several several videos out there. 3. We can't compete with a lack of slave labor and ethics. They do 6 12 hour shifts as a base, and are still genociding the Muslim Chinese and keeping them as slave labor 4. EVs can be remotely controlled or turned off. Tesla did this on cannonball runs, and China will do this to kill select CCP vocal opposers or politicians 5. The reason WHY China needs to have more exports is if you don't have more exports and less imports then your country loses ALL its wealth causing extreme inflation. We have already experienced this over the last few decades, and this is why Trump focused so much on the Chinese trade deficit and the global trade deficit we have. This is also why we can't let them increase their trade deficit for their benefit, especially at our expense. 6. Everything in China is fake all the time, even if BYD has U.S. standards, which it never will, it is very easy to buy fake and faulty parts in China, for example Boeing's issues where they accidentally bought crappy metals in Mexico which were actually fake metals that China sold there.

The argument for putting tariffs on chinese EV is so stupid to me. Its like wanting to ban or handicap the top players in a sport because theyre just better than other competitors.
@todo96333 ай бұрын
Atrioc, you're wrong about the source of the fields of abandoned EVs in China. What actually happens is that Chinese EV manufacturers are given quotas they have to meet for sales, and also are given subsidies based on the number of sales they can make, so they start car rental businesses as subsidiaries and sell cars to themselves. That way even if they lose money, they're still getting a larger share of a finite pool of subsidies, thus depriving their competitors of funds. Then once they get the dough they just abandon the cars in fields to rot.
