Hey thanks for the comment. Yeah defiantly. It’s just for me, I think they should estimate assuming you might want to have music and heating during a 4 hour journey. I’d never buy a £50K car to sit in it boiling hot or freezing cold to save 10 miles on a charge 😂

Another great video Mark! I would suggest to use the energy graph for a better mileage gauge and turn off sentry mode to allow the car to sleep to avoid phantom battery drain when leaving the car parked. The mileage gauge you used is based on EPA range and that is based on driving at ~60 mph whereas the energy graph is based on you actual journey, including hills and motorway speeds...

Not looked at all the comments but sentry mode uses quite a bit of battery as you found in the car park. We just had a week away in Scarborough! 150 miles each way topped up in leeds on the way and used a free Tesco charger while there. The chart suggested we'd arrive back with 26 miles but because it was a slow journey we got home with 46 miles in a SR +. Thanks for the video!

Yes, I highly recommend switching from Miles to Percentage. Here in the US, I believe the number of miles is (as you state) a rough estimate, based on the estimate made by the EPA, the federal government environmental agency that gives their estimates on vehicle range and fuel/energy consumption. The estimates can be useful for comparison, but no one, EV or ICE drivers, really expects to hit those estimates. Percentage, I have found, is much more spot on, again as you stated. It’s all I use. Another way to monitor energy consumption is to click on Energy on the bottom menu. There are two tabs: Consumption, which gives you actual , real time feedback on how much energy you’re using, and a much better estimate as to how far you’ll get on your remaining charge. The other tab is Trip. This is for when you have used Navigate to plan your route for a trip. It plots out how much energy you should lose (and regain) over the trip, how much energy you should arrive at your destination with, and compares what you’re actually using during your trip to that estimate. Very useful! Great video and congratulations to all on the new family member! Handsome youngster!

Hey Ernest, thanks for the comment. Yes I always use mine in percentage as it seems much better. I do think Tesla could improve the estimation a little bit. @simoncoles24633 жыл бұрын
The reason it said 20mins to charge at Hopwood is because that would give you enough range to complete the next leg of your trip with about 10% left in the battery on arrival. If you need more then charge longer, otherwise you’re just spending time for no reason at the supercharger. BTW, I’ve been driving Teslas for 5 years and find miles much more helpful than percentage, so it’s really just a preference.

Hi Mark...nice video. Remember, absolutely everything you do in a Tesla uses battery power...including Sentry Mode. If you leave it on overnight you will lose miles. In your case though, on this trip, the disparity in expected vs forecast mileage is mostly just down to battery preconditioning. This uses a huge amount of power. As soon as you put a Supercharger in as a destination the battery preconditions by default. This does of course speed up the charging time slightly but definitely eats up the miles. If you turn off preconditioning t will take slightly longer to charge (depending on how cold it is) but you'll preserve the predicted range. Also, on the overnight situation, you will sometimes get variation in miles left just because of the battery temperature. Put it to bed with a warm battery and when you wake it up and the battery is much cooler you'll get less range reported. If you go on a cold, short trip one evening and the next day late afternoon (say) it is much warmer you'll sometimes gain range!

Hey Gary thank you. Yes I never really have sentry mode on (Unless I’m public charging like on the first charge I did, other than that, I have that turned off for the entire trip. @garymendham3 жыл бұрын
@@MBrown I've experimented with turning the preconditioning off and it definitely makes a difference to the mileage. Although I haven't tried it in the depths on winter, not preconditioning only seems to add a few minutes to charging times. I suspect if the battery is really cold then it would. We'll find out in January!
@garymendham3 жыл бұрын
@@MBrown Hi Mark, just a quick update. Stayed in Bolton and then Chatsworth last week and so left Sentry mode on overnight and it used at least 17 miles of battery on each occasion...more than I anticipated. As with you I don't normally use it because I don't need a video of every cat that walks past the car! I also tried the pre-conditioning theory too and it is definitely the thing causing mileage discrepancies. Speaking to others, whilst at normal UK summer temperatures the preconditioning uses up miles but doesn't affect charging times that much, that is not the case in winter. If the temperatures are near zero then Supercharging times can actually double without preconditioning. With preconditioning turned on the amount of battery used just warming itself up to an ideal temperature for charging is absolutely huge!

