I just had to repair a tire with that type of kit and it worked well. As a woman, it was a bit difficult and I have a few ideas if you're having a difficult time strength-wise with this. First is to either keep warm or warm up the plug strips. It makes it easier to thread them into the eye of the needle and to plug the hole. I used a hair dryer briefly to heat the strips, but I was at home. On the side of the road in the winter, maybe just keep the strips in the glove box in a zip loc to stay warm or hold one in front of a heater vent for a bit. Second, once the strip is heated, push very hard and twist at the same time to insert. That was definitely the hardest part--even a hammer didn't help before the plug strip was heated. One more tip is to have everything ready to plug the hole (needle threaded, buttered up with glue, reaming tool ready, etc) and then pull the item out that caused the hole. If you hurry, you can plug the hole before you lose too much air and therefore have less filling time with the compressor.

The suggestion is to not let the tire go completely flat. Use the pressure inside to push back against the plug and sealant to make a better seal. Leave the teaming tool in the tire and already have the plug tool ready to go to limit your air loss. Pull the reamer out and immediately push the plug in.

I recommend the plug kit from tire slime that has the drill bit attachment. Makes the job a cakewalk. Have to bring a drill with you everywhere you go but that's well worth the hassle.

I bought a patch kit for 6 bucks. Came with rubber and plug tool. I have the tesla compressor to refill. I’ve had to use this at least 3 times. Once in a parking garage in Boston at 1 am. I carry that kit in my frunk all the time. I’ve had the worst luck with my 19 ‘ Continentals in my model 3. Just got replacement tires at 50k miles. Went with Goodyears. Same weight on tires. All the tires I patched never failed on the old tires. Thanks for the video

Glad I watched this…it helped me see hopefully a good kit …but the kit is missing what I will add to my stuff…a bottom filled with a solution of water and dish soap to find what punctured a tire.

I bit the bullet and bought the portable spare with jack. Sometimes it's not obvious where the leak is coming from and trying to fix a flat on the interstate without removing the tire with18-wheelers going by you at 70 mph can be unnerving.

for future reference to anyone if you don't have access to a lift, its much easier in my opinion to remove the wheel and do the plug with the wheel off that way you have much better access and can do it more comfortably.

It really is, however the Tesla is quite low and the need for jackpads means you need a low profile jack which makes it difficult to have one handy in the car. I barely got by with a scissor jack which wasn't the safest option IMO.

Been there, done this. Got another 10K miles out of that tire, though it leaked enough to need a couple lbs. of air per about 10 days. Of course the Tesla let me know. (By the way the local tire shop said it was too close to the edge & wouldn’t fix it. Don’t listen to that B.S.They want to sell new tires which leaves you with a half worn tire when the other tires are done).

I had the exact same issue in the exact same tire, and now even the rim is slightly deformed from impact. Suspect there’s some air leakage because of this but seems to be holding air for a week and then slowly deflates Have to get this fixed.

Also be a member of AAA and get free roadside assistance and these kits will void the warranty on the tire too if you do patch and then take it to a shop they will scrap the tire because you just made it unfixable. Also if the hole is 6 mm or larger you can’t fix it it and needs to be scrapped

If you do this, just be sure to get everything ready (all your tools out, the plug threaded into the tool, etc) before removing the nail/screw. This will prevent more air than necessary from leaking out. And once you're home, mix up some soapy water to pour over the plug to make sure there are no leaks.

Good video, however, you could have left the bolt in the tire. Inflated with compressor to get you to America’s tire where they will repair it for no charge. Assume other tire shops do the same. 99% of time objects remain causing a slow leak… it’s when the object punctures and doesn’t remain in tire is when this would be handy.

Great points, steves1233! And yes, I do see this as a plan B option in case the object disloges the tire.

My experience in over 40 years of driving has been one puncture about every 30,000 miles. However - there's always a however - they tended to be miles from anywhere when it was raining. So far I've always had a spare and I much preferred that. Now I guess at my age I'd have to call for service. Personally I'd carry a jack and the necessary Tesla pug. I'd have a repair kit - I might be really desperate - along with the necessary wheel wrench and nut cover remover.

If you see a nail or screw or whatever sticking into your tire DO NOT remove it unless you are prepared to repair it for removing it will cause tire to deflate. Drive to a shop or your shop where repair can be made. !

There is easier better ways, use the screws that have a rubber seal with it…you just screw hun easy no need to use lots of force and they hold the same, they do a test with all those types of repair things. Also you don’t need to buy a full new tire but you do need to go get it patched by your local tire place, don’t go to a dealer just go to your mom and pop shop they do it for super cheap usually like $20

I took my Rav4's wheel off then doing the same thing. It is easier to push the rimmer and the plug in with the wheel off. Tesla doesn't not come with jack , and Tesla needs special pads on the jack, so it won't damage the battery. The pad looks like a hockey puck.

Why do they sell new 2023 Honda Hybrid Accords with no spare tire? To save WEIGHT but that means you need to be towed if you have a flat. At night and over most of the weekend no Honda dealer or tire store is open. Huge towing bill, overnight hotel and meals all because there is no spare. BTW there’s also no Jack. What BS. The sealer kit they provide with the car will not fix most flats. What a rip off.

Problem: My 2019 KIA Forte I bought new did not come with a spare tire. Solution: $315.00USD KIA OEM spare tire kit. Comes complete with wrench and jack. My KIA came with no spare tire but had a can of sealant, a 12VDC compressor. By the way the sealant expires May 2024 which is 5 years after the car was made. Good luck fixing a tire on the side of the road. At night. No light. With a large puncture or hole in the sidewall than can’t be fixed. Don’t be a dumb ass. Get a spare tire kit from the manufacturer and, if they don’t have one, get a serviceable tire from the junk yard, a tire wrench, and jack and hope you’ll never need to use it. I know, I know, just make it fit and take less luggage. Hope you never need to use it. How’s you wife 👩 going to react 😠 when you get a flat tire at night with you, the wife, and the kid in the car? Thinking about that should be enough to scare you into a spare.
