GRIP in Germany conducted a comparative test of pedestrian emergency braking systems for Mercedes, Tesla, and BYD vehicles. Here's a summary of the results in English: 1. Test Scenarios: - Static pedestrian on the road - Pedestrian crossing suddenly from behind an obstacle - Rainy conditions with reduced visibility 2. Results: - Tesla Model 3 (USA): 7.5 out of 9 points - BYD Seal (China): 5.5 out of 9 points - Mercedes EQB (Germany): 3.5 out of 9 points 3. Performance breakdown: - Static pedestrian test: All three vehicles performed well, scoring full points. - Crossing pedestrian test: * Tesla performed best, with consistent braking * BYD had mixed results, sometimes braking effectively * Mercedes struggled, often failing to brake in time - Rainy conditions test: * Tesla performed surprisingly well, even with camera-only system * BYD failed to detect the pedestrian in all attempts * Mercedes also failed to detect or brake for the pedestrian 4. Key takeaways: - Tesla's camera-based system outperformed the competition, even in challenging conditions. - BYD showed promise but struggled in adverse weather. - Mercedes unexpectedly performed poorly, especially in the more challenging scenarios. The test highlighted the importance of these systems in potentially saving lives, as approximately one pedestrian dies daily in traffic accidents in Germany. However, it also emphasized that drivers should remain vigilant, as these systems are not always reliable. Citations: [1] kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3Wzfmlpqapnhrc

It also probably matters what version of tesla they had as well. Teslas improve. I also don't think autobrake is the same stack as fsd so it might be quite a bit older.

I am on HW3 with v12.5.4.1 (model S Plaid) and, in the LA area, I never get any critical disengagement. The only disengagements I get come from planning mistakes which, after rerouting, would still allow the car to get to its destination if I did not disengage. I think, in my area, that it’s pretty much solved. With the addition of reverse and park, it will pretty much be robotaxi ready around here. V13 might be it. By the way, Waymo is operating here and they are not perfect. They just count disengagements (which are hidden by the absence of a driver) much more leniently.

The versions we get of FSD are not the bleeding edge of capability, very much small incremental improvements. These are Americans we’re talking about - we’re not responsible enough as a culture behind the wheels of our vehicles they definitely play it safe they definitely are confident if they have a robotaxi with no steering wheel. This is the most advanced, efficient, talented, genius automotive company the world has ever seen. I think they know what they’re doing. Other than timeline they’ve done everything they said they would - Cybertruck and semi weren’t gonna happen either, right?

@quantuminfinity4260 The last news Tesla gave is that it would be in 2025. But them not making the Roadster isn't because of technical difficulties, it's because it's a halo car and won't matter to their bottom line. Meanwhile Teslas sister company is catching rockets the size of a 23 story building, falling from the edge of space, with metal beams like a pair of chopsticks. Let Tesla cook.

@@jhunt5578 Space X is very impressive but not relevant to my point at all. I’m just call out an example where Tesla has indeed not delivered on a promise at all yet. Maybe they will. But it’s not yet. Like you said, it’s not because of a technical reason. It’s purely bottom line driven. So letting them cook is also not relevant. Even so I’d argue that it’s even worse because they have the capability to do what they promised, but won’t. Even worse because they decided after they started taking money for it that it’s not great financially, so they just won’t.

Unsupervised? Sooner rather than later. The recent 12.5 advances are so good I think the Tesla software team can probably now make a specific punch list of things to fix. So Elon said 'California and Texas next year,' but he was alone on stage... So maybe a year from now, partially unsupervised, like on the interstate (but no sleeping) A year after that (late 2026) Robotaxis in parts of California and Texas. Los Angeles won't be a problem. (FSD is already great anywhere I drive in L.A.) I think the next hurdle may be backing up. And add to the lists of reasons Tesla should advertise: Yesterday an electrician fixing computerized dock boxes (so no Luddite) where I dock my boat said he'd like to get a Tesla, "But I rent, so I can't install the solar panels." How is this possible? And I figured out why so many people have gushed to me about the E Hummer. TV ads during sports broadcasts. Not one of these people can afford a Model Y, they believe all manner of EV 'rumors,' and yet they know, and like, and CAN NAME so many features they like about the E Hummer. Those commercials are not just trying to sell Hummers, they'll also sell Bolts, and are preparing people for when GM can finally make a profit on EVs and starts cranking them out. I would say that in the past two years those E Hummer commercials just might be the most widespread positive education for EVs.

I drop off my kid to school daily. The traffic is so bad that you really don’t need a school sign to tell the car to slow down. Often I have to disengage to choose the faster lane to cut through other cars. 😅. And the FSD has set to Assertive in my 12.5.4.1. Can’t wait for this new update see if it’s improves in lane selection.

I'm still on 12.5.4 and I get the major delay at the first 4-way stop a block into the neighborhood. And then it zoom accelerates to 32 mph in a 25 mph zone where you would never want to do more than 25 due to narrowness, restricted sight around a tight curve, parked vehicles, kids playing, etc. I usually get my releases a short time after you get yours so hopefully 12.5.6 shows improvement in my area. 12.5.4 does show improvement in maintaining speed, but, in general, adherence to speed limits is so erratic around here that I am not sure if FSD will ever be able to deal with it. Once FSD is solved you can just share fun stories about your kids?

The Electrified YT channel's latest video, "This Is Unheard Of / Autonomous Regulations Changing? / GM Going Digital" has some interesting thoughts about NHTSA and vehicles without controls. Currently the manufacturer has to petition NHTSA for an exemption under the AV STEP program and even if granted, there is a pretty small number (2,500) vehicles that are allowed.

