Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Optimus robot: This will be the biggest product ever of any kind

Tesla hosts its 'We, Robot' event on Thursday at Warner Bros. Discovery's movie studio in Burbank, California. Elon Musk said the company has made a lot of progress on its Optimus robot and that it will eventually cost between $20,000 and $30,000. He said it will be able to "be a teacher, babysit your kids, walk your dog, mow your lawn, get the groceries...Whatever you can think of it will do." The robots walked among the crowd at the event.

My prediction is there will be different plans, 20k-30k is just the standard plan. If you allow your Optimus to feed back all data it collects back to Tesla, you'll get a reduced price. If you even sign up for a "robot teaching program" the price gets reduced further. The potential is enormous. With millions of humanoid robots deployed in all kinds of different environments, the data they collect will be extremely valuable for AI development, and maybe getting this data is even a necessary precondition for developing true AGI. Imagine you sign up for a program where per time unit of usage you have to teach the robot for a time like you would a child. Showing him how to do different things in your environment, naming objects, doing simple experiments, and most importantly answer a lot of questions. The better you are as a robot teacher, the more money you save probably. All this is then fed back to Tesla to become part of a huge real-world data-set that doesn't just include cold intangible internet knowledge, but interactions with humans of all sorts, what they find important, what they like and don't like, how they interact, how the world works. And training your systems on that, you get more and more human-like intelligence, leading us to AGI.

No one will be there to hear your final words, mark your exact time of death or even change you. Or, imagine you're a social worker, like a Hospice nurse. You've spent years studying in college, spent money on pursuing a career in helping and assisting the elderly, doing God's work for something you love. All of that is stripped away once the company you work for lays you off just to replace you with a robot that will be taking care of your patients for you. All your work has been for nothing as you are now unemployed and half the jobs that match your skillset have been taken by automated robots. This is not the future. This is dystopian.

It could easily be cheaper to support elderly people in their homes this way and free up workers. And imagine when it could function like Baymax. An in-house medic is certainly not bad either. I don't know what your job is, but if the average net income in the us is $54k, assumed you're working 40 hours a week, that's $26 an hour after taxes, which means you would have to work less than 1.200 hours to pay for it. That means when it has done 1.200 hours of chores, it will have been worth the time you spent working. Theoretically, you could work that bit more if you wanted to earn that much more money with the time you don't have to spend on chores. All theoretical until we see it actually do it, but if it becomes what Elon promises, it will definitely be something worthwhile.