The clock means all the chargers are full. It actually says ‘short wait’ on it. You’d happily make it to one of the superchargers higher up. The charger north of Oxford would have been a good charging point for your journey. And the Heathrow T5 chargers aren’t inside the M25, they are just outside at a hotel. No need to get caught up in traffic to the airport to charge. :) It tends to be pronounced “havn’t” btw. 👍 On a V1/2 supercharger you want to not share a number. (Chargers are numbered 1A, 1B, 2A,2B etc). Sharing means you are splitting the amps available. The ‘time to continue journey’ is how long you need to charge to carry on, not how long until the battery reaches the level you requested. The capacity loss in the garage might have been due to having sentry mode turned on. It takes energy.

In all honesty I’m not sure what people’s problems are with the millage difference. With ICE cars the claimed MPG is always out as it’s based on the best case scenario driving at 60mph (56 officially). So like you say, if your driving at 60 in the Tesla you would get closer to the claimed millage. Driving at normal 70 mph with air com etc it will use more electricity (or fuel for ICE) and the real millage would be less than the claimed millage. From all the reviews I see on you tube etc people appear to judge EV’s differently to ICE which I think is harsh and wrong. On a different note, we are not in a place to buy an EV yet but love your videos. I’ve used your 600 mile and 900 mile videos to show others how usable EV’s are! Thanks for your realistic content. Look forward to the day we can get an EV, hopefully a model 3 SR+ in a year or so.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for the comment. Well I’ve done this trip many many times and the Mercedes C250CDI and FType were always very accurate (within 5-10 miles) for an average style journey anyway. Remember this is also in summer… in the winter this range drops by around 30-40%. So it doesn’t bother me too much, I just wish Tesla could update the software to accurately predict the mileage. (as it’s always consistently out the same amounts.)

My eTron is accurate in mileage estimation, it adjusts to your driving style and driving normally, as you did, I can usually improve on the range by about 10% - 12%. It would been helpful to show the w/mi for each leg to better understand if you were using more energy when you "lost" more miles from predicted. There are so many factors that impact how many miles you get (or percentage used) - weather, wind, speed, climate, heat outside, etc. My previous car (a Prius) used to have a predicted number of miles left in the tank and it would be interesting to have an ICE car with mileage prediction drive at the same time, at the same speed, with the same stops to see what the difference in miles from predicted to actual would be and compare it to the Tesla.

A rating that is probably about 12 percent better than you... But percentage is exactly that and the energy consumption graph and trip forecast is based on your actual driving trend making it very accurate. I am finding that trip graph spot on in forecasting what percentage will be left on arrival.
@colinswindell3 жыл бұрын
The comment above from James Saull is spot on. I don't yet own a Tesla but have been following a lot of KZbin owners and information channels. If you compare to an ICE car then when did you ever get the fuel consumption that the manufacturer published from their official test figures? You would rarely, maybe never, achieve it. As James said, the range that is showing to you in the car is based on the power usage achieved under test conditions and apportioned according to the percentage of charge currently in the battery. The trip graph, however DOES take into account your driving style and the traffic/weather etc that you are encountering so at any time when you look at it you will get a better indication of how far you are likely to be able to drive (how much percentage will be left in the battery - i.e. fuel in the petrol tank). This needs to be explained to viewers as simply to say that the car does not seem to achieve the mileage originally shown gives a negative view when it can easily be shown why this is. Referring to the graph then becomes the informative and positive way of showing a more realistic range that will be achieved.

Some really interesting thoughts in this video. Regarding Smart Motorways, I think they're foolish and dangerous, especially in the case of an accident, how are emergency services meant to navigate through the inevitable jam? Regarding the predicted range, I honestly don't think 13-16 miles out in each leg is that bad, especially not on warm days with aircon on and on fast motorway driving. I don't own a Tesla, but we are hiring one next month in Portsmouth for a weekend, and your series of videos have been immensely helpful, so thank you.