It does seem like training on edge cases now makes it better without regressing in other areas. And they are finishing up adding any remaining needed features. Then they will have a decent amount of time until the end of next year with their new supercomputer to train train train on edge cases. So I’m feeling quite optimistic they could get there by the end of next year with a system quite comparable to Waymo’s effectiveness. And then they’ll be getting much more data with more robotaxis working more hours which will quickly improve even more so it’s great by the time cybercab comes out. I’m very optimistic at this point. We’ll see how quickly training improves once they’re done with all the necessary features.

Tesla should add an option for people like you and any other Tesla owners that’s basically a go drive around, and if it helps you to map a certain spot that you don’t have in recent drives overall for Tesla data gathering, then go do that. And if you need to go around and around and try things multiple times, go do that as well. and then they could even have the car ask. How did I do right there? What did you think about that? Etc. and then it could show you the GF forces or give you a rating to be able to say did I wait too long was I too aggressive, etc.? And then that feedback considered just a report button to go back to Tesla.

@BigBen621
@BigBen621 37 минут бұрын
They don't. But some influencers, such as Whole Mars Catalog, live in areas of the country with a large concentration of Teslas to provide training videos, and so FSD performs better in these areas. I live in San Diego, and I'm not aware of any influencers here; but similar to LA and the Bay Area, there's a large concentration of Tesla here, and FSD has been working perfectly for me for several weeks-like being driven around by a professional chauffeur with my hands in my lap or on the armrests. It even does limousine stops at every stop, a skill I've tried unsuccessfully to master.

As I understand it, the difference between HW3 and HW4 are not really as big as people think. The biggest downside is that HW3 no longer has redundancy because they are now using both processors as compute. The dual processor HW3 config actually has slightly more compute than HW4 with redundancy. However being that HW4 is on a newer process node it likely gets slightly more performance for the same amount of raw compute. So they really are likely neck and neck with HW4 maybe slightly edging out HW3. Of note, HW3 actually also has double the memory. The camera resolution change on HW4 is nice but not likely super impactful for most things.

I've found that 12.3.6 tended to be less consistent in it's speed, often more in a state of speeding up or slowing down, and when it needed to slow down for a situation it wouldn't speed back up without an accelerator press. Essentially it was harder to get it to stay at the speed you want with just the accelerator. While 12.5.4.1 still has speed issues with no intervention, I've noticed that it does a much better job at staying consistent after you use the accelerator than its predecessor. I just wish that with the introduction of speed profiles it would err on the side of speeding up rather than slowing down knowing that it can't go beyond the speed the driver sets

@@variablenine For me, all v12 versions have had the "pedaling effect" where you can press the accelerator to boost it a few MPH over the speed limit but much like a bicycle, it'll slowly bleed off speed 1 MPH at a time until it is under the limit again. Rinse and repeat.

I should start making these but Downtown Detroit. I could also take FSD thru the hood on the east and west side too. 🤔

I still can’t comprehend how it would be able to deal with places like Korea town in LA where the super blind unprotected turns on every corner cause of parked cars. Even I have to be super cautious and feel out those kinds of situations and negotiate with other drivers

Maybe it will be super cautious and feel out those kinds of situations and negotiate with other drivers? It is learning from people driving in Koreatown. Or Seoul for that matter. When you see it driving there just fine, you will ask "but what about New Delhi rush hour? Mogadishu? I have driven on a few continents and in countries with various driving cultures, and as long as you keep cool and don't crash into something/someone things usually sort themselves out. Compare that to the thousands of people per year we are totally fine with being killed by human drivers.

@@chillguy2758 It doesn't have to be very high level, actually. It just has to fake it close enough that it works. Your "negotiations" with other drivers are not very deep and sophisticated, even if they feel meaningful. They go straight out the window if somebody does something unexpected anyway, since you are being vigilant and careful. Vigilant and careful is easy for a robot car. The rest is just creeping forwards and seeing how other cars/bikes/pedestrians react. After all, people can drive there in the middle of the night, too. Just like it figures out not to crash into the car going before its turn in a 4-way stop. Or not killing phone zombies wandering into the street without looking.

Man this is awesome, can't wait to get this on my vehicle. Just wait till V13! I think once we see that then people will be more accepting of unsupervised. Maybe this isn't going wide because they are confident and close to V13 coming out ? Otherwise I just dont see why this isn't going wide. I've watched many videos on this version and it looks great. thanks for the video man, keep up the good work!

I am wondering how this will conflict with current legislation. Right not texting and driving is illegal everywhere so can we assume California and Texas will have exceptions? To expand this more how will the police know I am using FSD?

I still have a feeling HW4 isn’t enough to do FSD. Elon said they they are making the Cybercab excessive, but I just don’t buy that. We’ve seen that same thing play out with HW3 to 4. I think for FSD a bumper camera is necessary. A radar might be needed, especially for poor visibility situations. And better computer might be needed, especially as we’ve seen how much of an improvement we’ve seen as they move to parameter models

Who would have thought 12.3.6 was a blessing in disguise. Every release since has been a regression in some substantial way…

FSD will probably never drive you to work with the current hardware. Lets review what it has no engineered fixes for Blocked or dirty side camera, Blocked or dirty rear camera Blocked or dirty B-Pillar camera. Then there is rain and snow where it has a hard time with depth perception. Then there are the emergency vehicles it can not hear but only see and see to late. These are hardware limits that can not just be waved away with software. The point is tesla could crack the brain today, and your never going to realize the benefit of being there test mule. Elon will say thanks, and say now the new car with version X hardware that solves all these lingering issues is truly FSD........ Thats the issue, they are so focused on robot taxi, that they have forgotten they have not sufficient hardware to make it happen in real world conditions. I would have loved to have seen them not waste the time on city streets and perfect the highway with true level 3 so I can watch tv while it cruises down the highway like mercadese has done