I don’t actually find the range predictors any less reliable than on fossil fuel cars. Particularly the fuel consumption estimate is just as prone to under reporting on petrol or diesel car as it is on an EV, which isn’t all that surprising since it’s based on the same WLTP test cycle (and was even worse under the old NEDC fuel consumption estimates). The difference to me is that because it’s more prominently reported and emphasised, I pay more attention to it - or at least did in the first year or so. After the first year, it became the new normal and I pay no more attention to it than I used to obsess about whether I’d get the estimated range on a tank of fuel on our old petrol car.
@MBrown3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kardy thanks for the comment, well it wasn't too bad in this video (still not great,) but winter I've seen it lose 40% of the predicted range which is pretty bad. It doesn't bother me, as I mention in the video, but I guess in Winter, when people say my Tesla gives me a range of 250 miles for £10, if it only can do 125 miles when its cold, it actually costs you £20 to do 250 miles if you see what I mean
@kardy123 жыл бұрын
@@MBrown Well, the electricity consumption increases during winter for much the same reason as fuel consumption goes up in fossil fuel cars - more rolling resistance from rain, sleet and snow, more aerodynamic resistance from denser, colder air, and energy diverted to heating the cabin, demisting windows etc. Using aircon in winter alone can reduce fuel efficiency in fossil fuel cars by 10% or more. So this isn’t a new problem with EVs, it simply becomes more obvious given most EV manufacturers display range rather than the equivalent of a fuel gauge. Both fossil fuel and electric cars need to stop more often to refill or recharge during the winter. And the same things that you can do to reduce winter fuel consumption largely apply to reducing energy consumption in EVs too - avoiding cold starts by pre-heating the battery and the cabin (akin to using block heaters for the engine) before you unplug, avoiding shorter trips when you use more energy to heat the car only loose it soon after you stop, and so on. If petrol and diesel cars have an advantage in the winter in this regard, it comes from the fact that some of the heat that is normally wasted through the radiator can be redirected to help heat the cabin during longer drives. For an EV, some of the heat that comes from discharging or rapid charging the battery and from accelerating and breaking with the electric motors can also be redirected in this way, but there is a lot less of it.
@MBrown3 жыл бұрын
@@kardy12 ICE cars do lose in the winter, but defiantly not to the same degree as an EV. It's literally about 20-40% loss in my car, when it;'s very cold. That has never happened to me in petrol or Diesel. I'm not slamming Tesla (I love mine as you can see.) But I do think its something that new Tesla owners need to be aware of.
@kardy123 жыл бұрын
@@MBrown Yes, EVs do see a somewhat larger increase in energy consumption because of what I noted in the last para - there’s less waste heat to recycle for heating the cabin. In a petrol or diesel engine, on average only around a fifth or so of the energy in the fuel is used to move the car while the rest is expelled as waste heat through the radiator and exhaust. The former is used in the winter to heat the cabin, so there is less of an additional increase in fuel consumption. I agree it’s something to be aware of for EV drivers, though 20-40% sounds quite a lot - we lose 20-30% on our Model S in the UK and my relatives seem to loose around 30%-40% or so in Nordic winters with a 2018 Model 3, and Model 3’s built after the Model Y was released have a heat pump that should be more efficient in heating the cabin. Not disputing the experience, though - there can be a fair bit of variation depending on local circumstances (using a garage or covered car park would tend to mean the car isn’t as cold starting in the morning while sitting on a drive it’s colder if the battery charge finishes a few hours before the drive for example). I like your videos btw, good to see some tips for driving holidays as well :)

@MBrown3 жыл бұрын
Hey Adrian, I’m in two minds…, it’s good for the EV moment, but at the same time as a Tesla owner it will annoy me when supercharger stations have a huge wait time. (Even now they are becoming full, and I’ve waited twice) so it won’t be great . Hopefully it will lead to better and more stations
@ethelred26483 жыл бұрын
Probably won’t happen. Most other EV brands have their charge port in the wrong place :)
@TranceElbow3 жыл бұрын
I would assume that a lot of the in-car range calculations are based on certain variables, which are beyond the control of the vehicle. Ambient temperature, weather conditions, wind speed & directions, gradients, traffic volumes, how heavy your right foot feels, etc, etc. Therefore, the software is just guessing based on the information available. It could be said that an ICE car will have the same issues, and fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate at times and often logarithmic in their measurements. Therefore, I wouldn't worry overly and with Tesla Superchargers widely available and reliable in the UK, I wouldn't worry overly. As for normal EV charging infrastructure, that's a whole other story.
